1 Enhancing the Student Learning Experience by Upgrading the CS Core Router and Firewall Project description Computer Science Department has a dedicated local area network (CSLAN) to provide computer science specific resources. The CSLAN consists of one core router, one firewall, and fifteen access switches. It serves five computer labs, two server rooms, one classroom, one conference room, and seventy offices in LOV and MCH buildings. It provides user access to Computer Science Department computing resources, FSU network resources, and the Internet through wired and wireless connections. Over fifty servers and four hundred computers and network devices are connected to the CSLAN. The core router and firewall sit at the front of the CS network. The core router is the gateway to FSU Campus Network and rest of the world. It routes network traffic between the CSLAN and the FSU Campus Network. It also routes network traffic within the CSLAN such as network traffics between computer labs and server rooms. The firewall examines network traffic and denies unwanted access and protects CS computing resources from being exposed to outside of the world. The core router is a Cisco Catalyst 6006 purchased in The firewall is a Cisco PIX 550 firewall purchased in These components are outdated, and the router and firewall have become the bottleneck of the CSLAN, severely limiting the network speed and ability to handle high speed communications. The router and firewall have been long discontinued and out of warranty. One of fans on the router was dead and the switch now shows a red light indicating that it's not functioning properly and may overheat without one of the fans operational. Network services are critical to the teaching and learning in computer science. It is essential that students have access to current technology to maximize learning and achieve success in computer science. Gigabit network became norm several years ago and 10 Gigabit network is looming. CSLAN is still operating under the 10/100Megabit network and the department lacks the resources to keep its network up to date given its extremely limited resources. We want to buy a $57000 router. Now, how is this router different from one I can buy for $50 at the store? 1. extreme speed - it must be able to handle an extreme quantity of network traffic, up to 675 TB/s! 2. high quality parts and fine manufacturing - unlike home routers, this router is bombarded with traffic constantly and should never stop functioning, even temporarily, or require a reset 3. many ports - it needs to route between many different computers, many more than you have on a home network 1

2 4. faster at processing firewall rules - so we can block spammers and certain types of network attacks before they get inside our network, without noticeably delaying other traffic 5. fine-grained and efficient network protection features - so that one professor can run intensive network experiments without affecting a computer graphics researcher downloading terabytes of images for analysis or the people reading websites or checking their in the computer lab The router we plan to purchase is a much newer version of our existing router, which has been running 24/7/365 for the past 13 years without a hitch. These are industry-standard routers and we're confident this router will be just as cost-effective as the last. This project seeks funding to upgrade the core router and firewall. Impact of this project Computer Science Department offers courses to over 1500 students. Total graduate and undergraduate class enrollment (excluding Computer Literacy) in Computer Science courses each academic year is over Most students use CS computing resources like computer labs and programming servers. Bring the CSLAN up to date will help improve all students learning experience. Project plan The Computer Science Department proposes funding from Students Technology Fee to purchase one Cisco Catalyst 6506E with one firewall module and two 48-port Gigabit Ethernet modules. The 6506E has two 10Gigabit ready uplinks that allow later upgrade to 10 Gigabit link speed without purchasing new equipment. Once the funds become available, we will start to purchase the network router. It takes around four weeks to receive the hardware. We will then configure and test the new router and firewall configurations and put in service during off hours. The estimated time to finish the project will be around 60 days. Relationship of this project to other university activities Ongoing support The project costs $57,971 total. Router installation and technical support will be provided by the Computer Science Department. There will be no recurring costs or technical support costs for this project. 2

3 Description of the project team The project team consists of the Systems Group led by Randolph Langley and Yu Wang. Both have Master's Degrees in Computer Science and years of experience administering large complex computer systems. Yu Wang also holds a Cisco certificate.
