w o r d f r o m o u r b u r s a r One of the apt explanations for peace is: freedom from anxiety, disturbance (emotional, mental, or spiritual), or inner conflict; calmness, tranquility. Pope Francis, in his message on the World Day of Peace, asked the international community and every individual to foster a culture of care by advancing on the path of fraternity, justice and peace between individuals, communities, peoples and nations. Pope stressed that there can be no peace without a culture of care. There is no one without problem in life. What makes one s life peaceful is the awareness that there is someone who is stronger, who can manage the present issues that one face in life. It can be our parents, friends, relatives, and, above all, God. We may be victims of suppression in families, or oppression in society. All the time, we hear bundles of issues that destroy the peace of individuals, society and nations at large. But still what must echo in every one's life is: How can I be a promoter of peace? If you and I need to be promoters of peace, we must personally experience peace within ourselves.this chain of care for each other results in peace. Always remember peacefulness does not rest in the sanctions and agreements alone. It lies in the hearts and minds of people and their total commitment and surrender. Let us all strive for the inner peace so that its rays may wrap all those we meet in our day to day life and in our life experiences. Rev.Fr.Biju Vadakkumcherry,CMI

E D I T O R I A L M E S S A G E Serenity is not freedom from the storm But peace in amid the storm. - S.A.Jefferson Wright A king had a great fascination and love for paintings. Once he announced a very valuable prize to the artist who would paint a beautiful picture depicting peace. On the final day of judgement, the king selected two in particular and now he had to choose one out of them. The first painting a beautiful calm lake with clear transparent water, the perfect mirror to the towering mountains surrounding it. Above it was the blue sky with white fluffy clouds floating in space. Anybody who saw the painting thought it was the perfect masterpiece representing Peace. The second painting had mountains too. Above these mountains, an angry sky overcast with dark clouds, lightning streaks here and there, a massive downpour of rains, rumbling ferocious waterfall cascading down on one side of the mountain. Peace?, thought the people who saw this painting. As the king looked closer, he saw a mother bird who made her nest on a branch of a tree behind the rumbling waterfalls. The mother bird was peacefully feeding her little ones with great affection. Which one do you think, did the king choose for his valuable prize? The second one! My dear ones, The Bible says in John 16:33 In this world you will have trouble. But take heart. Many times we suffer more often in imagination than in reality. Peace does not mean to be in a place where there is no chaos, trouble or hard realities to deal with. It means to be in the midst of all mayhems and still remain mentally, emotionally and physically centered. We need to remember that the darkest hour is just before the dawn. 4 V O I C E O F A L U M N I People often say that your childhood and young adulthood has a lot of avenues that can shape your life into a better one. What better place than one's school to be the platform for such a transition. Chavara, in my case has been the best platform of my early life. Growing up, I was a kid with a lot of ambitions and a passion for so many things. The different phases of every person's life will spring up different interests and somehow my school always had something to nurture me in every one of those phases. When I wanted to sing, our singing club took me in, when I wanted to write, our literary club inspired me, when I want to give back to the nature, the nature club had a task for me and knowing that I will want a wonderful career and a bright future, the Chavara family created that for me. Looking back today, I have so many beautiful memories about my school life and I still am best friends with a lot of my school friends. My teachers still treat me as their own kid and being a chavarite is an experience that is still making me feel the happiest. To all the current students, I just want to say, make use of your life's gift in the present and I assure you that it will be a valuable gift in your bright future. Dear Chavara, Thank you for everything. Smruthi Vijayaraghavan, Batch of 2013, BTech PGDM, Agile Business Analyst, Renault Nissan, Chennai.

V O I C E O F A L U M N I " School is the place where we evolve into who we are and what we are I started my schooling in Chavara Vidya Bhavan from my 1st grade. From that day till the last day, I had many experiences. Behind each of that experience I had a person whom we call teacher, our second Mother or Father. It s with them we had spent most of our time than our parents. Out of all those, I would like to share few experiences which I could never forget in my life. The beating from Mrs.Sushila, Mrs.Savathiri, Mrs.Krishnapriya, Mrs.Lakshmi and few other teachers laid the foundation stone and moulded my character to be a good human. The motivation given by Mrs. Christina during my Skating Journey in which I ve won respect and achievements. Mr. George, Mr.Vijay, Mrs.Sherin, Mrs.Sampoornam, Mrs.Ruby who supported and motivated my passion towards singing. Mr.Jerome the person who taught me the simple technique of how to gain knowledge and use it in life. Mrs.Usha the person who taught me how positive our life should be. My physical trainers Mr.Muthusamy & Mrs. Jasmine educated to be mentally and physically strong in every situation. Mr.Viji who showed me how humble a person should be in life. At last all the Respected Principals Fr.Philips, Fr.Jacob, Fr.David, Fr.Lintesh, who guided me to achieve the positivity and peace through devotion towards God. It will never be enough thanking these people who taught me who I have to be and what I have to be in my life. Ashwin Andrew Goldwyn F, B.E. Alumnus 2017

F O R E V E R L I N K E D The profession of a teacher is extremely rewarding since it gives the opportunity of becoming part of a person s life and imprint in his/her mind the knowledge that will allow him/her to achieve greater goal. I started my career as a teacher from Chavara. Each and every day was a new experience in my life. Chavara is like an another home for me. I will always remember how I got groomed under the guidance of Rev.Fr.Jacob Chungath. I strongly believe that Chavara has nurtured me and I experience the impact in my present life. Thank you Mrs.S.Priya Teacher Emeritus ( )

P A R E N T S ' C O R N E R G R O W I N G W I T H N A T U R E The highest education is that which does not merely give us information but makes our life in harmony with all existence. - Rabindranath Tagore It gives immense pleasure to pen down our thoughts for the students of Chavara Vidhya Bhavan. Children are always excited about discovering the wonders of nature and thirsty for information. Currently, the entire world faces a dangerous threat of climate change due to human ignorance and exploitation of natural resources. As the future lies in the hands of the students, they must play a crucial role in saving our environment and nature. We strongly believe that changes should begin with an individual, and the students must be educated and empowered to protect the environment. In our Indian traditions, nature and human beings are always interdependent, any disturbance in any one of them would jeopardize the entire ecological balance. As our ancestors understood this, many customary norms have been devised, and the people gave utmost importance and reverence to all aspects of nature to ensure environmental protection and proper usage. It was the dharma of each person in the society to protect nature, and the five important elements of nature called the Panchabhutas are divine incarnations to them.water and land is regarded as a collective commodity, the persons obstructing or diverting a watercourse or causing any damage to the embankments have charged for these activities. However, the human beings of this modern era have become rational and are behind the materialistic things that forced humans to detach themselves from nature. We feel it is high time to teach the value of nature and environment to the students. Reinforcing appropriate behaviour in day to day activities for natural resource conservation by teachers and parents would help to create a better environment for future generations. Planting a tree or plant, using water efficiently, segregating the degradable and non-degradable wastes, reduce the usage of plastics, keeping our surroundings clean, walking and cycling instead of using motor vehicles, reusing and recycling used materials are some lifestyle changes that will make a greater impact on the environment. We have faith that children growing with nature becomes good human beings and socially responsible citizens. Dr. T. Senthikumar, M.E, Ph.D., A.R.S ( Principal Scientist) Dr. V. 8 T U T E E S ' C O R N E R N A T I O N A L T E A C H E R S D A Y I have always felt that the true textbook of the pupil is his Teacher. - Mahatma Gandhi Teachers Day is celebrated all across India every year on 05 September, to pay tribute to the teachers for their precious contribution to the society. In fact, it is the birthday of our former President Dr.Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, who was a great scholar and statesman, highly devoted towards education. Students all over India celebrate this day with great enthusiasm. They honour their teachers and give them gifts as a token of respect. Teachers hold the real knowledge, empathy and generosity for their students. It is rightly said that "Teachers can change lives with just the right mix of chalk and challenges. I salute every teacher for their delicate contribution, services and encouragement. If we reach heights of success, it is only due to the guidance and prayers of our teachers. Teachers are the backbone of our society. They shape and build students personality and make them ideal citizens. Parents give birth to a child, whereas teachers mould that child's personality and provide the platform for a bright future. Teachers arouse our hearts with the light of knowledge and remove all sorts of ignorance. They inspire us to proceed forward, to build our ethic and prepare us to withstand obstacles of our life. They have not only taught us new ways to learn but also have motivated us during this lockdown. We venerate the teachers for their constant guidance and hard work in building up the life of the students. Also, it tends to raise awareness about the role of teachers in creating a healthy society. Teachers, you taught us to aim for success and to accept failure with courage. Thank you! S. JENILINE STANIA IX A

T U T E E S ' C O R N E R I N T E R N A T I O N A L D A Y O F C H A R I T Y It's not how much we give, but how much love we put into giving. - Mother Teresa The International Day of Charity is observed annually on 05 September as declared by the UN General Assembly in This day was chosen in order to commemorate the death anniversary of Mother Teresa, the Nobel Prize winner in 1979 for her yeoman contributions to overcome poverty and distress, which also constitute a threat to peace. The prime purpose of this day is to raise awareness and provide a common platform for charity related activities all over the world. Charity is a noble quality in a person that brings welfare in the society. Charity, as a matter of fact, is a very wide phenomena that cannot be described in words. It refers to any kind of assistance, giving love and care to those in need. We should help the needy from the bottom of our heart. It enlarges human heart and spreads the message of universality, love, compassion and care. Being charitable has a positive impact on the brain. It fills us with happiness, self satisfaction, make us feel good and exposes the importance of generosity. Charity makes us pure at heart. Selfishness and narrow mindedness disappear from our character. This can make us really great in our life. Start giving today and let us rise by lifting others. Let me conclude with one of the most inspiring quotes of Mother Teresa, Not all of us can do great things, but we can all do small things with great love. M.S. DAYAL VAIDIYAA - XII B

Luke 1: 42 The Feast of the Nativity of Mother Mary is celebrated each year on 08 September. Let us celebrate with joy the birth of Mother Mary, of whom was born our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Her birth constitutes the hope and the light of salvation for the whole world and her benign presence is light for the people. Lend your heart to Mother Mary and have a beautiful life ahead! Words are not enough to explain the glories of Mother Mary. Feel the magical love of Mother Mary by sharing peace around us. Birthday wishes to the Holy Mother Mary! Share the inner peace by making the day doing charity and feel the magical love. S. SHERWIN ANSLY V D I N T E R N A T I O N A L L I T E R A C Y D A Y Literacy is a bridge from misery to hope. - Kofi Annan International Literacy Day is celebrated each year on 08 September, since It was declared by UNESCO on 26 October World Literacy Day plays a vital role in reminding people about the importance of literacy in societies, communities and individuals. It aims to highlight the necessary requirements to build more literate societies around the world. We need literacy in order to engage with the written word in everyday life. Being able to read and write means being able to keep up with current events, communicate effectively and understand the issues that are shaping our world. India currently has the largest population of illiterate adults in the world with 287 million. This is 37% of the global total. We should utilise each opportunity that we get to improve the literacy rate of our country. The beautiful thing about learning is that no one can take it away from you. R. AMAL RAJ - VII A

T U T E E S ' C O R N E R I N T E R N A T I O N A L D A Y O F D E M O C R A C Y Man s capacity for justice makes democracy possible, but man s inclination to injustice makes democracy necessary. Reinhold Niebhur International Day of Democracy is celebrated each year around the world on 15 September. It was established through a resolution passed by the UN General Assembly in 2007, encouraging governments to strengthen and consolidate democracy. National Parliaments are invited to organise their own democracy-related activities on that day to highlight the role of parliament as the cornerstone of democracy. The day was first observed in 2008, when hundreds of events were held worldwide. The importance of democracy for the 2030, agenda for sustainable development, strengthening the voices of citizens, accountability and political tolerance were some of the themes over the years. However, in recent years this political system seems to be undergoing one of its greatest challenges. The International Day of Democracy provides an opportunity to review the state of democracy in the world. Democracy refers to a government ruled by the people through representatives that have been elected by the whole population from among themselves. Only four countries in the world do not claim to be ruled by democracy. However, more than hundred other countries have democratic or partially democratic governments; these countries are home to more than half of the world's population. Democracy provides the natural environment for the protection and effective realization of human rights. This day helps people around the world to learn and review democracy. S. ROSELIN BLESSY - X B

T U T E E S ' C O R N E R I N T E R N A T I O N A L D A Y O F P E A C E When the power of love overcomes the love of power the world will know peace. - Jimi Hendrix Peace means freedom. Peace means a feeling of comfort and freedom from war. War is a terrible evil. The after effects of war can be felt even now like the Hiroshima bombing. The survivors would face difficult diseases like cancer as the side effects from the radiation. Once Gandhiji said, An eye for an eye will only make the whole world blind. Many people argue that war is the only process of solving disputes. But, in reality, war happens only because, people are not ready to settle disputes in a peaceful manner. Peace is necessary for the existence of this world. Some countries have invented dangerous weapons. If no restrictions are imposed on them, the world, as we know it now, would be totally wiped out. International Day of Peace is observed around the world on 21 September, as established in 1981 by UN General Assembly, to commemorate and strengthen the ideals of peace among nations. The most common way to commemorate the day is by observing a moment of silence. The true meaning of the day lies in the participation of people around the world to think about the meaning of peace and their commitment to its realization. Dark cannot drive out darkness only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate only love can do that. S. DHIVYA SHREE VIII C

T U T E E S ' C O R N E R INTERNATIONAL DAY OF AWARENESS OF FOOD LOSS AND WASTE REDUCTION Throwing away food is like stealing from the table of those who are poor and hungry. - Pope Francis International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste Reduction is observed globally on 29 September. The theme of observing this day is Stop food loss and waste - For the people, For the planet. The main objective of this day is to achieve Zero hunger and Zero waste. In the most recent years, food waste has become a complex phenomenon attracting the attention of scientists and consumers. Do you know how much food is wasted a year in the world? One-third of the food produced in the world goes waste, which is about 17% (1.3 billion tonnes) of total global food production. The COVID-19 pandemic continues to generate significant challenges to food security in many countries. Numerous people undergo untold hardships to find food. Mahatma Gandhi said, There are people in the world so hungry that God cannot appear to them except in the form of bread. So, buy food with a thought, cook it with care, serve just enough, save what will keep, don t waste the food. D. PRISCILLA IX A

t r i b u t e t o t h e f a t h e r o f o u r n a t i o n The greatness of humanity is not in being human, but in being humane. -Mahatma Gandhi Gandhi Jayanti is celebrated on 02 October every year to mark the birth anniversary of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, who is fondly called Mahatma. He is also called the Father of our Nation. His method of nonviolence inspired many civil rights movements across the world. To celebrate his contributions to the nation, 02 October is celebrated every year as a national holiday. The day has also been declared as the International Day of Non-Violence by the UN General Assembly in his honour. Gandhiji always believed that education is the most powerful weapon in the world for the new generation to achieve better fundamental rights. Freedom was the very breath of Gandhiji. He worked for the unity of nation and played a pivotal role in the alleviation of untouchability. He believed that education is essential for women to be self-reliant and to realize their deprived socio-political power. He was in favour of providing education to women as it would result in addressing the glaring inequalities in the society. "My religion is based on truth and non-violence. Truth is my God. Nonviolence is the means of realizing Him. This autobiographical note stands a testimonial to Gandhiji's strong belief in non-violence. He used these as social and political weapons to fight against all evils and injustice in the society. Gandhiji viewed Truth and Non-violence as two sides of a coin that can help a person to be pious, sympathetic, and co-operative. Gandhiji not only theorized but also practised Truth and Non-violence with unparalleled zeal. On Gandhi Jayanti, let us pay our tributes to this great leader of nonviolence and take the lead in creating better polity in India, to build a new world order based on truth and non-violence! S.
