2 Technical information on PCB fabrication in Techno-Service S.A. 1. Introduction We fabricate double sided and multilayer printed circuit boards and single sided printed circuit boards as per Client specification. Documentation drawn up in accordance with standard formats shall be provided as a digital copy. 2. Data format Please submit the circuit designs in the following formats: Gerber RS274-X (Extended Gerber); Gerber RS274-D; Excellon; Sieb&Meyer; ODB++; *.brd files (Eagle) for up to 4-layer circuits. Divide design data into three sections: 1. Connection network, masks, descriptions: Preferred Gerber RS274-X with defined apertures saved in a file; Gerber RS274-D with defined apertures in a separate file (required): Aperture code Shape Dimension (X,Y) D12 Rectangle 12 x 30 D13 Round 10 x 10 D14 Square 6 x 8 If not otherwise specified, shape dimensions are defined as: first dimension - X axis, second dimension - Y axis. The dimensions shall be expressed with the same unit (e.g. mils). 2. Drilling (drill file): Excellon format (preferred); Sieb&Meyer format; Gerber format (with diameters); For blind vias provide two files (drilling program) one with through holes and the other with blind vias. 3. Machining (milling, scoring etc.): Excellon format (preferred); Gerber format (with milling diameters); Engineering drawing; Sieb&Meyer format; PDF, JPG, GIF, BMP or other standard formats. Documentation conforming to our guidelines cuts down the production time and eliminates possible errors. 2

3 2.1. General Use specific names for each layer to dispel all doubts concerning the layer. Also a separate file with reference to specific files and layers can be prepared. Include board outline defined as a separate layer and engineering drawing (especially for circuits with shape other than rectangular, that require shape routing and circuits with cut outs). Specified hole diameters are final. Minimum final PTH diameters depends on laminate thickness, see table below: Laminate thickness (mm) Minimum permissible PHT diameter (mm) All comments are to be included in: a) order or inquiry form on our website b) Operation Sheet; c) separate text file included with the project files Documentation Submit via and the Place an order and Offer inquiry section; CD, USB flash drive - in the Customer Service Department. PCB names shall not exceed 10 characters and may change only if PCB design is modified. Use different names for different PCB versions, e.g. PCB/1, PCB/2 or PCB/a, PCB/b ) to avoid confusion. Remember: Plated through holes are drilled with a drill size 0.1 mm larger than final hole diameter. 3

4 3. PCB machining 3.1. Drilling (CNC) Minimum hole for standard printed circuits: 0.2 mm; Standard hole diameter: 0.4 mm; NPTH tolerance: ± 0.1 mm PTH tolerance: +0.10/-0.05 mm; Holes with > 6 mm diameter are routed. Mark NPTH in an unambiguous way: drill file, Operation Sheet, separate text file. Example All pads and copper areas under the NPT will be cut with a 6 mils clearance (Fig. 1). 5 In case when such cuts cannot be inserted in the project it has to be clearly marked by inserting the note: holes with no metallization and copper cut. In this case there is an additional drilling operation before the etching. a) 3.2. Scoring (CNC) Mill φ 2 mm Minimum copper track clearance (tracks, pads, material, etc.) from the scoring line depends on laminate thickness: Laminate thickness (mm) Minimum copper clearance from scoring line (mm) b) Mill φ 2 mm The minimum laminate thickness for two-sided scoring: 0.8 mm; Laminate with thickness < 0.8 mm is scored from one side only; Scoring is carried out along straight lines only Milling (CNC) Milling tolerance: ±0.10 mm; Standard milling: 2 mm mill (boards with break-out tabs); Available mill diameters (mm): 0.8, 1, 1.2, 1.5, 2, 2.4; Minimum distance between tracks and board edge: 0.25 mm; Required distance between small boards (< 40 mm) is 7 mm; Break-out tab parameters (Fig. 2). The location and type of bridges are selected so as to maintain the minimal distance from the tracks, pads and mass on PCBs from the edge of the perforation holes: - 6 mils for double-sided PCBs - 10 mils for multilayer PCBs PCB panels We recommend use of panels for small area printed boards. 5

7 4. Outer layers and additional operations Available silkscreen colours: white (standard), yellow, black; Other colours - on request; Correct and incorrect layer with silkscreen (Fig. 5). The silkscreen over the pads and solder points will be removed Solder mask Standard mask colour is green, and the mask is applied by curtain coating; We offer different colours: white, red, blue and black applied by screen printing; At copper thickness over the standard thickness (35 µm) the mask is applied by screen printing; Minimum layer thickness is measured from the track edge 10 µm Peelable solder mask Mask thickness ca. 0.3 mm; Maximum diameter of a hole coated by the mask is 2 mm; Peelable solder mask is used for up to 2 mm PTH only. The holes of larger diameter may be not completely covered with peelable mask. Peelable solder mask is applied on ready boards and panels Graphite paste - application by screen printing The components on a graphite mask shall be increased by 10 mils compared to pattern components. The mask shall expose the whole surface of graphite coated components! 4.4. Silkscreen Minimum width of a silkscreen line is 6 mils; (a) Fig. 5. 8 4.7. Chamfering For edge connectors at the whole PCB length at 45 (Fig. 6). 1. If α=45, X=0.675 mm; 2. If α=30, X=1.17 mm. Edge connector contacts (Fig. 7). The PCB can be marked with UL (Underwriter Laboratoratories) logotype, date and our logo. The legend is applied on a section specified by the Client or standard section or mask on TOP side. For printed boards without mask and legend, the markings are applied on the pattern. Client specifies the position and layer for UL logotype. Otherwise the UL logotype will be applied in the most suitable position (silkscreen or mask). UL logotype is made as per the following: Fig. 6. PCB chamfering. Standard d = 0.2 mm. For 4-layer PCB, minimum annular ring size for inner layers is 8 mils, and for multilayer PCB is min. 10 mils. Minimum pattern parameters for 35 µm copper layer. 10 7. Additional information 7.1. Testing We recommend PCB tests for layout with two-sided SMD Obligatory tests of multilayer PCB with BGA, with minimum track width and spacing < 6 mils, with graphite paste and mask colour other than green. 8. BGA PCB BGA (Ball Grid Array) circuits are intended for surface mounting (Fig. 9, 10) Data on laminates Maximum PCB bow and twist (IPC-D-300): %; Thickness tolerances of offered laminates are presented in table below. Since the pins are led under the PCB, there are many dangers in a process of fabrication and installation of the components. The main danger is a removal of mask from vias and tracks adjacent to soldering points, causing short circuits. The PCB cannot be recovered, and therefore it is important to maintain the required parameters. 10

Vias between BGA soldering points must be masked (Fig. 11). Hole 0.2 mm (8 mils) Exposed mask area 0.43 mm (17 mils), i.e. 2 mils/side For PCB with two-sided SMD it is recommended to indicate side for installation with glue to obtain suitable tin area (does not apply to chemical gold plated printed boards). Double sided PCB Maximum double sided PCB dimensions: 465 x 583 mm; Available laminate thickness: standard: 0.80 mm, 1.0 mm, 1.2 mm, 1.55 mm; other (on request): 0.55 mm, 2.0 mm, 2.4 mm, 3.2 mm. Laminates with thickness other than 1.55 mm are available for prototypes and small lot production. Contact us to determine a delivery deadline for non-standard large lot production. 11

12 Copper foil thickness: standard: double sided PCB 18 µm, single sided PCB 35 µm; other (on request). Maximum PCB bow and twist (IPC-D-300): %. D (a) 10. Multilayer PCB D General Due to its specific properties, multilayer PCB requires special attention. Fabrication of multilayer PCB requires higher precision compared to dual layer technology. Pad and hole diameter ratio (annular ring size) requires special attention since the low ratio may result in short-circuit. d (b) Fig. 12. Hole, pad (a) and anti-pad (b) diameters. Recommended pad D, anti-pad D and hole d diameter (Fig. 12). For 4-layer PCB, minimum distance D-d = 0.4 mm (16 mils), i.e. annular ring size is 8 mils. For 6- and 8-layer PCB, minimum distance D-d = 0.5 mm (20 mils), i.e. annular ring size is 10 mils Multilayer PCB machining d Maximum multilayer PCB dimensions: 421 x 573 (mm); Standard end laminate thickness 1.55 mm ±10%. Other laminate thickness - on request; 12

13 Standard end copper foil thickness: inner and outer layer 35 µm. Other copper thickness on request; Minimum distances: outer layers - 5 mils, inner layers - 6 mils. Minimum material, track or pad distance from PCB edge is 0.5 mm (20 mils) Example multilayer PCB Standard PCB design (Fig. 14, Fig. 15, Fig. 16). 18 µm foil Specify layer order (Fig. 13), e.g. by using proper layer file names, e.g. Pcb.gtl, Pcb.g1, Pcb.g2, Pcb.gbl 18 µm foil Fig layer PCB. 18 µm foil Fig. 13.
