1 A workshop to explore body confidence & self-esteem. Based on materials developed by Dr. Susie Orbach, Dr. Nancy Etcoff at Harvard University and beat, the UK s eating disorders charity This resource has been created within the Dove Self-Esteem Fund campaign to be used free of charge in connection with Dove Self-Esteem Workshops. 7 Over 60% of girls avoid certain activities because they feel bad about their looks. For example: 19% won t try out for a team or club 23% won t go to the beach or pool 13% won t give an opinion 15% won t go to school Source: Dove Global study,

11 how will we work? some ground-rules No-one will force you to speak. Everyone s point of view counts we d like to hear them all. Let s show respect by: Listening to others opinions. Being non-judgemental. Putting our hands up to speak. If we hear something private, let s keep it private. 10

13 what do self-esteem and body confidence mean? Answers include: Knowing & liking yourself. Being happy to be you Accepting your body as it is. Holding your head up high about the way your body is. Not being self-conscious about your body. 12

15 Self-esteem develops during childhood. The good news is that we can all learn how to strengthen it. 14

16 Activity Self-Esteem Supports Objective: to understand what builds self-esteem. By identifying the things that make us feel good, we can support ourselves when times are hard. you Instructions: think about what makes you feel good about yourself and builds your self-esteem. Be as specific as possible. Think about particular activities, places, times of day, past-times, people etc. Write them in the bricks underneath you. Add more bricks if you have more ideas. 15

17 Activity Self-Esteem Supports Did you know? Sport may give you a different and more positive experience of your body. Laughter and a little sunshine are scientifically proven to make you feel good. Why do you think this can happen? 16

18 Activity 2.1 How Would You Feel? Objective: to explore how media imagery can make us feel. 17

19 angelina jolie perfection? The Oscar -winning actress seems to have it all, with a successful career and Brad Pitt by her side. But she has said I struggle with low self-esteem all the time. I think everyone does. I have so much wrong with me, it s unbelievable. (Mar 2008) Why might she feel this way? 18

22 plastic surgery - who gains? Some people hope that plastic surgery can fix something that does not feel right inside. Unfortunately many are still unhappy after plastic surgery. The plastic surgery industry is booming around the world. In 2010, the USA spent almost $10.7 billion on cosmetic surgery and procedures like Botox.
