What is this course about? 1.1 Course description This course introduces you to foundational aspects of writing practice and its scholarship. With a particular focus on reading and writing the short story, elementary aspects of creative writing are discussed and put into practice. Assessment requires you to compose and edit creative works according to industry standards, as well as compose critical responses to seminal published works. While you will learn formal aspects of creative expression in written narrative, you will also learn how to enrich your creative practice through critical reflection. 1.2 Course content Creative Writing motivation and processes Creative ability in the construction of style Creative ability in the effective use of structure Creative ability in the construction of character and context Creative ability in the contribution of new knowledge Industry standard editing practices for Creative Writing Creative Writing further study options and associated careers 2. English language basics are not taught in this course except as elements of narrative style.

This task provides the basis for evaluating your current strengths and the areas requiring further development in your creative writing knowledge and skills, as identified via hard copy feedback and discussed during individual student-tutor consultation. You will compose a creative work in the form of a short story as a work-in-progress (draft), which may or may not form the foundation of your final short story submitted for Assessment Task 3. The draft may also contain a brief outline of aspects of the creative work not yet written but planned (included in word count). The draft may also be structured as a complete/whole piece. This draft will form the basis for discussion at individual student-tutor consultations in the teaching weeks indicated in the Course Schedule. Draft creative work 1000 words. This is an individual written assessment task. Hard copy submission in tutorial. Audience is a literary readership knowledgeable of short story conventions. This task is assessed according to level of achievement in the following: - appropriate content and style for intended audience - structured as a narrative which demonstrates knowledge of fundamental narrative elements - demonstrates a developing original contribution to knowledge by responding to the prescribed texts in an innovative and resonant way Skill assessment level
4 Assessment Task 2: Critical response Goal: Product: Format: Criteria Generic skill assessed Problem solving Information literacy Page 4 This task requires you to demonstrate critical thinking in relation to narrative exemplars studied/discussed in course content. Your submission will comprise short written responses to set questions (see Blackboard) based on the prescribed short stories studied in the course. The outcome of this task should demonstrate the relationship between critical reading and creative practice. Written response to set questions 1500 words. This is an individual written assessment task. SafeAssign submission via Blackboard. Audience is scholarly. This task is assessed according to level of achievement in the following: - appropriate content and style for a scholarly audience - engages with narrative terminology in a lucid and accurate manner - avoids plot reiteration which does not contribute to the central argument in a meaningful way - establishes a clear and relevant argument and develops this argument in a cohesive and logical manner - develops an original contribution to knowledge by critically analysing text in relation to narrative practice - the argument is substantiated with textual references from the prescribed short stories and at least one scholarly reference per question Skill assessment level Assessment Task 3: Short story Goal: Product: Format: Criteria Generic skill assessed Communication Organisation Information literacy This task requires you to create and edit creative writing projects in alignment with publishing industry expectations and standards, as taught throughout the course. You will compose a narrative prose piece styled/structured as a short story. The narrative must be accompanied by a contextualising paragraph explaining how your narrative relates to at least one aspect of course content. Short Story 2500 words. This is an individual written assessment task. SafeAssign submission. Audience is a literary readership knowledgeable of short story conventions. This task will be assessed according to the level of achievement in the following (see attached criteria sheet): - construction of style - effective use of structure - construction of character and context - contribution of new knowledge - professionalism of presentation Skill assessment level Developing Developing Developing
5 Page Additional assessment requirements SafeAssign In order to minimise incidents of plagiarism and collusion, this course may require that some of its assessment tasks are submitted electronically via SafeAssign. This software allows for text comparisons to be made between your submitted assessment item and all other work that SafeAssign has access to. If required, details of how to submit via SafeAssign will be provided on the Blackboard site of the course. Eligibility for Supplementary Assessment Your eligibility for supplementary assessment in a course is dependent of the following conditions applying: a) The final mark is in the percentage range 47% to 49.4% b) The course is graded using the Standard Grading scale c) You have not failed an assessment task in the course due to academic misconduct Student/Tutor Consultations The consultation is an important industry-based element of the course and it is essential that students attend their assigned consultation time to achieve an understanding of industry practices and successfully complete the course. 5.4 Submission penalties Late submission of assessment tasks will be penalised at the following maximum rate: 5% (of the assessment task s identified value) per day for the first two days from the date identified as the due date for the assessment task. 10% (of the assessment task s identified value) for the third day 20% (of the assessment task s identified value) for the fourth day and subsequent days up to and including seven days from the date identified as the due date for the assessment task. A result of zero is awarded for an assessment task submitted after seven days from the date identified as the due date for the assessment task. Weekdays and weekends are included in the calculation of days late. To request an extension you must contact your course coordinator to negotiate an outcome. 6.
