5 Saferinternet.pl Final Report Saferinternet.pl The Saferinternet.pl project comprises comprehensive awareness-raising activities promoting safe and responsible use of the new media by children and young people. The project is coordinated by FDN and is run jointly by FDN and NASK. Most actions undertaken within the project are carried out in cooperation with the Orange Foundation. 3.1 Social campaigns The Promotion of the Safe Internet Sign-boards with children s underpants in the Coccodrillo clothing shops From 1 to 15 February 2011 the new informational campaign named The Promotion of the Safe Internet was carried out. The campaign was targeted at the parents of the youngest children with the goal to raise the awareness that the Internet is the place where serious dangers, such as paedophilia, await even for a juvenile child. It was carried out nationwide, in 150 shops with children apparel of the Cocodrillo brand. Customers were exposed to sign-boards depicting a computer hand-shaped cursor approaching real children s underpants. The idea was to catch the recipients attention and approach them with strong message about hazards such as paedophilia. Apart from the sign-boards customers were able to find informative posters and brochures in all shops participating in the campaign. The campaign was designed by the Publicis marketing agency and was awarded with golden drum in Design and Art Direction category at the Golden Drum International Advertising Festival 2010 in Portoroz. It has also gained extensive media coverage in Poland. The Orange Foundation and the Cocodrillo children clothing company were partners in this action. 6 Polish Safer Internet Centre I don t accept, connect nor enter... campaign promoting Polish Hotline Dyżurnet.pl The social campaign I don t accept, connect nor enter... was launched by NASK on 3 August 2011 in response to the growing number of illegal online content. The aim of the campaign was to promote the activity of the Polish Hotline Dyżurnet.pl and to inform users that at the website they may anonymously report illegal and harmful content found on the Internet in one of the three basic categories: child sexual abuse material, hard pornography, racism and xenophobia. The campaign was also aimed at building awareness of Internet users about harmful or illegal online content and the need of responding to such incidents. In this way, every Internet user may contribute to preventing negative consequences of such threats. The campaign was addressed to adults and included online, print and outdoor advertising created by Clos Brothers agency. The new logo of Dyżurnet.pl was also designed. Special acknowledgements were expressed to media for having recognised the importance of the problem and for their support in displaying and publishing the campaign materials. Since the beginning of the campaign the following media and institutions have been involved in the initiative: Agora Foundation (gazeta.pl), Wirtualna Polska (WP.pl), Kampaniespoleczne.pl, Modaija.org, Diebold Poland Sp. z o.o (owner of the nation-wide cash4you ATM network in Poland) Watch your face Facebook campaign Campaign posters In response to the increasing popularity of Social Networking Sites among children and youth Polish Safer Internet Centre has launched a viral campaign dedicated to the protection of online privacy. The campaign is carried out under the slogan Watch your face (the slogan uses double meaning of the word face in Polish beside the regular, obvious meaning, it is also commonly used as abbreviation from Facebook, and often as a general term for SNS). It is addressed to young Internet users between the age of 13 to 17 years. For the campaign purpose, the Nobody s Children Foundation and NASK together with the VA Advertising Agency created a superhero character Fejsmen (Faceman) who tries to help Internet users who engaged in risky behaviours online which jeopardized their privacy. Fejsmen Fejsmen s Facebook profile always fails to help, which should make young people realise that only a deliberate action and the responsibility of Internet users themselves will ensure their safety and privacy online. Fejsmen however does succeed to provide important safety tips. The campaign includes five animated videos The Adventures of Fejsmen. Each of five episodes tackles a different issues: sexting, the need for logging out, the risks associated with reckless comments posting, publishing, and sharing photos. The videos are produced in amusing and youth-friendly manner. In January 2012, official Fejsmen s Facebook profile was launched. Until March 2012 it has collected over 4,000 fans. The videos can be found on Facebook and YouTube. The action is promoted through Facebook advertisements and PR activities. The project was first presented in public at the conference accompanying the celebration of the Safer Internet Day Polish Safer Internet Centre

There were various games and contest prepared for children with attractive prizes founded by SID partners. Furthermore as in previous years all across Poland 1176 local initiatives related to children s online safety were undertaken by schools, libraries, industry partners, local media and local NGOs in February Initiatives included talks to children and parents at schools, local media campaigns, school theatres performances, school competitions, etc. The ideas were registered via website, which allowed local organizers to browse initiatives according to regions. As in the previous years valuable prizes were provided for the most innovative initiatives. 3.5 Youth Panel The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child states that children and young people should be involved in the decisions that affect their lives. In accordance with the article 12 of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child stating that Every child has the right to express his or her views and those views must be taken seriously, the commitment to child participation is reflected in various activities of Saferinternet.pl project. Consultations with children and young people allow to design effective educational tools and media campaigns, and to evaluate the actions in progress. Such consultations are held during meetings of the Youth Panel made up of 13 and 14-year-old students, as well as through contacts with users of the Sieciaki.pl portal. The Youth Panel is thought as a consultation group where young people can express their views and exchange knowledge and experiences concerning their use of online technologies. Young people are also asked to contribute to the design of awareness raising actions, tools and material, and thus contribute to defining future activities of the Polish Safer Internet Awareness Centre. The Youth Panel reviews existing materials on online safety and provides feedback as to how useful the tools are. Currently the Polish Youth Panel counts 10 participants from the 3 rd and 2 nd class of Junior High School in Konstancin Jeziorna (14-15 years olds). In period reported four Youth Panel meetings took place. The first meeting took place on 2 December 2010 and it focused on the lesson plan for On the Web educational talk show. The ideas and feedback obtained from the group helped to introduce some changes and significantly improved the scenario. The second meeting took place on 24 March 2011 and its main goal was to evaluate how the new scenario serves its purpose and discuss how the resource could be used in classroom. The third session of Youth Panel took place on 24 May 2011 and it was dedicated to online privacy issues. Young people discussed their activities on SNS, talked about their favourite ones and how they imagine their life without SNS. They were also asked about positive and negative sides of SNS. The fourth Youth Panel session took place on 9 November 2011 and it was focused on the consultations of the new Facebook campaign Fejsmen Watch your face. 3.6 European Award for Best Children s Online Content The European Award for Best Children s Online Content was a competition organized jointly by the Safer Internet Centres in 14 Member States and the European Commission s Safer Internet Programme.
