STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT Like St. Paul in the second reading, the good steward can say, I do for the sake of the Gospel in the hope of sharing in its blessings. EUCHARISTIC ADORATION Eucharistic Adoration will be held in Church the Thursday before the First Friday of each month from 5:30-6:30 PM. The next date will be March 1st. NOTE: Confessions will only be heard 5:30-6:30 PM. PERSONS WITH CELIAC DISEASE: We welcome you to receive from the chalice. Please come to the sacristy and speak to the Priest or Deacon before Mass. ASH WEDNESDAY SCHEDULE February 14th Ashes will be distributed during Masses at: 8:00 AM, 12:10 and 7:00 PM and at a prayer service at 4:00 PM. The collection on Ash Wednesday is for the support of Catholic Evangelization LAWS OF FASTING Anyone between the ages of 18 and 59 should observe the Laws of Fasting. On Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, one meatless full meal is permitted. The other two meatless meals may be taken according to one s needs. Together they should not equal a full meal. LAWS OF ABSTINENCE Those 14 years and older should abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and ALL the Fridays of Lent. As Catholics, we should feel a strong obligation to be faithful to the Lenten Laws of sacrifice.

3 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK: Again, I repeat the notice from the Diocese as the Flu outbreak has not gotten any better. Please continue to be cautious in your hand washing and other practices. Here are some recommendations: 1. We should let our parishioners know that if they are feeling sick that not only is it acceptable to stay home from Mass but it might be the right decision to do so. 2. The sharing of the chalice/communion under both species should be suspended during this season 3. The Faithful should be encouraged to receive Communion in the hand. 4. Shaking hands during the sign of peace should be something that parishioners should feel is ok to refrain from during these days 5. Extraordinary ministers should utilize hand sanitizer prior to distribution of Communion Hand Sanitizer is also available at all entry points to the church. Lent is Approaching: Well, actually it does not begin until Wednesday February 14. Before that season begins we have this weekend and 1 more Sunday of Ordinary time. To prepare for that we still need to begin to do a few things. Firstly, we will be accepting your old palm branches from last year. There a basket in the Narthex. This will give you ample time to return them. The other thing to keep in mind is that we will be distributing Little Black Books on the weekend before Ash Wednesday. These are a wonderful addition to your Lenten devotions. The idea is to spend 7 minutes a day to learn something and to pray and meditate about it. I have distributed these for many years and they have been extremely popular! There will be 500 only of these so be sure to take it and use it! THE FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Page 3 FAITH FORMATION OFFICE PHONE: (508) StPiusXFaithFormation@comcast.net Announcement: Candidates preparing for Confirmation will celebrate the Sacrament on Saturday, April 28th at the 6:00 PM Mass. Rehearsal is scheduled for Friday, April 27 th at 6 PM. Please mark your calendars! Did you remember to bring some cash or a check to buy caring cards this week? The Mission: We see, in the Gospel today, the story picks up from last week on the same Sabbath that Jesus taught in the synagogue. He now goes to Simon s house and cures Simon s mother in law by grasping her hand. The Authority of Jesus we heard about last week continues as after sunset (no longer the Sabbath) the whole town seems to come to him to be cured. But he could not stay there as the mission and the preaching continues to other places. So it is for us! We encounter this Christ and are called to bring His love and healing to others. May we respond to our baptismal call, live it, and bring that good news with us today. Questions of the Week: Adults: What can I do to be better prepared to proclaim the Good news with conviction? Children: How can I share my faith and trust in Jesus with my friends? Smile from the Mooney Archives: A new business was opening, and one of the owner s friends sent flowers for the occasion. But when the owner read the card with the flowers, it said. Rest in Peace The owner was little upset and called the florist to complain. After he had told the florist about the obvious mistake, the florist said, Sir, I m really sorry for the mistake, but rater than getting angry, you should imagine this: Somewhere there is a funeral taking place today, and they have flowers with a note saying, Congratulations on you new location. MESSAGE FROM CAPE COD HOSPITAL PASTORAL CARE OFFICE There is a priest on call at all times at Cape Cod Hospital, the Hospital Chaplain. If your loved one is a patient there and in need of a priest, ask the patient s nurse to page the priest on call. The hospital switchboard can also be called to page the priest on call. If it is not an emergency, you may also call the Pastoral Care Office at (508) If your loved one is a patient at Cape Cod Hospital, this is the appropriate way to contact a priest, please do not contact local parishes as it only causes confusion and delay. Also remember, Sacraments can only be received by the living, so contact the Hospital Chaplain sooner rather than later. Thank you. Visit (Parish Code: HCJFNP)

4 ST. PIUS X SCHOOL * to learn the Catholic faith and follow in the footsteps of Jesus Christ *to grow spiritually, academically and socially *to lead a life of faith, service, and integrity The theme for this national week of celebration was Catholic Schools: Learn. Serve, Lead, Succeed. These qualities were recognized in students who confidently assisted as tour guides, in the evidence of our academic achievement, and in our partnership with community organizations. These qualities were part of our Cape-wide Catholic Schools Mass, our own Day of Adoration, and in the social interactions witnessed among all facets of the school community. Check our website and our Facebook page to witness the recent experiences of our students! Our Middle School houses are commended for their efforts this past week. They collaborated with Lower School students to serve the needs of people in the community. One of our students, Alyssa Whiting, posted this comment about St. Pius X School: I think the school is a great example for other Catholic schools because it shows great leadership. The students that go here exemplify leadership by providing guidance to the Lower School and other Middle School grades in our house system. In gratitude, we thank Fr. Paul, Fr. Chris, and all the parishioners of St. Pius X Parish whose efforts have advanced the mission of our Catholic school.
