1 April 7, 2019 Fifth Sunday of Lent SPOrOn... April 7, 2019 Page Romeo Plank Rd. Clinton Twp. MI Phone: Fax: Jerry's Journal Recently I attended a presentation by John Allen, a prominent American journalist. John Allen is the editor of the Roman Catholic website, Crux. Additionally, he has lived and worked in Rome for 16 years and covered news about the Holy See and the pontificates of three different popes. He was the senior correspondent for the National Catholic Reporter and has been called America s leading analyst of all things related to the Vatican. In his presentation John Allen referred to the changing face of the Roman Catholic Church in the United States and worldwide. What is obvious is that immigrants now make up a considerable share of Catholics in America. At the same time, there has been a regional shift from the Northeast and the Midwest (long home to a large percentage of the Catholic faithful) to the Western and Southern parts of the country. Despite the number of people who have left the Catholic Church in recent years, still roughly one in five U.S. adults maintain their primary religious affiliation is with the Catholic Church. Listed below are a few other key demographic characteristics of Roman Catholics in the United States and in other parts of the world as well. Catholics are more likely than other Americans to be immigrants or children of immigrants. More than one quarter of U.S. Catholic adults (27%) were born outside the United States, compared with 15% of U.S. adults overall. Most of these Catholic immigrants (22% of all U.S. Catholics) come from Central and South America. The share of U.S. Catholics who are from Central and South America will continue to grow. Back in 1991, close to nine in 10 Catholics in the United States were of European descent. Today that percentage is 55% and it will continue to trend downward. The majority of Catholics under 30 in this country are Hispanic (52%). Hispanic families also tend to have larger families than other Catholic racial or ethnic groups. Yet, when it comes to positions of leadership in the Catholic Church, Hispanics are underrepresented. According to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, there are 284 active bishops, but only about 10% of them are Hispanic. Presently, there is a large educational gap among Catholics. Catholics who are of European descent have attained some of the highest levels of education in the United States, with 63% having some type of college education. On the other hand, 30% of Hispanic Catholics have some college education. Projections hold that this gap between Catholics of European ancestry and Central and South American Catholics will shrink substantially over the course of the next several decades. Catholics in the United States are almost evenly split among the two major political parties. According to exit polls from the 2018 elections for the U.S. House of Representatives, nearly identical shares of Catholics voted for Democrats (50%) and Republicans (49%). The majority of Catholics of European descent (58%) voted Republican while 62% of Hispanic Catholics voted Democrat. The number of U.S. Catholics who are of European descent has dropped dramatically over the past decade. In % of Catholics of European descent who were baptized and raised Catholic stated they no longer identified themselves with their church of Baptism. In 2018, that number soared to 41%. It is still too soon to say whether this trend has reached rock bottom or will continue to decline. No other religious group has experienced anything close to this ratio of losses. Without a doubt, the recent documented scandals involving Catholic clergy is a significant contributing factor to this decline. There is, however, some evidence that, as people grow older, those who had previously abandoned Catholicism return to the practice of the faith. (Continued on Page 9)

9 April 7, 2019 Fifth Sunday of Lent Page 9 St. Paul of Tarsus Library What: Our parish library contains hundreds of books and DVDs for children, teens and adults. Where: Enter the office suite, go left down the hall. It's on your left. Who: For all parish members, free of charge. How: Parishioners may check out all books and DVDs, except reference books, which may be used in the library. Books may be checked out for 3 weeks, DVDs for 1 week. No library card is necessary. Using our self check-out system, just fill out the library card in the back of the book or DVD and place it in the check-out box. The library volunteers extend a (Jerry s Journal Continued from page 1) Despite the increased number of U.S. Catholics who are of Central and South American descent, the Catholic Church in the United States, Canada and Europe is in decline. More than two-thirds of Catholics world-wide now live in the Southern Hemisphere. From 2004 to 2050 Catholic populations are projected to increase 146% in Africa, 63% in Asia, and 42% in Central America, South American and the Caribbean. To put this matter in other way, the demographics of what had been strongholds for the Catholic Church (Europe, the United States and Canada) are trending in a negative direction. Countries which were once bastions of Catholicism may soon be viewed as pagan or missionary countries if present trends continue to hold true. Fr. Jerry Slowinski Please Pray for the Sick: Please remember that we are starting this list afresh: Margaret Braga Lucas Carlson (New) Rosie Ciczon Amelia Cunningham (New) Larry Evert Mark Evert Ed Gregg (New) Brandon Keskitalo Patricia H. Labadie (New) Sam Lobato (New) Robert Pastrick (New) Tom Ploeger Ray Weidenfeller (New) Marty Wilhelm (New) Robert Zurack (New) Please note: We will always add the name of a person to the parish sick list if the person who is ill has requested prayers. If the person who is ill cannot make a request, and there is a family member, caregiver, or guardian who wishes to place a person s name on the sick list, we need the name, address, and phone number of the person making the request for prayers. We are now in the process of composing a form that the family member, caregiver, or guardian can complete, either in the parish office or by going online to the parish website. Once a person s name appears on the parish sick list the name of the person who is ill would remain in the bulletin for a period of four weeks. After four weeks, it would be the responsibility of the person who made the original appeal for prayers to fill out a second request if further prayers are needed.
