1 Setting up a Microsoft Outlook Account What you need to know NOTE: Please contact the Help Desk of your Internet Service Provider (ISP) before setting up Microsoft Outlook as your mail program. You need to know the exact address of your Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) which only they can provide. NOTE: These steps are included to assist you in setting up your account and reflect Outlook Should you require assistance, please call TREB s Help Desk at (416) Microsoft Outlook is a personal and contact management program with an component. By using Outlook you are able to store your Contacts and Messages (as well as your Calendar appointments) on your personal computer. You can also archive and/or backup messages, calendar items, and contacts. The topics in this segment describe how to set up an account in Microsoft Outlook. To successfully complete the procedures outlined in this article, you must have Microsoft Outlook installed on your computer. To check if Microsoft Outlook is on your computer, go to the Task bar, click Start and point to Programs. If you have Microsoft Outlook on your machine, you will see it in the Program list. Setting up a Microsoft Outlook account To set up your account: 1. In the Task bar, click Start. 2. In the Start menu, point to Programs, then click Microsoft Office then Microsoft Office Outlook. Microsoft Outlook opens. 3. In the Menu bar, click Tools, then Accounts. 1

2 k Accounts 4. In the Accounts wizard, click the radio button beside Add a new account. Add a new account 5. Click Next. 6. In the Server Type screen, click the radio button beside POP3 if you are setting a Trebnet.com account. (Hint: If you are setting up a different ISP account, refer to your ISP s set-up instructions.) 2

Under User Information, type your name, as you want people to see it when they get mail from you, beside Your Name. 9. Type your trebnet address beside Address. 3

10. Under Logon Information, type your User Name and E-mail Password. These were assigned to you when you became a TREB member. TIP: If your e-mail address is ssmith@trebnet.

The password is in the TREB welcome letter. If you do not know what your user name and/or e- mail password is then contact the Help Desk at Under Server Information: Type mail.trebnet.com beside Incoming mail server (POP3). Type your ISP s SMTP beside Outgoing mail server. For example, if Rogers is your ISP, your SMTP is probably smtp.broadband.rogers.com. If Sympatico is your ISP, then your SMTP is either smtp1.sympatico.ca, or smtp8.symatico.ca. Check with your provider to confirm these. Place a check mark beside Remember password if desired. Do not place a check mark beside Log on using Secure Password Authentication. 12. Click More Settings. The Internet Settings dialogue box opens. Outgoing Server 4

5 Place a check mark beside My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication. Click on Log on using. Type your user name, which is your address with your ISP, for example suzie_smith@rogers.com. Type your password used to access your (your ISP address password). If you don t remember your password, call the Help Desk of your ISP. Click OK. 13. Click Next. A congratulations screen appears confirming that your account has been set up successfully. 14. Click Finish to exit the Internet Accounts dialogue box. You have successfully set up your trebnet using Outlook. To make Microsoft Outlook your default mail programme, go to the following section. Using Microsoft Outlook as your default program If you intend to use Microsoft Outlook as your default program, you will need make the following adjustments in Internet Explorer. To make Microsoft Outlook your default program: 1. Double-click the Internet Explorer shortcut on your desktop to start the program. 2. In the Menu bar, click Tools, then Internet Options. 3. In the Internet Options dialogue box, click the Programs tab. 5

Click the down arrow beside the Contact list field, select Microsoft Outlook, then click OK. 6. To close Internet Explorer, click the X in the upper right hand corner of your browser. You have successfully set up Microsoft Outlook and may begin using it to . TIP: If you open Outlook Express after setting up Microsoft Outlook as your default programme, the following dialogue box may appear. To avoid problems with Microsoft Outlook, click No. 6
