3 What are the two types of nouns? Common Noun A common noun is a noun referring to a person, place, or thing in a general sense. Proper Noun The proper noun represents the name of a specific person, place, or thing. You always write a proper noun with a Capital letter.

4 What is a Pronoun? A pronoun can replace a noun or another pronoun. You use pronouns to make your sentences less cumbersome and less repetitive. If we didn't have pronouns, we would have to repeat a lot of nouns. EXAMPLES Subjective personal pronouns are: I, you, she, he, it, we, you, they. objective personal pronouns are: me, her, him, it, us, them.

6 What is an adjective? An adjective modifies or describes a noun or a pronoun. In the following examples, the highlighted words are adjectives: The truck-shaped balloon floated over the treetops. Mrs. Morrison papered her kitchen walls with hideous wall paper. The small boat floated on the dark sea. The coal mines are dark and dank. Many stores have already begun to play irritating Christmas music.

A verb or compound verb (verb phrase) asserts something about the subject of the sentence and express actions, events, or states of being. The verb or compound verb (verb phrase) is the critical element of the predicate of a sentence. Verb phrase - will run - shall write has gone

The most common conjunctions are: and, but, or, nor, so, yet, after, although, as, because, before, how, since, while.

13 What is an Interjection? An interjection is a word added to a sentence to convey emotion. It is not grammatically related to any other part of the sentence. EXAMPLES: oh!, ouch!, hi!, Ouch! That hurts! Hi! How are you? Well, I don't know. Hey! What a good idea!" well! hey!

An article is a limiting word, not descriptive, which cannot be used alone, but always joins to a substantive word to denote a particular thing, or a group or class of things, or any individual of a group or class. Articles are either definite or indefinite. The is the definite article, since it points out a particular individual, or group, or class. An or a is the indefinite article, because it refers to any one of a group or class of things.

15 Direct Object? A word or phrase in a sentence referring to the person or thing receiving the action of a transitive verb. Example: John mailed the letter to NSCC. Frank hit the ball over the fence. Please call him as soon as possible. Mailed what?- the letter Hit what? the ball Call whom? - him

16 Subject and Predicate. Every sentence has two main parts, A complete subject and a complete predicate. The complete subject includes all the words that tell who or what the sentence is about. The complete predicate includes all the words that state the action or condition of the subject.

17 The simple subject is the main word in the complete subject. The simple subject is a noun or a word that stands of a noun. The simple predicate is the verb in the complete predicate. EXAMPLE: The sun \ rises in the east.
