2 Central Arkansas Library E- Library Apple Devices Page 2 1. Apple Devices A. Audio Books from the E- Library and Apple Devices There are a wide variety of Apple devices. Depending on which type of device you have will make a difference on how you access materials from the E- Library and which audio files you can use. B. Formats: Audio Books: an Audio Book is a recorded reading of a book by a narrator or a cast of actors. Audio Books have been around for years as books on tape or books on CD. Audio Books are designed to listen to on your computer, a portable device (an MP3 player/ipod/tablet/ipad), or even your smart phone. MP3 Audio Books: these Audio Books are accessible on most devices. All Apple devices can access MP3 Audio Books. Unfortunately, many publishers do not choose to sell their Audio Books on the MP3 format so there are less MP3 audio books than the other format. WMA Audio Books: stands for Windows Media Audio and is the standard audio format publishers prefer to use. However, WMA is not compatible with some devices. If your home computer is an Apple Macintosh, you cannot access WMA audio books. If your home computer is a PC with Microsoft Windows there is a way to transfer WMA Audio Books to your Apple device. It s a rather involved process but we include the steps to do this in this hand out. 2. Preparing to use the E- Library for Audio Books A. Adobe ID and Password: Before you can access materials from the E- Library, you will need to have an Adobe ID and Password. The Adobe ID and Password are the copyright protection for materials. STEP ONE: Go to the Adobe Accounts Webpage: STEP TWO: Click the link that says My Adobe ID STEP THREE: Click the link that says Don t Have An ID STEP FOUR: Fill out the form: include an e- mail address, password, first name, last name. Uncheck the box that says, Stay informed via e- mail about Adobe products if you don t want to get ads from Adobe. STEP FIVE: Write down your Adobe ID and Password somewhere safe so you can have access to it when you need it in the future. STEP SIX: Click the yellow Create button.

Download Overdrive Media Console App: If your Apple device has a touch screen and can access the Apple App store then you will want to use this method to access audio books. Before you can use the E- Library, you need to download the Overdrive Media Console App from the Apple App store. STEP ONE: From the Apple App Store type Overdrive Media Console in the search box. STEP TWO: Touch the Free button. STEP THREE: Enter your Apple ID & Password to confirm that you want the app. The icon for the app looks like the image on the left. C. First Time Using Overdrive Media Console App: STEP ONE: Touch the icon for your Overdrive App STEP TWO: Touch the Get Books button, this is the first screen is where your books will eventually appear. There is a short welcome message available to download if you would like to listen to it. STEP THREE: To start the process of getting a book from the library touch Get Books in the top right corner. STEP FOUR: Touch Add a Website STEP FIVE: In the box below where it says Find a Library type in your zip code; this will bring up libraries in your area. STEP SIX: Touch the link that says Central Arkansas Library System Downloadable Library Main Library. STEP SEVEN: A screen appears that shows the name of the library, touch the Star to save your library selection. STEP EIGHT: Now touch the name of the library next to the star, this will take you to the Digital Library. D. Downloading Overdrive Media Console for Your Computer If your Apple Device has the click wheel interface or you do not have access to the Apple App store you will need to download audio books to your personal computer first then transfer your audio book to your i- Pod through special software and i- Tunes. In order to listen to the audio books on your computer you will need a separate software program Overdrive Media Console for PC or Mac. Apple Macintosh Computers cannot use the WMA audio book files, however, you can listen to the MP3 audio books on an Apple Macintosh Computer.

4 Central Arkansas Library E- Library Apple Devices Page 4 STEP ONE: Click the Help Button at the top of the screen on the E- Library screen. STEP TWO: Click the Software link STEP THREE: Click the Overdrive Media Console for Audio books link STEP FOUR: On the Overdrive Page click Mac or Windows to get the correct version of the program. STEP FIVE: Click the Download from Windows button, Windows 8 users click the Green Windows Store button. WINDOW 7 & 8 USERS: After downloading Overdrive Media Console, you will need to do one thing so that your computer will accept the Windows Media Audio (WMA) files. Go to the following web address: vsite Click on the Upgrade button After a few seconds, you should receive a confirmation message that the upgrade was successful. You are done with this part STEP SIX: You should have a message appear asking if you want to open, save or run the program, click run. Whenever you want to read your E- Books from the library, you will double click on the Overdrive Media Console Icon to open the program. The icon looks like the design on the left. If you do not have an icon on your desktop, you can access the program under the Start Button, All Programs with Microsoft Windows XP, Vista & 7. An icon for Overdrive Media Console should appear on your Tile Screen if you are using Windows 8.

Logging into the E- Library On your touch screen Apple device: STEP ONE: Touch the Overdrive Icon App STEP TWO: Touch Get Books at the top of the Overdrive Screen STEP THREE: If you need to type in your library card and pin number On your click wheel Apple device: STEP ONE: Go to the Central Arkansas Library Systems website: STEP TWO: On the left side of the library s home page click the link that says E- Books & Audio book Catalog. STEP THREE: Click the Account button towards the top of the screen. STEP FOUR: Type your library card number and your pin number into the appropriate boxes. STEP FIVE: Click the Sign In button. B. My Account: After you log in the first screen that appears is your account screen. Your account screen shows: Ø Your Bookshelf: this shows books you currently have checked out Ø Holds: items other patrons currently have checked out that you are waiting for Ø Lists: items you have marked that you might want to read in the future Ø Settings: this is where you can set your lending period to either 7 days or 14 days In the bottom right corner is an overview that shows the number of items you have checked out and how many checkouts you still have on your account. Patrons may have up to ten items checked out at one time.

6 Central Arkansas Library E- Library Apple Devices Page 6 C. Finding Books: There are three ways to find books to check out: The Home Page has an online bookstore layout. The Menu Option divides the material into easy to access categories. The Search Box is used to type in a specific item you are looking for. Ø Menu Option: STEP ONE: Click the Menu icon in the top right corner of the screen. STEP TWO: A menu will appear dividing the ebook collection into categories to choose from including: Fiction, Nonfiction, Children s & Young Adult, and Featured collections. STEP THREE: Click on one of the categories STEP FOUR: If you simply want to go back the Home Page to start your search click the words Central Arkansas Library System on the top left side of the screen. Ø Home Page Option: The home page is set up like an online bookstore. This is where you can see what s new, what s popular, and if you scroll to the bottom of the screen you can see what was just returned. In the top right corner of each category on the home page is a link that says View more You can click this to see more new items, more popular items, or more items that have just been returned. Ø Search Option: In the top right corner of the screen is a Search box. When using the Search box we suggest clicking the Advanced Search link right below the box in order to have the most options with your search.

7 Central Arkansas Library E- Library Apple Devices Page 7 Ø Advanced Search: Allows you to search by Title, Author, as well as subject, formats, and even by the publisher or any rewards the item as won. You can also limit to just items that are available right now in the collection. Ø Results Screen: After you perform a search, the catalog gives you a wide variety of ways to present and organize the results. Sort by: a drop down menu that allows you to organize results by: Title Author Release Date Added to Site Popularity 4. Selecting Items from the E- Library A. Borrowing an Item: In the top right corner of the book icons is a small book for e- books and a small pair of headphones for audio books. If the image is dark the book is available for check out, if it s greyed out then the item is currently checked out and can be placed on hold. STEP ONE: Click on a specific title, this will take you to a separate screen that gives you more information about that item: The author, publisher, detailed description, the formats the title is available in and most important it tells you if the item is available or if it s currently checked out.

8 Central Arkansas Library E- Library Apple Devices Page 8 STEP TWO: If you decide, you want to borrow the item below the blue Borrow button you will see the number of days you can borrow an item. You should see either, 7 days or 14 days. If you want to change this you can click the (Change) link to change how many days you want to keep borrowed items. STEP THREE: After you decide how many days simply click the big blue Borrow button. You have just checked out your title. Ø Bookshelf Your bookshelf screen is a web page on your account page that shows you what items you have checked out from the library at this time. This screen shows the expiration date for your items. The screen shows you the ways you can access your titles so you can listen/read them. Ø Second Thoughts If you check an item out and then change your mind, as long as you have not downloaded it to a device you can now return the title directly from the library s website. Click the Return Title button and it s as if it never happened.

Holds and Wish List: Ø Holds Digital items are just like physical books; the library must purchase each copy that is available for check out. If all the titles are checked out, you will see the option to Place a Hold. This puts you on a waiting list for the item. Make sure we have your accurate e- mail address; you will receive an e- mail when the item is available for you to check out. You will have three days/72 hours from the time stamp on the e- mail to check the item out before it goes to the next potential person on the list. Ø Wish List If you are not sure, you want to read a book or at least not right now, you can choose to add it to your Wish List. Your Wish List is simply a list of items that you want to remember so if you want it in the future you can get to it easier. At the bottom of the icon for each book in the E- Library is a small ribbon. If you click this ribbon you are adding the book to your wish list. 4. Downloading Your Audio Books A. Downloading Audio Books through Overdrive Media App: On your touch screen Apple device: STEP ONE: After you checkout your audio book, press Download from the Bookshelf. Make sure you have the correct file format for your device (Mp3). STEP TWO: Your audio book will download in parts and it will take longer to download than an E- Pub book since the files are large. STEP THREE: After your audio book is downloaded, on your Overdrive Bookshelf you can touch the icon for the book to start playing the book.

You can also bookmark your place by touching the button in the top right, that way your audio books should start back where you left off when you need to stop listening to your book. B. Downloading Audio Books through Overdrive Media Program On Your Computer: On your click wheel Apple device: STEP ONE: On the E- Library s Web Page, Click the Account icon at the top of the screen STEP TWO: Click the Download Option next to one of the audio books that you checked out using the steps in part 3. Selecting Item from the E- Library. STEP THREE: Check the box next to the file format you need for your computer. If you are using a PC with Windows, you can use the MP3 file format or WMA. MP3 s are more compatible with portable devices. If you are using a Macintosh computer you must choose the MP3 file format. STEP FOUR: Click the link that says Confirm & Download STEP FIVE: A box appears asking if you want to Open, Save or Cancel choose Open STEP SIX: A box pops up that simply shows where your files will go on your computer, simply click OK. STEP SEVEN: The next box shows all the parts of your audio book. The files are very large and can take a very long time to download; you might check the box by only one part to download at this time and then down load the other parts later. Each part has about 4-5 chapters in it to listen to. STEP EIGHT: You should now see your book appear in the Overdrive Media Console program. Transfer Audio Book to I- Pod: i- Tunes Software itunes: When you connect your Apple device to your PC, everything that is transferred to your devicealways goes through itunes. You will need a copy of itunes on your computer and have it registered with your Apple ID and Password. STEP ONE: Make sure your Apple device is connected to your PC though a USB port and that your computer recognizes your device. STEP TWO: In itunes with your Apple device connected to your computer through a USB port, go under the Device screen, under Options check the box that says Manually Manage Music and Videos. This must be done before attempting to transfer your audio book. STEP THREE: Click on the icon/picture of the audio book that you want to transfer to your Apple device and click the Transfer button at the top of the player screen. STEP FOUR: This launches the Overdrive Media Player Transfer Wizard Click Next. STEP FIVE: Click Next again. (Overdrive will tell you to adjust itunes AAC encoder import setting to Spoken Podcast) It may take some time for the file to transfer. STEP SIX: On the left side of your itunes screen is the name of your name of your device. Click the small arrow on the left side of your device s name. This will reveal the Music icon. Click on this Music icon. You should see all the parts of your book in order on the right side of the screen. However, if some parts are missing, click on the Books icon and see if some parts went there.

12 Central Arkansas Library E- Library Apple Devices Page 12 Ø Create A Playlist With Your Audio Book: By creating a Playlist it will put all the parts of your book together in a neat order and make it easier to play it after you disconnect your device from itunes. STEP ONE: Click on Books Icon under your Name STEP TWO: Click File at the top of your screen scroll dow, click on New Playlist, and name your playlist the name of your book. STEP THREE: Click on the parts of your book, drag and drop them into the playlist in the proper order. STEP FOUR: Now double check that it is correct by clicking on the icon for your playlist. You should see all the parts listed in order. STEP FIVE: Click on the arrow pointing up on the right side of the icon for you portable device (the one with your name). This ejects the device from itunes. 5. Playing Your Audio Book A. On Touch Screen Device: When playing your audio book you can skip from one part to another. You can also bookmark your place by touching the button in the top right corner. That way your audio books should start back where you left off when you need to stop listening to your book. B. On Scroll Wheel Apple Device: STEP ONE: On your device scroll to and click on Artist. STEP TWO: Mp3 Audio Books will be listed under Artist by Author. STEP THREE: Check under the Audio Book section

13 Central Arkansas Library E- Library Apple Devices Page WMA Audio Books on Your i- Phone, i- Pad, or i- Pod Touch A. Cannot Access WMA Audio Books with Mac: Windows Media Audio books are not compatible with a Apple Macintosh computer. If you own an i- Phone, i- Pad or i- Pod Touch and you connect it to your Macintosh computer to download music, movies, or any files you cannot access WMA files on your device since it is now formatted for Macintosh computers. If your device is formatted for an Apple Computer, do not try to connect your device to a Windows PC; if you do, you will lose your data off your phone. B. You Can Access WMA Audio Books with a Windows PC: If your computer is a Windows PC and you use it to download music, or other files to your i- Phone, i- Pad, or i- Pod Touch then your device is formatted for PC s and it can access the WMA files. However, in order to do so you will need to go through a lengthy process downloading the audio book to your computer, using Overdrive on your PC, i- Tunes on your PC and then transferring the audio book to your device through a USB connection. C. Downloading i- Tunes to Your Windows PC: i- Tunes: When you connect your Apple device to your PC, everything that is transferred to your device always goes through i- Tunes. You will need a copy of i- Tunes on your computer and have it registered with your Apple ID and Password. Newer Apple devices no longer have to use i- Tunes on a PC to upgrade software or transfer files. If you purchased your Apple device in the past couple of years, you may not be familiar with connecting your device to your computer and using i- Tunes. If you are not familiar with synchronizing your Apple device to your PC with i- Tunes you can go to the website listed to find out about downloading i- Tunes and syncing your devices. This process is not extremely difficult but takes up to much space to cover for these instructions.

Download WMA Audio Book to PC: STEP ONE: Go to the E- Library s Web Page on your PC through your web browser, Click the Account icon at the top of the screen NOTE: When you go to the E- Library on the Overdrive App on your device you cannot see WMA Audio Books, since the App itself is not compatible with the WMA files they are only visible on the site when you are on your P.C. STEP TWO: Click the Download Option next to one of the audio books that you checked out using the steps in part 3. Selecting Item from the E- Library. STEP THREE: Click the link that says Confirm & Download if you are asked to. STEP FOUR: A box appears asking if you want to Open, Save or Cancel choose Open STEP FIVE: A box pops up that simply shows where your files will go on your computer, simply click OK. STEP SIX: The next box shows all the parts of your audio book. The files are very large and can take a very long time to download; you might check the box by only one part to download at this time and then down load the other parts later. Each part has about 4-5 chapters in it to listen to. STEP SEVEN: You should now see your book appear in the Overdrive Media Console program. STEP EIGHT: Next, you are going to open i- Tunes but leave the Overdrive Media Console open, you will need it again soon.

Transferring WMA Audio Book to Device through i- Tunes: STEP ONE: Make sure your Apple device is connected to your computer through a USB port. STEP TWO: Double click on the i- Tunes icon to open the program if it does not pop up automatically after you plug in your device. STEP THREE: In i- Tunes under the Device screen, under Options check the box that says Manually Manage Music and Videos, this must be done before attempting to transfer your audio book. STEP FOUR: Go back to the Overdrive Media Console Program, click on the icon/picture of the audio book that you want to transfer to your Apple device and click the Transfer button at the top of the player screen. This launches the Overdrive Media Player Transfer Wizard Click Next. STEP FIVE: Click Next again. (Overdrive will tell you to adjust itunes AAC encoder import setting to Spoken Podcast) click OK. It may take some time for the file to transfer. The files are having to be converted from a WMA file to a format your Apple device can play. STEP SIX: In i- Tunes, there will be an icon on the right side of your i- Tunes screen that has your name on it or the name of your device. Click the small arrow on the left side the name. This will reveal the Music icon. Click on this Music icon. You should see all the parts of your book in order on the right side of the screen. However, if some parts are missing, click on the Books icon and see if some parts went there.

Playing Your WMA Audio Book STEP ONE: Touch the Music Icon App on your device. STEP TWO: Under the Music App touch the STEP STEP THREE: Playlist icon at the bottom of the screen. STEP FOUR: You Audio Book should appear on the screen STEP FIVE: Touch the name of your Audio Book. You will see all your parts touch Part one to start playing you audio book. STEP SIX: After you finally get all the steps down it will be easier from now on and you will enjoy a wide variety of great audio books.
