1 FairKids Field Trip Program BENEATH THE SEA AN UNDERWATER ADVENTURE The wonderful world of incredible beauty lies in the sea where adventure, fun and education collide in this attraction located in the south half of Expo Hall 5. Guests will learn about the importance of not only the ocean but our valuable sea life as we artfully combine education and entertainment in a way that connects people to the sea and marine life like nowhere else. With the ocean covering over 70% of our planet, it s important for us to learn what we can do to protect it as we discover sea life and where they call home the ocean. From our educational signage and displays, to our up close and personal shows featuring sea lions, stingrays, sharks, and much more you will be sure to leave with a better understanding of marine life. Sea Lion Splash (located outside behind Expo Hall 5) Sea lions can remain under water for up to forty minutes before they must surface for air. Luckily, our sea lions like to play! Our thirty-minute show brings out the natural comedic behavior of these amazing animals. These behaviors include in water and out of water actions, balancing, catching and retrieving objects, handstands, dancing, and even the occasional singing solo. Live Shark Encounter Dun-Dun! Dun-Dun! The sound track of JAWS plays as the audience tightens in anticipation of the unveiling of the 5,000-gallon tank and huge circling sharks! A diver plunges into the tank and swims with these intriguing animals as the crowd watches in mesmerized fascination. The audience is invited to come up to the stage and stare down a shark from the safety of a separating pane of glass, of course! Guests will learn that some sharks are just misunderstood and can be quite friendly, while others are best viewed from afar. Stingrays Did you know that Ancient Greek dentists used the venom from the stingray's spine as an anesthetic?! Fear not this is no longer a method and you ll be able to get an up close and personal experience with stingrays and other wildlife in our Live Stingray Encounter. Some of the creatures on display include Horseshoe Crabs, Hermit Crabs, and Starfish.

2 Grades: primary Live Shark Encounter Before your visit: *Read several books about sharks and discuss the information with the students. *Introduce and define vocabulary: shark, fish, carnivore, predator, teeth, fins, gills, cartilage, oviparous, ocean, and sea *Brainstorm facts about sharks and make a circle map. (If the children do not state that a shark is a fish, guide them to this fact and remind them of the characteristics of a fish scales, cold blooded, oviparous, gills, fins) *Discuss these interesting facts: 1. Sharks are a type of fish. There are over 400 species that live throughout the oceans of the Earth. 2. Some sharks are tiny. The dwarf lanternshark is only about the length of a pencil. 3. Some sharks are huge. The whale shark is over 39 feet long. It is the longest fish in the ocean, but it is not dangerous. 4. Sharks teeth continuously fall out and grow back during their lifetime. Sharks can have over 20,000 teeth during their life. 3. Most sharks are carnivores. They eat fish, seals and dolphins. 5. Sharks can t stop swimming or they will sink. *Transfer the information from the circle map to the tree map (Sharks..can/have/are) *Show photographs of various sharks (great photos are available on-line, or you can show photos from one of the shark books) *Draw a simple shark on butcher paper or chart paper. Label the parts of a shark: caudal fin, dorsal fin, eye, gill, mouth, pectoral fin, snout, tooth *Sing Mark the Shark to review vocabulary and information about sharks Mark the Shark (sung to the tune of Sipping Cider.students will repeat each line) There was a shark. His name was Mark. His skin was rough. It made him tough. REPEAT TOGETHER He had a fin. It helped him swim. He swam around and up and down. REPEAT TOGETHER

3 His teeth were sharp. They helped him bite. They were serrated like little knives. REPEAT TOGETHER Now Mark could smell. And I mean well. He smelled a fish. Oh, what a dish. REPEAT TOGETHER Mark has no bones. It s cartilage. It s in your ears And your nose bridge. REPEAT TOGETHER Let s say good-bye to Mark the shark. He was our friend. This is the end. REPEAT TOGETHER During your visit: *Look at the sharks. How are they alike/different? Find these body parts: caudal fin, dorsal fin, eye, gill, mouth, pectoral fin, snout, and tooth *Watch the stingrays. Do you notice any similarities between the stingrays and the sharks? After your visit: * Discuss the real sharks that you saw at The Cove. Add information to your circle map and tree map as needed. *Use the thinking maps to write information about sharks. (Assign the number of sentences that are appropriate for your grade level.) Illustrate your sentences. *Draw your own shark and label its body parts. *Create a crayon resist watercolor painting. Draw a shark, fish, plants, etc. with a crayon. Make the drawing dark. Use watercolor paint to paint the ocean right over the coloring. The crayon will pop right through the paint. 8 Grades: primary Live Stingray Encounter Hermit Crabs Before your visit: *Read several books about hermit crabs and discuss the information with the students. *Brainstorm facts about crabs and make a circle map. *Watch a video on You tube of a hermit crab changing its shell. *Transfer the information from the circle map to the tree map (Crabs..can/have/are) *Place the following poems in a pocket chart and read many times. Hermit Crab By Meish Goldish Hermit crab, you live all alone in an empty shell in the sea. With all those fish, don t you ever wish for a little company? Hermit Crab The hermit crab, he has no home. He has no shell to call his own. He moves along the ocean floor to find the home he s looking for. The hermit crab soon finds a shell. He crawls inside. It fits him well. He moves along the ocean floor, until his home fits him no more. During your visit: *Look at the crabs. How are they alike/different? *Watch the crabs. Do you notice any similarities between the crabs and the other creatures in the exhibit?

9 After your visit: * Discuss the real hermit crabs that you saw at The Live Sting Ray Encounter. Discuss how they are different from the hermit crab in Eric Carle s book A House for Hermit Crab. *Use the thinking maps to write information about hermit crabs. (Assign the number of sentences that is appropriate for your grade level.) Illustrate your sentences. *Create your own hermit crab. 1. Cover the child s hand with red paint and press it onto a white paper to make the crab s body. 2. Hot glue wiggly eyes on the end of two red pipe cleaners. Glue the pipe cleaners to the handprint to form the eyes. 3. Watercolor a small paper plate. 4. Draw a spiral on the plate with a black marker or crayon. 5.
