2 Statement of Intent We are committed to providing a caring, friendly and safe environment for all of our pupils so they can learn in a relaxed and secure atmosphere. Bullying of any kind is unacceptable at our school. If bullying does occur, all pupils should be able to tell and know that incidents will be dealt with promptly and effectively. We are a TELLING school. This means that anyone who knows that bullying is happening is expected to tell the staff. What Is Bullying? Bullying is the use of aggression with the intention of hurting another person. Bullying results in pain and distress to the victim. Bullying can be: Emotional being unfriendly, excluding, tormenting (e.g. hiding books, threatening gestures) Physical pushing, kicking, hitting, punching or any use of violence Racist racial taunts, graffiti, gestures Sexual unwanted physical contact or sexually abusive comments Homophobic because of, or focussing on the issue of sexuality Verbal name-calling, sarcasm, spreading rumours, teasing Cyber All areas of internet,such as & internet chat room misuse Mobile threats by text messaging & calls Misuse of associated technology, i.e. camera &video facilities Why is it Important to Respond to Bullying? Bullying hurts. No one deserves to be a victim of bullying. Everybody has the right to be treated with respect. Pupils who are bullying need to learn different ways of behaving. Objectives of this Policy All governors, teaching and non-teaching staff, pupils and parents should have an understanding of what bullying is. All governors and teaching and non-teaching staff should know what the school policy is on bullying, and follow it when bullying is reported. All pupils and parents should know what the school policy is on bullying, and what they should do if bullying arises. As a school we take bullying seriously. Pupils and parents should be assured that they will be supported when bullying is reported. Support parents in responding to issues of bullying Signs and Symptoms A child may indicate by signs or behaviour that he or she is being bullied. Adults should be aware of these possible signs and that they should investigate if a child: is frightened of walking to or from school
3 doesn't want to go on the school / public bus begs to be driven to school changes their usual routine is unwilling to go to school (school phobic) begins to truant becomes withdrawn anxious, or lacking in confidence starts stammering attempts or threatens suicide or runs away cries themselves to sleep at night or has nightmares feels ill in the morning begins to do poorly in school work comes home with clothes torn or books damaged has possessions which are damaged or " go missing" asks for money or starts stealing money (to pay bully) has dinner or other monies continually "lost" has unexplained cuts or bruises comes home hungry (money / lunch has been stolen) becomes aggressive, disruptive or unreasonable is bullying other children or siblings stops eating is frightened to say what's wrong gives improbable excuses for any of the above is afraid to use the internet or mobile phone is nervous & jumpy when a cyber message is received These signs and behaviours could indicate other problems, but bullying should be considered a possibility and should be investigated Roles and responsibilities Students: Act in a respectful way and supportive manner to all other students reporting any suspected incidents which the victim may be afraid to report Refrain at all times from behaviour which would contribute to the bullying of other students Report all incidents of bullying to a member of staff. Adhere to and promote the principles of this policy. Staff: To be familiar with the school anti bullying policy To recognise that the responsibility for dealing with bullying incidents rests with all staff To respond to parents/guardians concerns re bullying issues raised To keep records of all incidents of bullying
4 Parents/guardians Stressing to students the importance of social behaviour Reporting any concerns that they have concerning either victims or perpetrators Actively supporting the policy on eradicating bullying Procedures 1. Report bullying incidents to staff. These will be noted for Information on ibehave 2. In cases of serious bullying, the incidents will be recorded by staff on ibehave 3. In serious cases parents should be informed and will be asked to come in to a meeting to discuss the problem 4. If necessary and appropriate, police will be consulted 5. The bullying behaviour or threats of bullying must be investigated and the bullying stopped quickly 6. An attempt will be made to help the bully (bullies) change their behaviour Outcomes 1. The bully (bullies) may be asked to genuinely apologise. Other consequences may take place including detention and isolation. 2. In serious cases, exclusion will be considered 3. If possible, the pupils will be reconciled 4. After the incident / incidents have been investigated and dealt with, each case will be monitored to ensure repeated bullying does not take place. Other strategies for the prevention and reduction of bullying Raise awareness of the nature of bullying through Citizenship, form time, assemblies and subject areas to develop students assertiveness in order that they may feel better able to deal with bullying situations. Students confident to tell someone To encourage staff to be proactive in combating bullying to serve as a good role model to students. Form tutors ready to listen to students and take the appropriate action to support the victim and sanction the perpetrator School counsellor is available to offer support to victims and bullies. Record of all bullying incidents is on ibehave. The monitoring of victims and bullies and the provision of special arrangements for any students considered to be at risk, including guidance, counselling and information on other sources of support. Students who have been bullied will be supported by: Will be offered an immediate opportunity to discuss the experience with their form tutor or Community Leader. Reassuring the student Restoring self esteem and confidence form tutor, teachers and community leaders
5 Restorative justice offered Students who have been bullies will be helped by: Discussing what happened Discovering why the student became involved Establishing the wrong doing and the need to change Informing the parents/guardians to help change the attitude of the student Be encouraged to take part in restorative justice The bully (bullies) may be asked to apologise genuinely. Procedures for monitoring, evaluation and review The school will review this policy annually and assess its implementation and effectiveness. The number of reported and recorded incidents will be kept by each community and this data will be reviewed termly.
6 A Guide for Parents If You Are Concerned That Your Child Is Being Bullied: Contact your son s form tutor in the first instance, then the Community Leader if you are still concerned. Homophobic bullying: Students that are, or perceived to be gay or lesbian can be the victim of homophobic bullying. This abuse can be either verbal or physical. CHSB will not tolerate bullying on the basis of sexual orientation. Students are taught to accept one another for their differences. Cyber bullying: Mobile Phones: All UK mobile phone operators have nuisance call centres set up and/or procedures in place to deal with such instances. They may be able to change the number of the person being bullied. Mobile operators cannot bar a particular number from contacting a phone, but some phone handsets do have this capacity. Action can be taken against the bully s phone account (e.g. blocking their account) only with police involvement. Social Networking sites (e.g. MySpace, Bebo, Piczo): It is good practice for social network providers to make reporting incidents of cyber bullying easy, and thus have clear, accessible and prominent reporting features. Many of these reporting features will be within the profiles themselves, so they are handy for the user. If social networking sites do receive reports about cyber bullying, they will investigate and can remove content that is illegal or breaks their term and condition in other ways. They can delete the accounts of those who have broken the rules.
7 The UK s national centre for protecting students, the Child Exploitation and Online protection (CEOP) Centre encourage social networking providers to adopt a one click button for students to get immediate police help. CLICKCEOP was launched back in 2006 as an online button for young people to use whenever they are in danger on line. It has already been adopted by hundreds of sites including MSN Live Messenger in the UK and AOL BEBO. By clicking on the link, students can access a range of advice and guidance from organizations such as the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF), Childline, Beatbullying and GetSafeOnline, as well as CEOP s own specialist teams. Students can also use the link to make reports to CEOP s specialist police teams. Chatrooms, individual website owners/forums, message board hosts: It is good practice for chat providers to have a clear and prominent reporting mechanism to enable the user to contact the service provider. Users that abuse the service can have their account deleted. Some services may be moderated, and the moderators will warn users posting the abusive comments or take down content that breaks their terms of use. If you suspect your child is being bullied: Calmly talk with your child about his/her experience Make a careful note of what your child tells you, who is involved; how often Bullying has occurred; where it happened and what happened Reassure your child that he/she has done the right thing to tell you about the bullying Encourage your child to talk to their Form Tutor. If they do not wish to inform the Form Tutor yourself. Talking with teachers about bullying Try and stay calm bear in mind that the teacher may have no idea that your child is being bullied or may have heard conflicting accounts of an incident Be as specific as possible about what your child says has happened give dates, places and name of other children involved Make a note of what action the school intends to take Ask if there is anything you can do to help your child or the school Stay in touch with the school; let them know if things improve as well as if problems continue. What to do if your child is bullying other students. Many children may be involved in bullying other pupils at some time or other. Often parents are not aware that their child is involved in bullying. Children sometimes bully others because: They don t know it is wrong They are copying older pupils whom they admire They haven t learnt other, better ways of mixing with their school friends Their friends encourage them to bully They are going through a difficult time and are acting out aggressive feelings
8 To stop your child from bullying others Talk with your child; explain that what he/she is doing is unacceptable and makes other children unhappy Make an appointment to see your child s Form Tutor; explain the problems, discuss how you and the school can stop him/her bullying others Regularly check with your child how things are going at school.
