22 Going to the Grocery Store by: Beth Morettini, April 2, 2002 These activities can be used to identify items in the grocery store. The pictures can be taken to the grocery store to identify the real items. We talk about what aisles the groceries are located. Conversation can be centered around all the things that can be purchased in a grocery and categories. We use flyers from actual grocery stores to cut out and paste on paper. We also will act out loading a grocery cart, requesting help to locate items, checking out with cashier, and bagging groceries. We also incorporate the use of coupons and money skills for higher level students. For students with more severe disabilities they will have to chose between 2-3 pictures to place in the grocery cart. The repetitive lines are placed on big mac switches that every child gets to participate in the story. An All Turn It can be used to chose items to be put in the grocery cart. Directions: 1. Print each page in landscape form. (Card stock is a good choice for paper since it is thicker) 2. Place the smooth side of velcro (female) in the square on each page. 3. Cut out and laminate the pictures. Place a piece of the rough side of velcro (male) on the back of all pictures.. 4. On page 16 velcro (female) is placed on both sides and bottom of the
23 shopping cart. The top of the cart is left empty. 5. Cut out and laminate the cart on page 17 and place velcro (male) on the back of both sides and bottom of the grocery cart. Place on top the grocery cart on page 16. The top is open to load groceries pictures in. This board is kept to the side so the student can take the picture off the page and placed in the cart. For highere students that read they will locate the picture that is placed on a blank page and put on the velcro on each page. 6. The worksheet is used with a grocery flyer. Students cut out pictures and place on the grocery cart. As they glue the pictures on they read the sentence. 7. The overlay is used on the blackhawk device or used just for the student to point to the item they want to place in the cart. 8. We also used overlays for like it and don t like it, so the students can decide if they would buy that item. 9. Before we started the activity we talked about different grocery stores and reviewed the items. For the more severe student we matched the item to the picture symbols. 10. Make a file folder by glueing the worksheet on the bottom half of the file folder and covering with contact paper. Place a piece of velcro (female) in the middle of the grocery cart and a piece on the blank of the sentence. Use contact paper or laminate the picture symbols of the overlay and place velcro (male) on the back of each. On the top part of the file folder place strips of the velcro (female), so the picture symbols can be placed there. The game is played when the leader reads the sentence with a picture symbol filled in the blank
24 space. The student locates the item in the top part of the file folder and places it in the milddle of the cart. For higher level students the leader might describe the item and the student locates the item and places it in the cart. There many, many activities that can flow from going to the grocery store.
