5 I. The Existence of Satan The Bible clearly teaches that Satan exists. Satan is mentioned in seven books of the Old Testament and in 19 books of the New Testament. Satan is mentioned in every one of the gospels. (Matthew 4:10; Mark 3:26; Luke 13:16; John 12:31) He is mentioned by Jesus and every writer of the New Testament. II. The Origin of Satan Ezekiel 28:11-15 is the main passage that speaks of the origin of Satan: Moreover the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, 12 Son of man, take up a lamentation upon the king of Tyrus, and say unto him, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Thou sealest up the sum, full of wisdom, and perfect in beauty.13 Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created. 14 Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire.15 Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee.

6 From this passage we learn four things: 1.) At his creation, Satan was full of wisdom and beauty. 2.) Satan is a created being. 3.) Satan was created a cherub which is the highest order of angelic beings. 4.) Satan was perfect when he was created. III. The Fall of Satan A.) Satan was the first sinner. (1 John 3:8) B.) Satan s sin was pride. (1 Timothy 3:6) C.) The consequences of Satan s sin: 1.) Satan was cast out of the mountain of God. (Ezekiel 28:16) This meant he was no longer the guardian of God s throne, and he was no longer the high priest in heaven who led in worship. 2.) Satan was no longer in control of the stones of fire, (Ezekiel 28:16) which is a description of the original earth which was covered by these precious stones when it was created. The original creation of this earth was a mineral garden. D.) The fourth passage that deals with the fall of Satan is Isaiah 14:12-14:

7 How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! 13 For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north:14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High. In verse 12 the name translated Lucifer actually is day-star, son of the morning. Verses give the reason for his fall: his five I will statements. 1.) With the first I will Satan desired to usurp God s throne and sit on it himself in place of the Messiah. 2.) With the second I will Satan desired to depose Michael from his position of archangel so he would be the sole authority over each angel. 3.) With his third I will Satan expressed his desire to become the ruler over all the earth. (See Psalm 48:2; Isaiah 2:2; 4:5-6) 4.) With his fourth I will Satan desired God s Shechinah Glory for himself. Whenever the word cloud is used symbolically, it is always a symbol of the Shechinah Glory of God. (Exod. 16:10; 40:34-38; 1 Kings 8:10-11; Matt. 26:64)

8 5.) With his fifth I will Satan expressed his desire to become the sole possessor of everything that God created in Genesis 1:1. He wished to be like God in authority, power, and control. This desire to be like God was the satanic motive. It was this same desire by Eve that led to man s sin in the Garden of Eden. The major sin of the future Antichrist will be that same sin to be like God: so that he will sit in the temple of God, setting himself forth as God. (2 Thessalonians 2:4) IV. The Nature of Satan There are seven things concerning the nature of Satan: A.) Satan is a creature. (Ezekiel 28:15; Colossians 1:16) He is not a creator; but he is a created being. This means Satan has not existed for all eternity, but he had an actual beginning. B.) Satan is a cherub. (Ezekiel 28:14, 16) By his very nature Satan is of the highest order of created angelic beings. C.) Satan is of the first rank of angels. He is the anointed cherub which had authority over all other cherubs. (Ezekiel 28:14) Because of his authority Michael, the archangel, had to respect him when he was disputing over the body of Moses. (Jude 8-9) This shows that Satan is of the first rank. He is the leader of all of the fallen angels. (Matthew 12:24; Revelation 12:4, 7)

9 D.) Satan is a spirit being. (Isaiah 14:12; 2 Corinthians 11:14) E.) Satan is a confirmed sinner. (1 John 3:8) This is seen in his ambitious pride (Ezekiel 28:17) his lies, (John 8:44) his craftiness, (2 Corinthians 2:11; 11:3-4; Ephesians 6:11) and by his deceptiveness. (2 Corinthians 11:14; 2 Thessalonians 2:9-10) F.) Satan can perform miracles. (2 Thessalonians 2:9; Revelation 13:11-15) G.) Satan is a limited being. He is not omniscient, omnipresent, nor omnipotent. Through his network of demons he may appear to be everywhere, but he is not. His long experience in observing human responses may make him to appear as being omniscient, but he is not. His power to do some miracles may make him appear to be omnipotent, but he is not. He does not have these attributes. Believers can resist him. (Ephesians 6:10-18; James 4:7; 1 Peter 5:8-9) V. The Work of Satan A.) In the World ( kosmos, ) which is a vast order or system that Satan has promoted, which conforms to his ideals, aims, and methods, and includes government, conflict, armaments, jealousies, education, culture, religions of morality, and pride. 1.) The world is under the control of Satan. (John 12:31; 14:30; 16:11) 2.) The world is wholly evil. Sin entered the world. (Romans 5:12) The world does not know God (1 Corinthians 1:21) or the Messiah (1 Cor. 2:8). This world is at enmity with God. (James 4:4) This world has the spirit of antichrist. (1 John 2:16)

10 3.) Satan works in the world through three temptations: the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life. (1 John 2:16) 4.) The world lusts for three things: wealth, (Mark 4:19) security (1 Corinthians 7:29-31) apart from God, and thirdly, material goods. (James 2:5) 5.) The world is impotent as far as spiritual things are concerned. (John 17:25; Ephesians 2:12; 1 John 3:1; 4:5-6) 6.) God loves the world. (John 3:16; 1 John 4:9) 7.) The Messianic Kingdom will not be of this world. (John 18:36) 8.) Believers are not of this world either. They will be hated by the world. (John 15:18-19) They will have tribulation in the world (John 16:33) because they are not of this world. (John 17:14, 16) We are to be unspotted by the world. (James 1:27) We will be hated by the world. (1 John 3:13) We can overcome the world by faith. (1 John 5:4) 9.) The world is temporary. It is destined to come to an end. (1 Cor. 7:31) It is under condemnation (1 Corinthians 11:32) and one day it will be burned up. (2 Peter 3:10) The world will pass away. (1 John 2:17)

11 B.) Satan s Work in the Old Testament 1.) Satan was the first sinner. 2.) It was Satan that caused the fall of man. (Genesis 3:1-8) In John 8:44 Satan is called a murderer since it was him that caused physical death to become a part of human experience. 3.) Another work of Satan in the Old Testament was that of accuser. (Job 1:6-12) 4.) Satan also caused affliction, both physically and on possessions. (Job 2:7-8) 5.) Satan was also a disputer. He did this over the body of Moses. (Jude 9) 6.) Satan was also a motivator of evil. (1 Chronicles 21:1) 7.) Satan was an accuser of Israel. (Zechariah 3:1-2) 8.) Satan was present at the judgment of an unbeliever. (Psalm 109:6) C.) Satan s Work in Relationship to God 1.) Satan opposes God s person. In Genesis 3:1-5, he attacked God s veracity and God s motives to Eve. According to 1 John 3:10-12, he opposes God s righteousness.

12 2.) Satan opposes God s program by means of counterfeiting. Satan knew he could not be the Most High God, so he simply declared his desire to be like the Most High God. In order to do this he instituted his own counterfeit program, which has five facets: a.) A counterfeit religion. (2 Corinthians 11:13-15; Revelation 2:9, 13) b.) Counterfeit Messiah. He does this by preaching another Jesus. (2 Corinthians 11:4) And Satan will do this when he produces his antichrist. (1 John 2:18, 22; 4:3) c.) Counterfeit followers. (Matthew 13:38-39) They are like tares which look like the wheat, and it is hard to tell them apart. They may publicly affirm their faith in Christ, but not be true believers. d.) Counterfeit theology. Satan has a system of false doctrines. (1 Timothy 4:1-3) e.) Satan has the ability to counterfeit miracles. (Matthew 7:22-23; 2 Thessalonians 2:8-11) These are real miracles, but counterfeit in the sense that one claims to do them in the name of God, but God does not really do them.

13 D.) Satan s Work in the Life of Christ 1.) The conflict between Jesus and Satan was prophesied. (Genesis 3:15) 2.) Satan tried to kill Jesus as a babe in Bethlehem. (Matthew 2:1-18) 3.) Satan tempted Jesus to try to get Him to sin. (Matt. 4:1-11; Mark 1:12) 4.) Satan often used people to thwart the work of Jesus. He used Herod. (Matthew 2:16) He used Peter. (Matthew 16:23) He used the multitude in John 8:44 & ) Satan motivated Peter to deny Jesus. (Luke 22:31) 6.) Satan was responsible for the betrayal of Jesus by Judas. (John 13:2) Later Satan himself entered into him (John 13:27) and he was called the son of perdition. (John 17:12) E.) Satan s Work in Relationship to the Gentile Nations 1.) Satan causes the fall of nations. (Isaiah 14:12, 16) 2.) Satan deceives the nations. (Revelation 12:9; 20:3) 3.) Satan influences the nations. (Daniel 10:13, 20; Matthew 4:8-9; Ephesians 6:12)

14 4.) Satan authorizes the antichrist. (Revelation 13:2, 4) 5.) Satan will gather the armies for the final conflict. (Revelation 16:12-16) 6.) Satan will lead the deceived in one final revolt. (Revelation 20:7-10) F.) Satan s Work in Relationship to Israel Satan is the adversary of Israel. (1 Chronicles 21:1; Zechariah 3:1-2) G.) Satan s Work in Relationship to Unbelievers 1.) Satan tries to prevent belief in the gospel. He does this in two ways: First, he tries to snatch the sown seed from the hearer. (Matthew 13:19; Mark 4:15) Secondly, he tries to prevent acceptance by blinding the mind of the unbeliever so the unbeliever does not understand the issues. (2 Corinthians 4:3-4) 2.) Satan promotes attraction to falsehood. He does this in two ways: First, he indoctrinates people into false religious systems and teaches them false doctrines that satisfy them. (1 Timothy 4:1-3; 1 John 4:1-4) Secondly, he promotes a false lifestyle as described in Ephesians 2:1-3 and 1 John 2:15-17)

15 3.) Satan has the power over death of unbelievers. (Hebrews 2:14; Revelation 1:18) 4.) Satan causes suffering and oppression. (Luke 13:16; Acts 10:38) 5.) Satan sows unbelievers among believers. (Matthew 13:25-39) 6.) Satan uses unbelievers to pervert the gospel. (Acts 13:8-10) 7.) Satan energizes his own false ministers. (2 Corinthians 11:13-15) 8.) Satan uses unbelievers to oppose the gospel. (Revelation 2:9-10, 13) H.) Satan s Work in Relationship to Believers 1.) Satan sifts ( to put through difficult times ) believers. (Luke 22:31) 2.) Satan hinders believers. (1 Thessalonians 2:18) 3.) Satan gains advantage over believers who allow themselves to be deceived. (2 Corinthians 2:11) 4.) Satan beguiles some believers as he did Eve. (2 Corinthians 11:3) 5.) Satan buffets believers as he did to Paul. (2 Corinthians 12:7)

16 Church discipline 6.) Satan has the power of death over excommunicated believers. This is the only case where Satan has the power over death of a believer. (1 Corinthians 5:5) This is where a believer has undergone the four steps of church discipline mentioned in Matthew 18: The final step for an unrepentant believer is excommunication, which means he is put back into Satan s domain for the destruction of the flesh. This does not affect the person s salvation; the believer will still be saved, but he may have an untimely death. This is also called the sin unto death that John speaks about in 1 John 5:16. 7.) Satan controls some believers from within. (Acts 5:3) In Ephesians 4:27 Paul admonishes not to give a place to the devil. The Greek word for place is a military term meaning a beachhead. If a believer gives a beachhead to the devil, then it means the devil can control that believer from within. This is also verified by 2 Timothy 2:26. 8.) Satan wars against the saints. (Ephesians 6:10-18) This is why believers need the whole armor of God. 9.) Satan accuses believers before the throne of God. (Revelation 12:10) 10.) Satan plants doubts in the minds of believers. (Genesis 3:1-5)

17 11.) Satan incites persecution against believers. (Revelation 2:10) 12.) Satan infiltrates the Church. He does this in two ways: with false disciples such as the tares of Matthew 13:38-39 and with false teachers who preach another Jesus and false doctrines. (2 Corinthians 11:13-15; 2 Peter 2:1-19) 13.) Satan promotes division in the church. (2 Corinthians 2:1-11) 14.) Satan tempts believers (1 Thessalonians 3:5) in at least six areas: a.) He tempts believers to lie. (Acts 5:3) b.) Satan tempts believers to commit sexual sins. (1 Corinthians 7:5; 1 Timothy 5:11-15) Paul forbids a married couple from withholding too long from sexual intimacy, lest Satan tempt them in that area. (1 Corinthians 7:3-5) c.) Satan tempts believers to commit specific acts of sin. (1 Peter 5:8) d.) Satan tempts people to be preoccupied with the things of this world. (1 John 2:15-17)

18 e.) Satan tempts believers to develop pride in spiritual matters, and in that way the believer falls into the same sin that brought about Satan s fall. (1 Timothy 3:6) f.) Satan tempts believers to rely on human wisdom and strength rather than on divine wisdom. (1 Chronicles 21:1-8) 15.) Satan devours believers. (1 Peter 5:8) 16.) Satan deceives believers through his counterfeit schemes. He preaches another Jesus (2 Corinthians 11:3-4) and appears as an angel of light. (2 Corinthians 11:14) 17.) Satan causes some believers to lose their faith. (1 Tim. 1:19-20) But fortunately, they do not lose their salvation. 18.) Satan attempts to defeat believers through his demons. (Ephesians 6:10-12) 19.) Satan misuses Scripture (Matthew 4:5-6; Luke 4:9-11) He can quote it accurately, but he either quotes it out of context or he gives a misapplication as he tried to do with Jesus.

19 20.) Satan uses four specific procedures against believers: a.) He uses devices and special designs to entrap the believer. (2 Corinthians 2:11) b.) He uses wiles. (Ephesians 6:11) c.) He sets out snares. (1 Timothy 3:7; 2 Timothy 2:26) d.) He uses lying miracles. (2 Thessalonians 2:9) He does have the power of miracles, and he does use this for the purpose of working against the saints. I.) Satan s Work in the Future 1.) He will war against Israel. (Revelation 12:13-17) 2.) He will energize the Antichrist. (2 Thessalonians 2:9; Revelation 13:11-13) 3.) He will give rise to the False Prophet. (2 Thessalonians 2:9; Revelation 13:11) 4.) He will gather the nations for the battle of Armageddon. (Revelation 16:12-16)

20 5.) He will deceive the nations after the Millennium for one last revolt against God s authority. (Revelation 20:7-9) VI. The Seven Judgments of Satan A.) Satan s first judgment was at the time of his fall. (Ezekiel 28:16) In this judgment he lost his position as being the anointed cherub that covers (the canopy over the throne of God), and he lost his position as the guardian of God s throne. B.) Satan s second judgment came in Genesis 3:15 as a result of his temptation of Adam and Eve. (Genesis 3:15) The judgment was that the woman would produce a seed that would bruise Satan s head. That One, Jesus Christ, would also bring life, restoration, and salvation to humanity. C.) Satan s next judgment was at the cross. The cross brought salvation to mankind and judgment of defeat upon Satan. (John 12:31; 16:11; Colossians 2:14-15; Hebrews 2:14-15; 1 John 3:8) D.) Satan s first future judgment will be in the middle of the Tribulation when he will be cast out of the atmospheric heavens and confined to earth for the remainder of the Tribulation, so he will no longer have any access into Heaven. (Revelation 12:7-12)

21 E.) Satan s judgment at the end of the Tribulation will be confinement in the abyss for the duration of the Millennium. (Revelation 20:1-3) F.) Satan will be judged at the Great White Throne, where he will be judged by the Church. (Romans 16:20; 1 Corinthians 6:2-3) G.) Satan s final judgment will be the Lake of Fire where he will reside for all eternity. (Matthew 25:41; Revelation 20:10) VII. The Believer s Responsibility and Defenses A.) The believer has armor available to him, which is the Word of God. (Ephesians 6:10-18; 1 John 2:14) The more the scriptures are studied, memorized, and meditated upon, the more armed we are against attacks of Satan. B.) The believer has power to resist the devil and believers are told to do so in three places. (James 4:7; 1 Peter 5:9; Ephesians 6:10-18) Believers are never told to bind Satan nor to rebuke Satan, but are told to resist him. And we do that through Scripture. C.) The believer is to be vigilant. (1 Peter 5:8) We stay alert by recognizing how Satan works and by being ready for him.

22 D.) The believer has an Intercessor who is Jesus Christ. (John 17:15; Romans 8:4; Hebrews 7:25) E.) There are three principles which believers should keep in mind in dealing with Satan: 1.) Believers are not to speak of Satan contemptuously. (Jude 8-9) 2.) Satan is used by God to teach believers. He may also inflict physical problems to teach us lessons. Satan was allowed to inflict Job so he could learn more about the sovereign nature of God. (Job 1-2) Satan was also allowed to inflict Paul to teach him humility and to learn that God s strength could be made even greater through Paul s weakness. (2 Corinthians 12:7-16) 3.) Satan is sovereignly restricted. (Job 1:12; 2:6) Satan is not omnipotent, and even the power he does have cannot be used without God s permission. God will never allow Satan to go too far.

27 Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised in the city of our God, in the mountain of his holiness. 2 Beautiful for situation, the joy of the whole earth, is mount Zion, on the sides of the north, the city of the great King. Psalm 48:1-2 Now it will come about that In the last days The mountain of the house of the Lord Will be established as the chief of the mountains, And will be raised above the hills; And all the nations will stream to it. 28 And it came to pass, as Aaron spake unto the whole congregation of the children of Israel, that they looked toward the wilderness, and, behold, the glory of the LORD appeared in the cloud. Exodus 16:10 Then a cloud covered the tent of the congregation, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle. 35 And Moses was not able to enter into the tent of the congregation, because the cloud abode thereon, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle. 36 And when the cloud was taken up from over the tabernacle, the children of Israel went onward in all their journeys: 37 But if the cloud were not taken up, then they journeyed not till the day that it was taken up. 38 For the cloud of the LORD was upon the tabernacle by day, and fire was on it by night, in the sight of all the house of Israel, throughout all their journeys. 31 Yet in the same way these men, also by dreaming, defile the flesh, and reject authority, and revile angelic majesties. 9 But Michael the archangel, when he disputed with the devil and argued about the body of Moses, did not dare pronounce against him a railing judgment, but said, The Lord rebuke you! Jude 8-9 Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God. Romans 13:1

32 But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, This fellow doth not cast out devils, but by Beelzebub the prince of the demons. Matthew 12:24 And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth: and the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as it was born. Revelation 12:4 And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, Revelation 12:7

33 And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. 2 Corinthians 11:14

34 He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil. 1 John 3:8

35 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it. John 8:44

36 Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, 10 And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. 2 Thessalonians 2:9-10

37 And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon. 12 And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him, and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed. 13 And he doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men, 14 And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live. 15 And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed. 38 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son.
