As a result, family s dependency on money lenders during emergencies has reduced. Women empowerment has led to promotion of gender equity. Women have more say in family decisions now. Usage of banking services and accessing government office has increased in the village. Family-based Enterprises has resulted in improvement in income levels. There is an increased awareness on computer (IT related), rights and government schemes. There is an improvement in health and hygiene conditions of the villagers. 6
7 Cleaner and greener village created. PROGRAMME IMPACT The improved economic condition has made families self-sustainable and helps them reach a better lifestyle in terms of education and other benefits. The level of awareness on education has been increased. All the children of the village are expected to pursue education, which will increase employment opportunities in future. Knowledge about early diagnosis and treatment of disease has improved Villagers are beginning to use the knowledge gained through health awareness programmes for a healthier lifestyle. There has been some attempt to bridge the digital divide between urban rural India. A better living environment (clean and green) has been created and a movement towards efficient management of natural resources. CHALLENGES It is a challenge to get the community to take ownership of the project in order to ensure long-term sustainability. The attempt is to bring in an attitude of partnership to improve the community. Sanitation: Hand in Hand India found that the village did not see individual household toilets as a primary need of the community, despite continuous efforts. Open defecation leads to diseases and the habit must be changed. SOCIAL AUDIT After completion of two years, Hand in Hand India has handed over the task of sustaining the development of Vadukapoondi panchayat to the Village Development Committee (VDC). For the first time under Hand in Hand India s guidance the VDC conducted a social audit of Hand in Hand India's Village Upliftment Programme. Approximately five members from the Panchayat conduct an audit for their village, which they do in the presence of two external members (i.e. student belong to Dept. of Social Work from reputed college). The community members complete a 7
8 prescribed evaluation form, which provides an overall picture of the efficacy and impact of the concerned project. The following information is captured through the questionnaire: Data (quantitative and qualitative) in each of the five key areas Women s Empowerment, Child Labour Elimination and Education, Health, Citizens Centres and Environment. Expectations of the village community Suggestions for the improvement of the programme. The evaluator encourages the stakeholders to narrate their own experiences and that of their friends and colleagues so as to capture the programme s impact. The stakeholders are also asked to spell out the future directions that they would like the programme to take. Two Hand in Hand India staff members assist in mobilizing the local community to do the audit and are available for any assistance. Please find below the audit findings for your village. The villagers are expected and encouraged to fill in the gaps expressed through the audit. Hand in Hand India will continue to provide handholding support to the village, especially with regard to microfinance and educational activities SOCIAL AUDIT REPORT Panchayat Name: Vadukapoondi Overall Panchayat Rating: 87 % / A (Green) Individual Pillar-wise Performance: Pillar Self Help Group & Microfinance Total Score (out of 20) 18 Highlights SHG members received skills training in order to earn more Wish list More number of vocational training to the SHG members Loan amount to be increased Periodical veterinary camps Child Labour Elimination & Education 18 The number of school going children increased Evening Tuition centre to be continued 8
