1 I Turn on the Tap: Words and music Richard Stilgoe, arranged by Song Company Background Turn on the Tap is performed by The Song Company in a style known as Kwela Swing. Kwela is a style of music that uses the penny whistle, and was popular in the apartheid-dominated South Africa in the 1950s. A form of African jazz, the signature sound of Kwela is upbeat, lively, and danceable, featuring cross rhythms and the influences of swing, jazz, blues, boogie-woogie as well as indigenous African music. World music enthusiast Julian Raphael discovered I Turn on the Tap, which was composed by Englishman Richard Stilgoe. The style is derived from the migration to the UK of people from Africa and the Caribbean. The piece utilizes only four chords. For the verse I, ii, V, I and for the chorus: I, V, I, IV. The song has a key message with regards to the importance of water: the struggle against poverty and the fate of children around the world the relationship between life expectancy and the availability of fresh water the effect on health and the significance of water as the most important source of sustenance and life.
