Setcavage Insurance, Coverage and Claims Expert Mediator United States District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania Biography Stuart Setcavage began his career in the insurance industry after graduating college by working for his father s insurance agency. He has received formal training in all personal lines of insurance. Combined, his family has over 100 years of experience in the insurance industry. In 1988, he became a Claim Representative with State Farm Insurance Companies. After several advancements and promotions, he joined the State Farm Litigation Unit as a Claims Supervisor in There, he supervised all aspects of auto litigation including third party lawsuits, contractual and extra-contractual suits against the company. In 1997, he was promoted again to Claim Superintendent managing a claims service center and automobile claims across Southwestern Pennsylvania. In 2004, Stuart returned to litigation management as a Litigation Team Manager for State Farm, managing an average of approximately 1800 pending cases with both in-house and outside counsel across the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. On average, he has been directly involved in about 100 jury trials per year and over settlements per year. He has directly managed, personally handled, audited or surveyed approximately 25,000 claims during his claims career. He has handled cases involving policyholders from every state. Mr. Setcavage holds All Lines Adjusters License s in Texas and Florida. Because Pennsylvania does not license adjusters, through these licenses he enjoys reciprocity with most states that require licensing. Setcavage Consulting, LLC Page 2

3 During his claims career, he has been involved in the daily activities of investigating, evaluating, negotiating, analyzing coverage and claims. Both inside State Farm and within the insurance, legal and legislative community, he is viewed as an expert in many insurance related matters. While at State Farm, Mr. Setcavage was involved in policy training, policy language changes and writing, and has been a resource for many claim representatives and lawyers relative to complex auto law issues. Mr. Setcavage is a Past-President of the Board of Directors for the Pennsylvania Defense Institute (PDI). At PDI, he also has served as the Chair of several committees and developed several continuing legal education programs throughout the state. He has served as the Chairman of the Coverage and Claims Practices Committee, the Amicus Curiae Committee, and the Judicial and Legislative Affairs Committees and was a member of the Auto Law Committee. Mr. Setcavage was called upon to testify on important matters involving the Pennsylvania Financial Responsibility Law before the Pennsylvania Senate Banking and Insurance Committee. Additionally, he is a frequent lecturer at Continuing Legal Education seminars and is a faculty member for the Pennsylvania Bar Institute and the Pennsylvania Association for Justice. He has also lectured for the Pennsylvania Defense Institute, the Florida Justice Association, and for State Farm Insurance Companies. Relative to automobile insurance coverage, bad faith, case value, and claims handling best practices, Mr. Setcavage is nationally recognized as a leading expert. He is also considered an industry expert relative to tripartite relationships, legal billing, alternative fee arrangements, and legal bill auditing. He has counseled both law firms and insurers on alternative legal fee agreements and has implemented several within State Farm. He has piloted and studied the merits of various types of fee agreements. Mr. Setcavage is a trained certified and approved mediator by the United States District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania. Further, he is a trained certified inter-company arbitrator and has acted as the sole arbitrator on hundreds of cases involving inter-company claim disputes. After 24 years in the industry, he founded Setcavage Consulting, LLC and its subsidiary, Grant Street Claims LLC. Mr. Setcavage now specializes in mediation and arbitration services in all types of disputes, expert insurance and claims consulting services, case valuation opinions, bad faith analysis and opinions, and expert insurance coverage analysis and opinions.
