2 Universidad Autónoma de Madrid Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM) has approximately 30,000 students and is a leading university in Spain and amongst the best 200 universities in the world. It is a public university founded in 1968 and is organized into eight schools: Philosophy and Arts, Psychology, Law, Sciences, Business and Economics, Education, Engineering and Medicine. In 2009 it was declared International Excellence Campus, together with the Spanish Research Council (CSIC). It is located in the north of Madrid, mostly around the Cantoblanco Campus. Facilities include, among others: several libraries, canteens, halls of residence, a sports center and language services, all within a campus which is green and compact, caters for disabled students, and strives to be environmentally sustainable. UAM has a strong international vocation, with around 2,000 international students every year from all over the world. Easy access to the city centre in 20 minutes by commuter train makes the university an ideal place to experience life in one of Europe s most vibrant cities.

3 International Summer School 2016 Courses Universidad Autónoma de Madrid 5 Study Abroad in Madrid (SAM) The Study Abroad in Madrid (SAM) is a program designed for international students who wish to improve their knowledge of the Spanish language, and culture and study special topics related to Spanish society. The program offers short as well as regular semester-long interdisciplinary courses taught in either Spanish or English, including tailor-made courses. The teaching staff is composed mainly by UAM Faculty. Students receive diplomas or transcripts with official European credits (ECTS). International Summer School at UAM As part of its Study Abroad program the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid offers a range of short duration courses during the summer. The courses cover a wide variety of disciplines with a focus on Spain. Most of the classes take place entirely at our Cantoblanco campus in Madrid and are combined with visits to relevant institutions. Some courses offer a combination of classes and activities in Madrid and other regions of Spain. The International Summer School is directed primarily at international students but UAM students and other interested professionals are also most welcome.

4 Universidad Autónoma de Madrid 7 1. Spanish Language and Culture June 6th July 1st 6 ECTS This course is a wonderful linguistic and cultural immersion opportunity for students of Spanish. Ideally, students would come with an A2 or B1 level to Madrid (students are grouped together according to their proficiency level in Spanish). Students will have 20 hours of language and culture instruction per week, complemented by cultural visits guided by professors to the Prado Museum, the historic center of Madrid and its Royal Palace, a day-trip to Toledo, a typical tapas tour, and much more. Application Window March 1 - May 15 Registration Deadline May 20 Classes June 6th July 1 International students who are currently studying or professionals who have already completed their studies. Prospective students must have either a A2 or B1 level of Spanish. Tuition fees: 580 Room and board, as well as transportation, not included. There will be an additional fee for some of the extra-curricular activities.

Economics and Business June 6th July 15th 6 ECTS / 12 ECTS The goal of UAM s Summer School of Economics and Business (SSEB) is to offer high-quality courses taught in English by professors of the Faculty of Economics and Business Studies, and to bring together students from all over the world in a truly international environment. The academic excellence of the SSEB courses is complemented by social and cultural events, as well as field trips, which are not offered during the regular Fall and Spring semesters. Students can register in either one or two courses chosen from the following: Economics Track: Environmental Economics and Policy Analysis / Quantitative Methods for Socioeconomic Data Analysis (6 ECTS each) Business Track: Global Marketing / International Finance (6 ECTS each) Requirements In general, a B2 level of English. Please note, the SSEB is specially designed for students from Economics and Business. However, some courses may also be appropriate for students from the Social Sciences and Law or interdisciplinary fields such as Environmental Sciences, International Relations, etc. Bachelor s degree graduates may also apply.

6 Universidad Autónoma de Madrid Spanish Law, Politics and Economy June 13th June 24th 3 ECTS This two-week course, taught in English, aims to provide students with an introduction to current topics of the Spanish legal, political and economic reality. Lectures are combined with interactive discussions and audio-visual materials as well as visits, guided by experts, to some of the most emblematic judicial, political and financial institutions in Madrid. The teaching staff is made up primarily of UAM professors. Some guest professors from other universities and experts from different institutions also participate in the course. Application Window January 10 June 1 Registration Deadline June 10 Classes June 13 June 24 International & Spanish students from any field of study as well as professionals. Proficiency level of English B2 required. Tuition fees: discount for members of ELSA - The tuition fee includes a summer pass for the campus swimming pool, a welcome breakfast and a farewell dinner. - Partial scholarships are available. - Room and board, as well as transportation, not included.

7 International Summer School 2016 Courses Universidad Autónoma de Madrid European and Comparative Law June 14th June 23rd 3 ECTS The Summer School European and Comparative Law is a course taught in English that provides introductory knowledge of the European legal and political reality, with a special focus on key issues of current relevance. Theoretical explanations, class discussions, debates, films and documentaries, are combined with visits to the most emblematic judicial, political and financial institutions located in Madrid guided by experts. The teaching staff is made up primarily of UAM professors. Some guest professors from other universities and experts from different institutions also participate in the course. Application Window March 1 June 1 Registration Deadline June 10 Classes June 13 June 24 This course is tailor-made for students from The Stricks School of Law (Israel). Other students can also apply and will be admitted on a firstcome, first-served basis as long as there are spaces available. Proficiency level of English B2 is required. Tuition fees: The tuition fee includes a summer pass for the swimming pool, a welcome breakfast and a farewell dinner. - Partial scholarships are available. - Room and board, as well as transportation, not included.

El Camino de Santiago: Heritage, History and Culture June 20th July 8th 6 ECTS June 23rd July 5th 5 ECTS This course is aimed at recent graduates of Spanish Studies, Translation Studies, Modern Languages & Literatures as well as at teachers of Spanish as a foreign language at all levels willing to get acquainted with innovative tools and efficient techniques for the second language classroom. Contents include methodologies, practical aspects of how to teach vocabulary and pronunciation, communicative strategies in the classroom, technology in the classroom, socio-cultural and intercultural competencies in the foreign language classroom, mistake analysis and techniques of correction, etc. Lectures are given by experts in the field and are combined with dynamic classroom discussions. Application Window April 15 June 10 Registration Deadline June 17 The objective of this short-term course is to provide students with a holistic experience, not just from an academic perspective. The Way of St. James, or El Camino, is a physical and emotional challenge as well as an exceptional opportunity to learn about the history and culture of Spain. Selected lectures given by experts in fields like Medieval History, Art History, Medieval Literature or Geography, will be combined with language classes, cultural visits (to Madrid, and to many other monuments on the way), tapas and wine tastings in typical bars and wineries. This complete program allows participants to acquire knowledge while at the same time enjoy the hospitality of the people, take in the considerable artistic heritage, the changing landscape and a wealth of delicious gastronomy that makes the so-called French Way an amazing and authentic journey through time transporting you to the very roots of Europe. Application Window February 27 May 15 Classes June 20 July 8 Recent graduates of Spanish Studies, Translation Studies, Modern Languages & Literatures as well as at teachers of Spanish as a foreign language at all levels. Non-native speakers of Spanish should have a Spanish level of B2 / High Intermediate. Tuition fees: The tuition includes class material, a summer pass for the swimming pool and a welcome breakfast. - Room and board, as well as transportation, not included. Registration Deadline June 1 Classes June 23 July 5 International students & Spanish students from any field of study. - Proficiency level of Spanish of B1 or higher. - Good health and a good physical condition is required (you will be walking!). 10 International Summer School 2016 Courses Universidad Autónoma de Madrid Urban and Rural Spain: An Immersion Experience June 27th July 9th 5 ECTS This course is aimed at advanced speakers of Spanish and teachers of Spanish as a second language who wish to enhance their language skills whilst being immersed in the Spanish urban and rural culture. The course consists of one week in Madrid aimed at refreshing language skills and a second week in the beautiful valley of Valdivielso (Burgos) during which students will interact with the locals and participate in their daily activities. Conferences, readings, historical visits, cultural experiences and lively excursions assure a very rich cultural immersion in both urban and rural Spain. Activities include guided visits to historical Madrid, the Museo del Prado, tapastasting, shopping in a traditional market, a local feast in Valdivielso, a walk with the shepherds, cooking with locals, participating in the local radio, a guided visit to the archaeological site of Atapuerca, and much more. Advanced Students of Spanish, Teachers of Spanish, Professionals interested in Spanish Language and Culture. All applicants must have a Spanish language proficiency level of B2. Tuition fees: Fees include classes and cultural activities, transportation to and from Valdivielso, transportation in the area of Valdivielso, accident insurance, entrance to museums, guided visits, course materials and meals that are part of the activities (please, inform us of any dietary restrictions). - Room and board, not included. This course is organized with the collaboration of the Junta Vecinal de Quintana de Valdivielso and Rutas Inéditas por la Geografía Española.
