1 Salem Community College Course Title: Color Theory Course Code: ART 119 Lecture Hours: 2 Lab Hours: 2 Credits: 3 Course Description: This course will study color relationships and their influence on design/composition as well as how color is used to influence the emotional and intellectual responses of the viewer. Students will develop problem solving, critical thinking, art historical knowledge, and craftsmanship through design projects. This course seeks to improve the student s ability to use color in visual communication as well as the ability to articulate ideas and opinions about the use of color in art and design. Prerequisite: None. Place in College Curriculum: Art 119 is required for the AFA in Studio Art program. Art 119 may be taken as an open elective requirement for those students pursuing either a certificate or degree program. Date of Last Revision: March 2012

4 Course Performance Objective #1 ART119 Color Theory page 4 Students will explore the properties of color using paint and mixed media to develop their problem solving skills and proficiency in the use of color in design and visual communication. Learning Outcomes: Students will: 1. employ acrylic paint to make a color wheel and demonstrate competence in color mixing. 2. employ acrylic paint to make an achromatic narrative design exploring the influence of form on content within a work of art. 3. employ acrylic paint to make a design demonstrating transparency through color. 4. employ acrylic paint to make a design demonstrating the effects of color on spatial illusions within a work of art. 5. employ acrylic paint to make a design demonstrating the use of color intensity and color temperature to suggest rhythm in a design. 6. employ acrylic paint to make a copy of a painting by a Master artist focusing on color, and create a revised color scheme for that painting. 7. employ acrylic paint and/or paint swatches to make a color study demonstrating mastery of simultaneous contrast and color subtraction. 8. employ acrylic paint and/or paint swatches to make a patterned design demonstrating an understanding of the Bezold effect and optical color mixtures. 9. employ acrylic paint to make a painting of a still life object painted at different times during the day to explore the role of natural light on color perception. 10. employ acrylic paint to make a painting demonstrating the use of color symbolism. 11. employ acrylic paint to make a painting exploring the role color relationships play in the viewers emotional and intellectual response to the work. 12. employ mixed media to make a collage demonstrating an understanding of triadic, splitcomplementary, and/or warm and cool color schemes using images and patterns found on the internet or in books and magazines. 13. employ acrylic paint and mixed media to make a revised version of the achromatic narrative design demonstrating the influence of color relationships on other aspects of form and content. Course Performance Objective #2 The students will participate in a verbal discussion with other classmates about their projects. These discussions, known as "critiques," are designed to help each student grow as an artist through constructive criticism of his/her work. Learning Outcomes: Students will: 1. evaluate the works on display from an emotional point of view. 2. judge the technical aspects of the design studies to include execution, neatness, and presentation. 3. assess the effect of the composition on the overall visual form of the work and will discuss how his/her design study relates to the assignment. 4. assess the composition with regard to cultural significance of the subject matter presented.

Learning Outcomes: Students will: 1. further their understanding of color theory through vocabulary and art history quizzes. 2. develop their critical thinking skills through reaction papers related to art and color theory.

6 General Education Requirements: ART119 Color Theory page 6 Goals covered in 'Color Theory are critical thinking, problem solving, communication, aesthetic perspective and information literacy. Outcomes Assessment: A college-wide outcomes assessment program has been put into place to enhance the quality and effectiveness of the curriculum and programs at Salem Community College. As part of this assessment program, the learning outcomes for this course will be assessed. Assessment methods may include tests, quizzes, papers, reports, projects and other instruments. Course Activities: Classroom experiences will include various teaching techniques, classroom work, homework in the form of design study assignments, and may include field trips.
