1 Name: Class Period : Sentence Structure Notes/Packet This packet contains your notes and practice for a few grammar skills that we will be learning. It needs to come to class every day and it needs to be kept safe in your Language Arts binder. Term Definition Example (underline/highlight where necessary) Subject The subject is who or what the sentence is about (noun, pronoun) Simple subject One subject Evan went fishing. Compound subject Two or more Evan and Tom went fishing. Evan, Tom, and Bill went fishing. Complete subject Subject location The complete subject is who or what is doing the verb plus all of the modifiers[descriptive words] that go with it. The big, hungry, green Martian grabbed a student from the back row. Beginning of sentence: Edgar Allan Poe wrote many strange stories. Middle of sentence: One day, Edgar Allan Poe mysteriously disappeared. End of sentence: In through the window flew a large raven.

2 Subject PRACTICE Underline the subject in the following sentences. Label whether they are simple subjects (S) or compound subjects (C). 1. Mr. Bur ns sh owed off hi s da nce moves. 2. J oey, Frank, a n d Bob a ll travele d togeth er to th e soccer game. 3. In through the open door flew a giant wasp. 4. During his biology lab, Tommy danced on the table. 5. The speeding hotrod crashed into the telephone pole. Underline the complete subject. Circle the simple subject: 1. The bright, copper penny laid on the ground. 2. The fuzzy, happy puppy licked my face.

3 Term Definition Examples (underline/highlight where necessary) Predicate The predicate tells something about the subject (verb) Simple predicate one Evan ran. Compound predicate Complete predicate Two or more The predicate plus any words that are attached to that predicate. Evan ran and biked. Evan ran, swam, and biked. The large dog chased the cat. To find the predicate, ask: What is the sentence saying or asking about the subject? Predicate location Beginning: Down the hill sprinted the runner. Middle: Did the runner sprint down the hill? End: The runner sprinted down the hill.

4 Predicate Practice: Circle the predicate and underline the complete predicate. 1. Tamara adopted a new puppy. 2. The rain poured down from the sky. 3. The singer finished her last song. 4. Liam hit a homerun. 5. The new tent is easy to assemble.

5 Clause Term Definition Example (underline/highlight where necessary) Independent clause Dependent clause Phrase a complete thought that contains both a subject and a predicate and can stand on its own as a sentence. has a subject and predicate, but can t stand alone as a sentence because it is not a complete thought. A phrase does not have a subject doing the verb. We read the book. While we read the book. Smashing into a fence Connecting clauses You can connect: YES: independent clause + independent clause YES: independent clause + dependent clause

6 YES: dependent clause + independent clause... to form a sentence because you will be expressing a complete thought. You cannot connect: dependent clause + dependent clause Because you have two incomplete thoughts. How can you tell the difference between a dependent clause and a phrase? A clause has: a subject and a verb A phrase does not have: a subject actually doing the verb.

Compound sentence Complex sentence Independent clause + independent clause Dependent clause + independent clause (and vice versa) Alejandro played football, so Maria went shopping. When he handed in his homework, he forgot to give the teacher the last page. Compound-complex sentence made from two independent clauses and one or more dependent clauses Although I like to go camping, I haven't had the time to go lately, and I haven't found anyone to go with. Why is it necessary to use ALL types of sentences in your writing? In order to vary your writing and maintain a high level of style (keep it interesting!)
