12 1. INTRODUCTION In the frame wrk f the EFTTRA yf\ prgramme n recycling f actinides and fissin prducts, five gamma scan wires which were included in the experiment R8. Tbis have been examined by gamma scanning. The results f the measurements have been described in this reprt. ECN-l-96-47

14 . THE R8. GAMMA SCAN WIRES The functin f the gamma scan wires (GSWs) is t btain infrmatin abut the neutrn fluence distributin in the capsule during irradiatin. In the wires the nuclides 58 C, 54 Mn, 51 Cr, 59 Fe and 6 C are prduced. These nuclides are characteristic fr respectively fast and thermal neutrn reactins: - fast neutrn reactin - thermal neutrn reactin 58 Ni (n,p) 58 C 54 Fe (n,p) 54 Mn 5 Cr (n,g) 51 Cr 58 Fe (n,g) 59 Fe 59 C (n,g) 6 C The GSWs [] are made f stainless steel and have a diameter f 1 mm and a length f 665 mm. The lcatin f the GSWs in the capsule is shwn in figure 1. T be able t identify the gamma scan wires they were marked at the bttm side with ntches as shwn in the fllwing table. DESCRIPTION OF THE GAMMA SPECTROMETRY SYSTEM 3.1 Gamma Scan Facility The gamma rays f the GSWs were measured using a high purity germanium detectr placed just behind a cllimatr system, crssing the rear wall f the ht cell. A diagrammatic representatin f this device is shwn in Figure. The cllimatr has a ttal length f 1.4 m. The slit height is adjustable frm thrugh 8 mm and the width is adjustable frm thrugh 15 mm. 3. Gamma Scan Transprt Device Fr the gamma scan measurements a transprt facility with an axial transprt length f 77 mm is installed against the rear wall f the ht cell. The axial psitin f the gamma scan transprt unit is cntrlled by means f a magnetic vernier system. The smallest axial displacement amunts t.1 ±.1mm fr each psitin. The GSWs have been placed successively in a vertical glass tube munted in a plastic scket which is clamped upn the transprt device and mved in vertical directin. 3.3 Pulse Height Analyzing System The key part f the system is the Canberra SI multi channel analyzer. The multi istpe scan (MIS), the pulse height analyzing (PHA) measurement and the mtin cntrl unit are c-rdinated by a pentium persnal cmputer. The analysis f the spectrmetric data is perfrmed nline and the results are stred n disc. Further prcessing t graphical and data utput is perfrmed with the aid f a Digital VAXstatin 4/ Dead Time Crrectin Prcedure Fr each measurement a delay in the ttal measuring chain ccurs due t the dead time f the ADC. T prevent an errr in the nett area calculatins a calibratin pulse is taken int accunt (Fig. 3, peak 7). A crrectin factr f the delay time is calculated by means f the fllwing frmula. N ECN-l

In the multi istpe scans nly the nett areas are crrected. PERFORMANCE AND RESULTS OF THE MEASUREMENTS 4.1 Pulse Height Analyses T identify the active nuclides in the GSWs the energy spectrum f GSW 1 had been analyzed with PHA, using the high purity Ge detectr. The reslutin f the detectr amunts 1.9 kev fr C. The windw pening is set upn - 17 kev and the energy levels are analyzed using 496 channels. The fllwing table shws the measurement cnditins. The nuclides are identified by cmputer spectrmetry in cmbinatin with the nuclide gamma energy library GAMLIB [3]. The fllwing table summarizes the results f the selected nuclides f the PHA measurement. Figure 3 shws the gamma spectrum and appendix I gives the data f the measurement. R8. After such a measurement the scan device mves in axial directin t the next psitin. The decay crrectin fr the subsequent measurements in this case are all related t the time f the PHA-measurement that preceded the MIS, even if the measurements are perfrmed sme days later. In the figures 36 and 46 hwever a maximum can be nticed near 19 mm. The psitin f this lcal maximum and the crrespnding number f cunts have been calculated by slving the first derivative f the plynmial f the 58 C distributin t find a lcal maximum near 19 mm. T this end the cefficients f the plynmials f the nuclide distributins have been used as input fr the mathematical prgramme Eureka. The results, in number f cunts and in percentages, f the scans are shwn in the figures 4 thrugh 68. The cmputer data utput is given in the appendices thrugh VI. ECN-I

This psitin crrespnds t the centre f pellets in the specimen. The psitin f a value in a table crrespnds t the psitin f a GSW in the capsule as shwn in figure 1. This means that upper-right (nrtheast), lwer-right (sutheast), lwer-left (suthwest), upper-left (nrthwest) and centre in the table crrespnd t respectively GSWs 6, 7, 8, 9 and 1. 6 C The fllwing tables shw the values f the previus tables with respect t the maximum number f cunts in the tables. 54 Mn 6, 'C The tables shw a gradient in the thermal and fast neutrn flux frm east t west. The flat prfile f 58 C at the lwer half f the GSWs with respect t the prfile f Mn, bth prduced by fast neutrns, is caused by burn ut f C by thermal neutrns. Due t this burn ut 6 C is prduced in the GSWs. This effect culd explain the shift f the psitin f the maximum f 6 C in the GSWs with respect t the maxima f 51 Cr and 59 Fe. The figures with the relative variance f 58 C t 54 Mn (figs. 16, 9, 4, 55 and 68) shw a minimum f 58 C near mm. This psitin crrespnds t mm where 6 C has its maximum in the GSWs. ECN-l

24 5. SUMMARY AND REMARKS The lcatin f the specimen was nt n the maximum f the neutrn fluence. The nuclides 51 Cr and 59 Fe shw a maximum at abut 137 mm with respect t the bttm side f the gamma scan wires. The specimen were lcated at -3 mm with respect t rhe bttm side f the gamma scan wires. The flat prfile f the C distributin at the lwer half f the gamma scan wires is due t burn ut f C by thermal neutrns. Due t this effect C is prduced what culd culd explain the shift f the maximum f 6b C with respect t 51 Cr and *Fe. ECN-I
