1 DEMONOLOGY Lesson 30 Memory Text Revelation 20: 10 The Bible speaks clearly of a kingdom of darkness. Since there is such a kingdom, then there must be a king, subjects to that king, and a territory over which that king rules. This kingdom is called: a. Satan s kingdom. Matthew l2:25-26; Luke ll:14-19 b. Kingdom of darkness. Colossians 1:13-14; Revelation 16:10 c. The heavenly places. Ephesians 3:10, 6:12; Revelation 11:15 d. The power of the air. Ephesians 2:2 e. Kingdoms of this world. Luke 4:5-6; Matthew 4:8-10; Revelation 11:15 WHO IS THE KING OF THIS DARK KINGDOM? There are many different titles given to this prince of darkness. a. Satan - meaning adversary. Job 1:6-12, 2:1-7; Zechariah 3:1-7; II Corinthians 2:11 b. Devil - meaning accuser. Matthew 4:1, 13:39, 25:41; John 8:44; Revelation 12:10 c. Serpent - meaning beguiler. II Corinthians 11:3; Revelation 12:9 d. Dragon - meaning enchanting serpent. Revelation 12:3-17, 13:2, 4, 11, 20:2 e. Angel of light - meaning deceiver. Luke 10:18; II Corinthians 11:13-15 f. Lucifer - meaning morning star. Isaiah 14:12 g. Murderer - meaning the killer. John 8:44 Satan s activities correspond to his names. He lives out these evil roles. HOW DID LUCIFER BECOME THE KING OF DARKNESS? Very little information is given to us about Satan s origin, but we have some prophetic insight given by Isaiah, Ezekiel, and Jesus. a. He was lifted up in pride. Isaiah 14:12; Ezekiel 28:17; I Timothy 3:6 b. He was the first sinner. Ezekiel 28:15; I John 3:8 c. He became the first liar. John 8: WHO ARE THE SUBJECTS TO THIS KING OF DARKNESS? a. The fallen angels According to Revelation 12:4, one-third of the angels followed Satan s rebellion. This shows that the angels have a will and that Satan s influence was so great that many of them also rebelled. In Scripture, the fallen angels are called many different names. These titles show a difference in the rank and authority of these angels. I Peter 3:22; Ephesians 6:12; Daniel 10:20 Some of these angels are already in a special compartment of hell. II Peter 2:4; Jude 6 This is a possible explanation of the giants in Genesis 6:1-4 and Numbers 13:33.

2 b. Demon spirits The Bible does not state the origin of demons. However, there is much information in Scripture to be gained about them and their activities. a. They are spirit beings. Matthew 8:16; Luke 9:39, 42 and 10:20 b. They have personalities. Luke 4:33-35; Matthew 8:28-29; Mark 1:23-26 c. They are numerous. Mark 5:9 Mark 5:2-13 gives many insights into the demonic world. 1. Demons are impure. verse 2 2. Demons identify with death. verse 3 3. Demons are powerful. verse 4 4. Demons are tormentors. verse 5 5. Demons are intelligent. verse 7 6. Demons have rulers. verses 9, Demons desire a home. verse lo 8. Demons desire to destroy. verses 12, 13 WHAT IS THE ACTIVITY OF DEMONS? a. They seduce and deceive. I Timothy 4:1; II Corinthians 4:4; Matthew 13:39 b. They fight the Gospel. Matthew 13:19; I Thessalonians 2:18 c. They oppress people. Acts 10:38; Luke 13:11, 16; II Corinthians 12:7 d. They possess people. Matthew 4:24, 8:16, 9:32, and 12:22 57 The Greek word translated possessed is the word daimonizomai. It means to be exercised by a demon. This denotes both occupancy and control of the individual. It is not possible for a Christian to be possessed by a demon, as the Holy Spirit will not dwell in an unclean temple. I Corinthians 3:16 and 6:19 Oppression comes by demons attacking from outside of ourselves; whereas, possession comes from demons taking control from strongholds they have established within us. WHAT IS THE TERRITORY OF THE KINGDOM OF DARKNESS? a. Satan has a kingdom. Matthew 12:26 b. Satan is the god of this age. II Corinthians 4:4; Luke 4:5,6 c. Satan rules over demon spirits. Revelation 9:11 d. Satan wants to live in human bodies as his temples. John 13:27; Luke 22:3

3 WHAT SHOULD BE THE BELIEVER S ATTITUDE TOWARD DEMONS? a. Realize we are in the kingdom of light. Colossians 3:13; Acts 26:18 b. Realize that Jesus has given us authority over demons. Mark 16:17; James 4:7 c. Realize that the devil will try to attack you. I Peter 5:8, 9 d. Realize there is a place where Satan cannot touch us. I John 5:18; John 14:30 WHAT ARE THE BELIEVER S WEAPONS? a. The Word of God. Matthew 4:1-10; Revelation 12:11; Ephesians 6:17 b. The name of Jesus. Mark 16:17; Acts 16:18 c. The Holy Spirit within you. I John 4:4; Galatians 4:6 I Corinthians 3:16 d. The gifts of the Holy Spirit. I Corinthians 12:10 The dunamis of the Holy Spirit refers to the released authority of our Lord Jesus Christ. Philippians 2:10 Everything must bow to the authority of Jesus. 158 Five Greek Words Which Help Us Understand How the Kingdom of God Operates 1. Dunamis this word means energy, power, might, great force or ability. Dunamis is the energy which is released when dynamite explodes. 2. Exousia this word means the right to use dunamis. It comes from a root word which means it is lawful. Exousia is the right to act as the delegated authority. 3. Ischus this word means to prevail greatly. It is the ability, he force that comes from exercising both dunamis and exousia. 4. Kratos this word means a dominion or manifested power. Kratos refers to the territory over which the king has authority. 5. Arche this word means the one who has the right to rule. This refers to the one who is the rightful king.
