1 Two sides to every story Year: Y6 Respectful Relationships Resources needed Reports from different newspapers of the same story (ideally) for the OPTIONAL extension activity Introduction Ask: What do we mean by a fact? What do we mean by an opinion? Do news reports contain facts or opinions? [Usually a mixture of both] What do we mean by a biased report? [A biased report is one that expresses a certain opinion or point of view and ignores or criticises the opposing view]. What do we mean by an unbiased report? [An unbiased report gives opposing points of view equal weight without expressing a clear opinion, one way or another]. Activity 1 - Two sides to every story Give out the Two sides to every story? Activity sheet. Explain that the both news reports are covering the same story. They both use the same facts but have their own bias, that is, they express a particular opinion. Working in pairs or threes, ask children to read both reports and to pick out the facts which are the same in both reports. They can do this by making a list of the facts. Alternatively, they could use a highlighter pen to highlight the facts that appear in both reports. Once they have completed this, ask the children to look at the rest of the report. What words or phrases has the writer used to express their opinion? How have they used the facts to back up their point of view? Are both reports biased but in different ways? Ask the children to look at the way the writer of the first report has portrayed drug users. Do they think that is an accurate way of describing all drug users? Why? Why not? What do we call it when someone describes a group of people as all being the same? [Stereotyping. NB: children may have covered stereotyping in other SCARF lessons and be familiar with this concept] Activity 2 - Unbiased reporting Set the children a writing task using one or both of the following options (for example, half the class could do one task and the other half do the other):

2 1. Write a report on the news story which contains only facts with no opinions. 2. Write an unbiased report based on the news story. This report will not only contain the facts but also give both points of view, equally. It should also avoid giving a stereotypical view of drug users. Plenary Ask two or three children to read out their news reports to compare the language that has been used in the factual-only report, then the unbiased report. Which was the most useful report to read and gave you the most complete picture? Why do newspapers write reports that have a particular bias? [To reflect the views of the publication. To reflect and reinforce the views of the readers if the readers share the views of the publication they are more likely to buy it]. Explain that when we read a newspaper story (or see a report on the TV) we need to think about whether the story is biased in some way or shows a stereotypical view of certain groups of people. Ask the children to discuss in pairs or threes what questions we need to ask ourselves when we read a story in the media. Following this make an agreed class list e.g. What are the facts in the story? Are the facts being presented accurate? Have any facts been left out? If so, why? Does the story give different points of view or just one particular point of view? Does the story have a stereotypical view of certain groups of people?
