3 Dedicated to continuity of care The Baylor Scoliosis Center is a special resource for physicians and patients one that is committed to innovative treatments for spinal deformity, within the framework of a patient-centered and physicianfriendly atmosphere. Patients of all ages are treated at the Center, from adolescents to adults, and families whose children are treated at the Center will have the same physicians care for them once they reach adulthood. Our medical directors The medical director of the Baylor Scoliosis Center is Richard Hostin, M.D., an orthopaedic spine surgeon. In his role as medical director of the Center, Dr. Hostin provides oversight for the treatment of spinal diseases including pediatric and adult spinal deformity, degenerative conditions of the spine, as well as spinal trauma, tumors and infections at the Center. He specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of spinal disorders and deformities, including reconstructive spine surgery for children, adolescents, and adults. Dr. Hostin plans to expand the Center s research efforts with the objective of helping the Center become a training facility for medical graduate fellows. He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, the Western Orthopedic Association, Scoliosis Research Society, and the North American Spine Society. The Baylor Scoliosis Center is actively involved in ongoing research focused on improving the understanding of scoliosis, its origin and treatment. The Baylor Research Institute Clinical Trials Office North is located on site and works in conjunction with the Center on developing new technology and treatment options for the disease. O Brien, M.D., medical director of research at the Baylor Scoliosis Center, is a fellowship-trained and boardcertified orthopaedic surgeon. In his role as medical director of research, Dr. O Brien oversees all scoliosis and complex spine deformity research efforts and studies, including efforts with other scoliosis and deformity institutions. Dr. O Brien has a strong interest in spinal deformity research. His research accomplishments include 14 published book chapters and numerous journal articles. He has also presented his research papers at more than 100 professional meetings. 5
