1 SundayMAXleaders Sunday School Resource Produced by Jane Tibbs Children s Adviser 21 August 2016, the Thirteenth Sunday after Trinity Introduction This week we move from reflection to action, from parable to miracle with the healing of a woman in the synagogue. Game Traffic lights Readings Jeremiah 1:4-10 Psalm 71:1-6 Hebrews 12:18 to the end Luke 13:10-17 Remind the children of this game if you played it last week You will three large circles coloured red, orange (amber) and green, or three balls would do The children run around your space in the same direction. Hold up a circle. The children either Stop and sit down (red) Freeze (orange) Keep moving (green) After a couple of goes, tell the children that they can do whatever they like when a circle is held up and move around your space in any direction. The results should be chaos! Do ensure that everyone is safe. Discussion Talk about the fact that rules are important, to keep people safe and happy like in the Traffic Lights game. However we need to understand the rules properly as Jesus did. He knew that the rules did not mean that someone should not be healed. It was the synagogue leader who did not understand. Explain to the children that the Christians changed the Sabbath day from Saturday to Sunday because Jesus rose from the dead on a Sunday. Traditionally, Sunday has been a day of rest. However, doctors and nurses have always worked on Sunday. Are they like Jesus? Nowadays, not many people treat Sunday as a special or different day. Do you think that we should? You might like to read Genesis 2:1-4.

How did she feel at the end of that day? She must have been the person most pleased that Jesus had chosen to heal her. Make models of the woman using the template. Cut out and colour the parts. Then join them with split pins at the places marked. Now she can start bent over, and then straighten up. In pairs or threes, ask the children to tell the story again to each other, using the models they have made. Prayer Love, love, love You will need the models of the woman if you made them earlier. Bend the woman over ready for this prayer Lord Jesus, Thank you for healing the woman who was all bent over. Thank you for making her stand straight straighten out the model woman Just like the crowd, it makes us happy to know about the wonderful things you did then. And the wonderful things you do now. Jesus enemies were ashamed, but the people were really happy when they heard what Jesus said and saw what he had done W? 4 SundayMAXdrama The woman healed on the Sabbath Suggestions for retelling and exploring Luke for children, including a drama Jesus and the Sabbath Retell the Gospel story with two people learning the script below. (One person is seated. The other comes and sits down beside her.) A: We all missed you at the synagogue yesterday. Are you feeling better? B: Yes, a lot better today, thanks. Did I miss anything? A: Did you miss anything?! I ll say you did! Jesus of Nazareth was preaching when suddenly in came a woman. She could hardly walk. She couldn t even stand up straight. When Jesus saw her, he stopped talking and called her over. He said to her, You are free from your illness. He laid his hands on her and she stood up straight and began to praise God! B: Did anybody object? It was the Sabbath after all. A: Oh yes, one of the leaders stood up and started telling us that there are six days for work and the Sabbath is for rest. He said healing people was work that should not be done on the Sabbath. B: Did Jesus say anything? A: Yes, he looked at us and said, Even on the Sabbath everyone here will untie his ox or donkey and take it to have a drink of water. This woman has been ill for eighteen years. Surely she can be set free from that illness on the Sabbath day? B: Did the leader say anything back to Jesus? A: No. The crowd began rejoicing at all the things Jesus had done and said. What do you think? Going deeper Divide older children into four equal groups, to take on the roles of Jesus, the woman, the synagogue leader and the crowd. Give each group a copy of the story, making sure they understand that: Jesus healed on the Sabbath day and therefore challenged Jewish law; the synagogue leader criticised Jesus for healing on the Sabbath; Jesus responded by saying that all people do things to care for others on the Sabbath; the crowd rejoiced at the things Jesus was saying and doing. Ask each group to read the story through several times and consider the questions below. Jesus What did you think when you saw the woman? How did you feel when the synagogue leader complained about you healing on the Sabbath? How did you feel when the crowd started rejoicing? The woman What did you think when you saw Jesus? Were you surprised that he healed you on the Sabbath day? How did you feel about the things the synagogue leader said? The synagogue leader What did you think when you saw Jesus heal the woman? Were you surprised that he did it? How did you feel when the crowds took Jesus side? The crowd Were you surprised that Jesus healed on the Sabbath day? Did you agree with what the synagogue leader said? What really made you want to rejoice at what Jesus had done? Ask each group to share their ideas briefly with the others.
