3 CONGRATULATIONS YOU HAVE JUST REGISTERED A.DK DOMAIN NAME With your.dk domain name, you have secured a spot on the Danish part of the Internet. And you are now a customer of DK Hostmaster, administrator of close to 1.3 million Danish domain names. Having a.dk domain name does not require a lot from you, but there are a few things you should know. On the following pages, you will find useful information both about your.dk domain name and about us at DK Hostmaster. WHO IS DK HOSTMASTER? We are a Danish public limited company, and we have administered all.dk domain names since We started out with a staff of 2.5 to administer 100,000 domain names and have grown to a staff of 35, handling more than one million.dk domain names and serving just over 750,000 unique customers. We are not here to line the pockets of our shareholders. On behalf of the Danish Internet community, our owner DIFO (Danish Internet Forum) guarantees secure, fair and cheap access to the Internet. Our only tasks are to: administer the large data volumes and many customers, ensure daily operational stability of the Danish part of the Internet, operate as a cost-neutral business, make it simple and easy for you to be a customer with us. WHAT ARE YOU PAYING FOR? We register all contact information associated with the domain name, and make sure that the domain name is unique. We create domain names once every hour 24 hours a day. We point your domain name to the Internet service provider of your choice typically where you ordered your domain name. If you have an agreement with the Internet service provider on the technical aspects, you can use your domain name for your s or for setting up a website. We are only responsible for administering your domain name. If you have technical problems or need assistance with your website or in relation to navigating the Internet, please contact your Internet service provider. 3

At you can find answers to many of the questions that may pop up in relation to your domain name 24/7. You can also log on to our Self-service pages to modify or update your data and agreements with us directly. You are first introduced to our self-service facilities when your user data are validated. When your name and address can be validated in relation to the CPR or CVR registers, you need to confirm and activate your new domain name. As soon as you have validated your data and received your order confirmation, you can log on to activate your new domain name. But that is just one of many options available to you. At no charge, you can find user data about.dk domain names in our Whois database whether you are looking for information about a specific domain name or just want to check whether the domain name is available, change your payment period to 2, 3 or 5 years. If you opt for 5, you only pay for 4, 4

5 update your contact information, transfer the domain name, register payments for PBS (direct debit), change provider (redelegate your domain name when you change Internet service provider), merge several user IDs into one. Security is crucial to you and to us. Today, a domain name is an important and essential tool in the daily activities of many people. They use their domain name and a website to get in touch with their audiences/customers/readers and service them, each in their own way. At DK Hostmaster, security is a top priority in more ways than one. We protect your information, and you can find our data privacy policy here. Our operational stability is so high that, so far, we have never experienced that the Danish part of the Internet has been out of operation at any time. You will probably notice our security features when you log on to our Self-service pages. To do so, you need to enter both your user ID and your password. Your user ID and password are the keys to your domain name, so you should store them in a safe place. WHICH RULES APPLY? The registration of your.dk domain name is subject to the following: DK Hostmaster s terms and conditions, our General Conditions, DK Hostmaster s data privacy policy. You can find the latest and most current versions of these rules at 5

6 WHO DOES WHAT? As you will see from your order confirmation, there are three relevant functions in relation to your.dk domain name: the registrant, the proxy and the payer (billing contact). The registrant has concluded the domain name agreement with DK Hostmaster, and thus has the right to use the domain name. The proxy is the person or business authorised by the registrant to make decisions on its behalf. However, the registrant must still approve several of the actions the proxy can initiate on behalf of the registrant. The payer (billing contact) is responsible for payment. All three functions can be assumed by the registrant. However, some may find it convenient to delegate the functions. The delegation could be as follows: the holder of the domain name is the registrant, an employee from the IT department or a webhotel is the proxy, while an employee from the accounts department is responsible for payment. Watch the video Get Started, which also explains the functions. WHAT ABOUT ANONYMITY? In Denmark, we want as much transparency as possible in relation to a given.dk domain name. Therefore as stipulated in the Danish Act on Internet Domains (lov om internetdomæner) DK Hostmaster provides free access to a database of information about the vast number of domain names. This means that anyone who wants information about a.dk domain name can look it up on our website through the service Find.dk domain name. By default, all your information is publicly available when you register a.dk domain name. However, as a registrant, you may be anonymous if your name and address are protected in the CPR register in your municipality of residence. If you have an unlisted or ex-directory telephone number with your telephone provider, you may request that your telephone number also be hidden in our database. A proxy cannot be anonymous unless the proxy is the registrant of its own domain name and its name and address are protected in the CPR register. Businesses and associations have no right to anonymity either. The payer (billing contact) is always anonymous. Note! To protect you and our other customers from unwanted spam, we have chosen to hide your addresses in the publicly available database. 6

7 WHY DO I RECEIVE MORE THAN ONE CODE? When you have registered a.dk domain name, you will receive two codes: a user ID and a temporary password. On your first visit to our Self-service, you need to change the temporary password. Subsequently, you must treat your user ID and password as you would a Dankort (payment card) and its PIN. The reason is that your user ID and password provide direct access to your domain name in DK Hostmaster s Self-service. WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR UPDATING THE INFORMATION? You are responsible for ensuring that we always have updated information on you and your domain name. As long as your information is correct in the CPR or CVR register, and your information has been validated, we automatically have the correct information. However, it is still your responsibility to update your address and telephone number. It is important that we have your correct contact information. Unless you have requested otherwise, we will your invoice to you, and if we do not have your correct address, this could ultimately mean that your domain name is deleted because you do not receive and pay your invoice. HOW AND WHEN DO I PAY? If you have registered your domain name for a one-year period, we will contact you once a year when it is time to renew your registration. If you have registered your domain name for 2-, 3- or 5-year periods, there will obviously be longer intervals between our invoices to you. Unless you have requested a hardcopy invoice, we will the invoice to you. If you forget to pay for the renewal, we will send you a final reminder in hardcopy. If you do not respond by the deadline stated, we will suspend your domain name. This means that it is no longer possible to connect to your domain name and that your address will not work, and your website cannot be accessed. If we have not received your payment within three months, we will delete your domain name. If you delay payment until your domain name has been suspended, we will charge a restoration fee. 7

8 HOW DO WE GET AN ELECTRONIC INVOICE WHEN WE ARE A PUBLIC CORPORATION? If your public corporation wants to receive electronic invoices, we need you to provide us with the EAN location number of the corporation. You can do so via our Self-service. Please specify the EAN location number along with the other contact information. Subsequently, we will you the invoice through VANS in the OIOXML format. Note! Pursuant to section 1(3) of the Danish Act on Public Payments, etc. (lov om offentlige betalinger m.v.), we do not accept payment through Nemkonto. Payment can be made only through PBS (direct debit) or the FIK line (joint inpayment form) of the invoice. WHO HAS THE BEST CLAIM ON THE DOMAIN NAME? This is a frequently asked question, but since we only register and administer domain names without assessing the intended purposes or rights, we have to pass on this question. We refer the question to the independent Complaints Board for Domain Names. The Board decides any disputes concerning a given domain name in relation to trademark rights, or rights to names or distinctive marks. For further information about the Complaints Board for Domain Names, see WHY ARE DOMAIN NAMES SUSPENDED? DIFO (Danish Internet Forum) and DK Hostmaster currently have four intervention options in case of requests for suspension of a.dk domain name. These are cases involving: manifest risk of confusion, significant security risks or other considerations, typosquatting, i.e. deceptive domain names where visitors are directed to their websites because Internet users mistype an already existing domain name. repeated violations of good domain name practice. A number of specific requirements govern when and how DIFO and DK Hostmaster may apply the four suspension rules. Read about these rules in our terms and conditions, our General Conditions. NOT FOR KEEPS Under the Danish Act on Internet Domains, all.dk domain names are the property of the Danish government. DK Hostmaster administers Danish domain names on behalf of DIFO (Danish Internet Forum). Domain names cannot be purchased they are borrowed. When you register your.dk domain name, you acquire the right to use it. 8

9 CONCEPTS AND EXPLANATIONS DIFO (Danish Internet Forum): An association that acts on behalf of the Danish Internet community, across political and business interests. Its members are representatives of professional and private users and providers. Through DK Hostmaster, DIFO administers all Danish domain names. DNS (Domain Name System): The Internet uses two types of names: a DNS name and an IP address. DNS names are aimed at users and based on domain names that make sense to most people. The computer s IP address, on the other hand, consists of numbers that are difficult to remember. Name server: The technical pathfinder and pointer that sends you to the right location when you enter a given Internet address. Transfer: When a registrant transfers the right to use a domain name to someone else. Redelegation: Change of Internet service provider. VID service: Very Important Domain. A service that provides enhanced security in relation to payments to DK Hostmaster by extending the deadline before a domain name is suspended. 9
