6 CASEE - an initiative of BOKU Vienna: Reasons for the ICA-CASEE network Enormous challenges for university development at present Bologna process Excellence in research, education and university management (increasing competition between higher education institutions!) Landscape development; urban- and rural development, Reasons for the ICA-CASEE network EU-Strategy for the Danube Region A strategy to boost the development of the Danube Region was proposed by the European Commission on 8 December 2010 (Commission Communication - EU Strategy for the Danube Region). Member States endorsed the EU Strategy for the Danube Region at the General Affairs Council on 13 April The Danube Region in this context refers to: Germany (Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria), Austria, the Slovak Republic, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Romania, Bulgaria, the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine What is the added value for other Member States? A better Danube Region will be better for the European Union as a whole. A pilot project of EU, a show case for more efficient cooperation and coordination

7 Aims of the ICA-CASEE-Network ICA-CASEE is a non profit organisation which aims to stimulate and support its member institutions in the development of a European dimension in education and research through the development of concerted actions and in engaging globally. To support the development and implementation of the EU-Strategy for the Danube Region To strengthen research, education and University development in this region To develop joint research, education and other projects (e.g. joint curricula, joint continuous educational offers, structural development, human resource development, QA, know-how-transfer (e.g. via e-plattform,...) To cross-link and to act complementary with existing networks, e.g. with the Danube Rectors` Conference Use of existing funding instruments Why ICA? (Association for European Life Science Universities) Founded in 1988 as the Interfaculty Committee Agraria, ICA, is a network of more than 60 life science universities, from the EU and neighbouring countries (European Higher Education Area). ICA s vision is to enhance the members success in the international market place, in Europe and globally, by providing a supportive environment to share experience, to cooperate in new ventures, and to benefit from the resulting synergy. ICA also liaises with other European and international networks, and with international student associations
