1 St. Mary Catholic Church Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time March 3, 2019 Dear Parishioners and Friends of St. Mary, My apologies for not communicating in a while on the proposed building project here at St. Mary. Over the past several months, we have had several meetings with the finance people here at the Parish. We have also spoken with a consultant who went through our finances with a fine-tooth comb. The proposed building project had a price tag of nearly $5 million. After crunching the data as well as our financial numbers, we will not be able to realize this project at the present time. Based on consultation and data, we would be placing ourselves in a very burdensome financial position and would have a very difficult time funding the day-to-day operations as a parish community here at St. Mary. Our next step will be to form a small committee to see how we can improve the buildings we currently have on our campus. God s Peace and Blessings for a Hopeful Future, Fr. Roman Archdiocese of Milwaukee Kenosha, Wisconsin

The blessing and distribution of ashes on Ash Wednesday normally takes place during the celebration of Mass. March 6 ~ Ash Wednesday 8:00am School Mass, Noon Prayer Service, and 6:30pm Mass Annual Lenten Soup Supper Ash Wednesday ~ March 6 from 4:30pm to 6:30pm in Bell Hall On Ash Wednesday, March 6, 2019 from 4:30pm - 6:30pm; the Human Concerns Committee will again sponsor a simple soup and bread meal in Bell Hall. Come and share a simple meal as we begin our Lenten journey. Free will offering. Fasting interrupts our ability to eat whenever and whatever we wish and reminds us of the millions who fast involuntarily in a world where feast and famine are neighbor. Annual Rice Bowl Collection Beginning on Ash Wednesday, March 6, the Human Concerns annual Rice Bowl Program will begin. Rice Bowls allow us to reach beyond our own parish and beyond national boundaries to become a truly Catholic parish. [U.S. Bishops, 1997] Rice Bowls will be available on Ash Wednesday, and through the first weekend of Lent. Use the Rice Bowls to share a part of your wealth with the needy and hungry of the world. Rice Bowls will be collected during Holy Week. Catholic Relief Services sponsors the Operation Rice Bowl Program. They ask that we pray for the poor of the world and share some of our resources with them. 2 Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time March 3, 2019

Mardi Gras is French for Fat Tuesday, reflecting the practice of the last night of eating rich, fatty foods before the ritual fasting of the Lenten season. Mardi Gras arrived in the United States as a French Catholic tradition with the Le Moyne brothers. In New Orleans, the celebration nearly always involves the use of masks and costumes by its participants in their parade. For a more mellow family event, a dinner of home-made fluffy pancakes topped with fruit and whip cream. Ash Wednesday opens Lent, a season of fasting and prayer. Today we proclaim our penance to the world. The ashes we receive, the dies cinerum (day of ashes), are the result of burning blessed palm fronds from the previous year s Palm Sunday. The ashes symbolize the dust from which God made us. 7 Deacon Wilson s Wisdom... HUMAN VISION The ending of Luke s beatitudes sermon is reflected in today s Gospel focusing on the principles that should govern the lives of disciples. Without the guidance of the earthly Jesus and the modeling of most of the discipleeyewitnesses, followers of Jesus learned the gospels and the meaning of the Christin way of life from those who already lived it. Those Christians living in community were responsible for one another, as teachers, guides, and prophets by their words and their works. From this early environment comes this familiar scriptural council taken from last Sunday s gospel: Be merciful just as your Father is merciful! Jesus call to be merciful helps us better understand what kind of blindness he is talking about: Can a blind person guide a blind person? It is his caution against leaders who don t know their own need for mercy, haven t experienced mercy, and therefore cannot act with mercy. Today we are still struggling to remember that Jesus calls us beyond our faults, compassionately asking us to open ourselves to new possibilities. New Testament scholar, John Barclay reminds us: God s raising a crucified Jew from Nazareth as Messiah and Lord recalibrates human worth, requiring us to have new eyes for our neighbor and especially for the most vulnerable among us. Coupled with the example of the blind Jesus taught that all people are loved abundantly by God leading the blind, Jesus pointed out the deadly seriousness people experience when they follow false guides. What a sad image of people who have a log protruding from their eye, and focuses on the splinter in another s eye. The problem is that people with distorted vision cannot see another clearly. Those who look on others with the clear eyes of mercy and compassion have the vision necessary to help them grow. When we admit our own sinfulness and have accepted the help necessary to move forward, we can humbly reach out our hand to help others. We know the joy created when we have the blindness removed from our own eyes. Theologian Richard Rohr speaks of this situation when he said: We need to look at Jesus until we can look out at the world with his kind of eyes. This realization often comes from reading the lives of the saints or experiencing the power of a 12-step group. It seems that the closer we get to God, the humbler we become. Today s gospel summarizes Jesus warning about those who think they see clearly. Only those who admit they have limited vision and know they have much to learn about God s ways, are the ones whom we can trust to orient us toward the mysteries God wants to reveal to us. In all that he said and did, in all his journeys among us, Jesus taught that all people---every single kind and group of people are loved abundantly by God and God invites us to that kind of loving. We will soon leave Ordinary Time and begin another Lenten journey. Maybe we should carry a splinter or bag of sawdust around with us. That splinter might remind us that sawdust is nothing compared to the log that we should examine and remove as part of our daily Lenten practice. If we are successful, we may discover love like we have never known love before. ~ Deacon Wilson Shierk (262) Fax accurateprintcom@sbcglobal.net of Kenosha Dan & Ann Kurpis Owner, Manager Parish Members th Place (262) Fax Hr.
