2 This is a guest house accommodations. You will be in one part of a duplex which has three bedrooms, one main sitting room, one western bathroom with basin, shower and toilet (no running HOT water). Room and board includes food, room, electricity, linens, (plan to bring your own towels) water, and cable or land line internet is available at the hospital. To use the internet, plan to bring your own laptop or a device that allows the connection of an Ethernet cord as there is no wireless internet. Internet connection is very slow and the connection goes in and out. Plan to have your laundry done with the hospital laundry. This site is shared with the University of Iowa which may also have medical student s rotating. Hospital Demographics: The hospital is a 50 bed rural hospital, three story building in mountainous environment. There is electricity most of the time. There are 4 wards, with in and outpatient departments which include: Radiology, laboratory, mother and infant department, HIV/AIDS program. There is also a kitchen in the building. There are four full- time doctors with total employees. Part of your 4- week rotation may include spending a week at the government hospital in the town of Same. Also possible, will be time spent at clinics in the villages. Application Process: At present, this rotation DOES NOT require an application. Documents needed for travel: A current passport is needed for any international rotation. A visitor s visa is required if the student is staying for 3 months or less. Visas may be obtained at the airport in Kilimanjaro for $100. Money: Shillings are the currency in TZ. It is best if you bring new $100 bills or $50 bills for exchange. The date on the bills should be no earlier than 2006 THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT AS THEY WILL ABSOLUTELY NOT ACCEPT BILLS OLDER THAN DO NOT bring travelers checks. There is an ATM at the airport if needed. Otherwise, you can exchange money in Moshi or Same. There are also ATM s in Same and/or Moshi. Make sure to exchange your shillings back to dollars before you leave Tanzania, as no one outside the country will. You will be expected to pay for the transportation fee from the airport to Same directly to the diocese upon your arrival. You will be able to pay with U.S. dollars if needed. For housing, the program fee will be paid to the organizers at some point. Airfare and Transportation: You will want to fly into Kilimanjaro Intl Airport (JRO). Arrangements will be made to pick you up there and take you to either Moshi or Same for an overnight stay. A hired Diocesan Driver with your name on a placard will pick you up from the airport and drive you to Same. An overnight stay in Same is required and you should anticipate spending around 35,000 schillings for a double bed in a hotel which also includes a meal. You will be transported to Gonja Lutheran Hospital the following morning. Transportation service fees to use the Diocese driver, are approximately $625 (plus $50 per additional student) This fee is a rough estimate for the TOTal cost of transportation based on the actual miles taken. This fee does include the return transportation from Gonja Lutheran Hospital to Kili. Intl. Airport.

3 Land travel will be in 4- wheel drive vehicles and some bus travel. It is highly recommended that you avoid taking Dala- Dala s as they are quite dangerous. Other Information: The rotation will be a variety of Intestinal problems, bronchial issues, malaria, diabetes, hypertension, HIV/AIDS, TB, neonatal care just to name a few. It will not be any one specific rotation. Dress code is formal uniform or professional wear. Scrubs are ok. Language: Kiswahili is the main language. At Gonja Hospital, a lot of the local dialect is spoken (Kipare). English is the 3 rd language spoken. All of the doctors and nurses do know some English but it is advisable that you try to learn at least a little Swahili before you go. Food: The food terms in Swahili is provided at the end of this guide. Mama Joyce is absolutely wonderful and asks everyday what you would like to eat for all three meals. If you want to eat fresh fruits and vegetables, soak them in vinegar and salt overnight and then they are safe to eat. Medical Equipment: Plan to take your stethoscope, eye protection and BP cuff if available. Any other supplies (gloves, masks, etc.) would be helpful but not required. Keep in mind that the hospital supplies size M gloves and size 7 steril gloves. If you require another size, it is suggested that you bring your own with you. You will be the main resuscitator for newborns and it s suggested to bring a basic book on obstetrics. Communication: Internet is pretty much available, but speed is slow. Your cellphone probably won t work there, but phones are available to borrow if you pay for the call. Local people will tell you how to do this. You can purchase a cell phone for about 39,000 schillings and a SIM card for 1,000 shillings. Then you pay for minute vouchers. If you would like to be contacted by the hospital for any special OB deliveries, it is suggested that you have a local telephone number so the hospital staff can reach you after hours. Prescription meds: Prescription meds should be brought to TZ in their original containers with the Rx noted. This shouldn t be a problem getting through immigration or customs. Miscellaneous: You may want to bring a portable solar shower (very lightweight and cheap - $40) if you want hot water. Also handy to have a headlamp for any power outages.
