Our goal today is to pick your brains as experienced trade negotiators and development practitioners on how trade and biodiversity can become partners and contribute to mobilize our biodiversity assets to our region sustainable and equitable development and its long term competiveness,
Biodiversity is Our Brand Latin America and the Caribbean has the largest resource of biodiversity assets in the world. Some of our countries are agricultural super powers. The region has the potential of becoming a superpower on biodiversity and ecosystems services these assets can become a major asset for growth, equity and competitiveness.
LAC World Richest in Biodiversity and Ecosystems Services South America has more than 40 % of Biodiversity in Earth More than ¼of its forests and single most world diverse region Meso American Reef largest coral reef in Western Hemisphere 24 % of fresh world water resources This valuable asset base gives region comparative advantage to harness for economic growth and competitiveness Brazil ( and LAC ) agribusiness super powers could become eco superpower in biodiversity, carbon and freshwater

GOALS To assess and communicate economic contribution of biodiversity and ecosystems services to development and equity; and raise policy makers awareness of importance and urgency to conserve biodiversity and ecosystems services integrating conservation and production functions. KEY PRODUCT A report w/ robust data to make a politically compelling case to policy makers to invest in biodiversity and ecosystem services and S& T infrastructure for innovation. The report builds on a sectoral approach presenting links with economic indicators such as employment, tax and foreign exchange revenues and comparing practices in Business as Usual and Sustainable Ecosystem Management.
STRUCTURE Commission for Biodiversity, Ecosystems, Finance and Development Technical Advisory Committee Regional political leaders, economists, the private sector and civil society supervise the Initiative and guide the preparation and dissemination of the report A group of regional experts in economics and finance oversee the technical quality of the report Central Technical Team A group of environmental economists prepare the report
Partnerships and Strategic Alliances STRUCTURE Stakeholder Consultations Communications Strategy Partnerships with United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and UNCTAD A Communication strateg will ensure effective dissemination of the Initiative with members of government, CSOs and the private sector in the region. Strategic alliances with leading environmental organizations, multilateral and national financial institutions such as BNDES
The UN General Assembly has designated 2010 the International Year of Biodiversity The Report is scheduled for release in fourth quarter of 2010 to contribute to global and regional key policy events: Climate Change: COP 16 Cancun end 2010 Biodiversity COP 10: Nagoya end 2010 Regional, Ibero American and EU/Latin America and Caribbean Summits

The Commission for Biodiversity, Ecosystems, Finance and Development has requested to explore new markets possibilities and financial tools for Ecosystem Services Without valuation and price signals, biodiversity will not be recognized as an asset and used as a free production unit Need to bundle Biodiversity in other emerging or more mature markets for ecosystems services ( i.e. Water, Carbon, REDD )
Synergy with UNCTAD s BioTrade Initiative UNCTAD has prepared a draft report analyzing the potential for BioTrade industries in the region Current cases illustrating a) how investment into biotrade subsectors is being implemented and b) the economic growth potential of biotrade Challenges and opportunities including establishment of enabling policy environment to significantly scale up bio trade to contribute to LAC s development and equity.
