3 The societal changes have built a new world : comunication is the key stone of our livesnowadays This means -for the road transport and all the logistically intertwinned sectors -: Efficient Network, Highly performant vehicles, cost effctive logistic layout, technology and Intelligent Transport System offering a sustainable mobility SAFER COMPETITIVE MOBILITY Seamless, cost efficient, environmentally friendly safe movement of goods and persons.

5 UNECE could not ignore this approach and the challenge many of its operative Working parties daily face in the technological management of all the related transport issues. Hence the decision for UNECE to play a vital role to be player and team leader in dealing with ITS transport policies and strategies. The Road Map is meant to draw the attention to the legal asset dealing with technology and to be the inspirational guide to boost the mobility by leapfrogging the structural hindrances of some world areas while improving the existing network.

6 Intelligent transportation systems (ITS) make the most of wireless communications-based information and electronics technologies. When operating with infrastructures, and/or vehicles these technologies relieve congestion by optimizing the infrastructure improve safety and enhance transport system productivity I ITS could then offer a quick answer to the demand for more efficient, cleaner and safer transport, both for passengers and freights.

8 Transport growth has reached top limits, but ITS can improve the efficiency of some transport aspects like road side equipment and the creation of services, focused on travelers and road user needs to receive information and guidance, will account for a fewer fatalities on the road network. The ITS can really offer trust worthy solutions, for example : In Traveler Information Services, which provide the traveler with comprehensive real time traffic information(pre-trip trip information & on trip information). In Traffic Management Services which provide real time guidance detecting incidents and emergencies, to ensuring safe and efficient use of the road networks

9 The traffic monitoring network works through cameras, installed on VMS s gantries or toll gates which are fully remotely operated. The operators of the Traffic Control Centre continuously monitor video images and alert the emergency operators for real time interventions in case of dangerous events. Cameras have high sensitivity sensors to ensure good quality images even in poor lighting conditions, variable-focus lens, zoom enabling the framing of both carriageways Moreover a traffic detection system can be composed of coils placed on the motorway and radar sensors positioned under each Variable Message Sign; this equipment is designed to permit a real time, precise monitoring of the vehicles.

10 We know that nowadays the use and application of new intelligent systems is a vital part of the constant upgrading of vehicle performances (Advanced Driver Assistance, Advanced Protection System, Alcolock, Speed alert linked to enhancing the active and passive safety standards. On-board devices in the close next future -are planned to be able will collect traffic-related data from each vehicle, including driving speed, location, weather-related data which could bring the journey planning to safer, efficient and energy- consumptions compatible standards.

11 Safety System / Devices are nowadays widely used on board ABS ( Anti-lock Braking System) ESC ( Electronic Stability Control) EVSC ( Electronic Vehicle Stability Control) DBC ( Dynamic brake control) AEBS ( Automated Emergency Braking Systems) There are other active safety systems, some still in the testing stage -- FCWS ( Forward COllision Warning Systems; LDWS ( Lane Departure Warning Systems; Systems that detect the condition of the driver or perform the automatic correction of driving errors

12 Transport projects proposal in this moment of the 7 FP should consider International synergies Enhancement of new opportunities Global impact environment Bridging the Status of Art with the driving stepstones of Horizon 2020.

13 20 Global Actions to promote the use of ITS Harmonizing policies and setting international cooperation, through the UNECE WPs Promoting V2V, V2I comunication Road Safety challenge Contributing to capacity building, awareness raising and education, climate change and mitigation with especial attention to emerging economies.
