4 FESTIVAL MISSION The Albuquerque Folk Festival provides an opportunity for the public to experience and participate in folk music, song, dance, storytelling, and crafts through educational workshops, demonstrations, and performances. Folk activities enhance community expression and the continuance of cultural traditions. THE FOLK ETHIC The Albuquerque Folk Festival is devoted to the Folk Ethic and is focused on self-expression, community, friendship, and social consciousness. It is non-commercial. It embraces the arts with an emphasis on participation rather than virtuoso talent. Enjoyment is discovered through personal involvement rather than fame through performance and recording. Those who are skillful at an activity are willing to teach beginners, for they were once beginners themselves who learned from others willing to help without cost. Following the Folk Ethic demonstrates that enriching others through sharing folk activities and resources is the greatest form of self-expression. AFF AND THE PANDEMIC When the Covid pandemic broke out in early 2020 the Albuquerque Folk Festival had just enough time in in the spring to figure out this Zoom thing and do a virtual folk festival online that June. Board members collaborated to learn and then share the ways to present live music online, including concerts, workshops and sing-alongs. Surely, we thought, we would be back normal the following year, but that s not how it panned out. So we did a hybrid, in-person, online festival in June and continued to plan for our regular live festival this fall. Given virus mutation and vaccination resistance, we re not quite back to normal, but we re doing our best to put on a safe and fun ABQ FOLK FEST. We can t just stop doing all the things we love to do together; we re just going to have to do them in a more deliberate and careful way. We ve moved most of the festival outdoors, we re requiring proof of vaccination or negative Covid test results from all attendees, and we re requiring masks indoors. Thank you so much for cooperating with these requirements and for coming out to the festival today! Like other events and businesses, we have been affected by these changes: We have more work, are short staffed and have had to cut some programming. We ask for your understanding and patience with our wonderful volunteers who are doing their best. Steve will open it up to a round robin sing, so bring a musical instrument and your favorite working cowboy song! 2:30p Keys to Dynamic Solo Stage Performance (Oscar Butler) Singing, speaking, or selling, learn tricks and tips to have a natural stage presence. Take to any stage without fear and capture your audience s ears, hearts, and trust. Learn how to make your performance rewarding for both you and your audience. There will be workshop participation. Workshop Tent :30a Songs of the Sea as Metaphor and Place (Ed Trikett) Join us as we sing songs and work shanties describing different images of the sea, the lives of sailors, of traveling and being away from home as a way of life. We ll consider such metaphors as the sea as the great beyond ( crossing the bar ), etc. 12:30p Introduction to Mountain Dulcimer (B) (Irma Reeder) Also known as the Appalachian Dulcimer, this instrument is one of the easiest to get started on! We ll learn some basics and have you playing some traditional songs in no time! You ll also see different types of dulcimers and hear some non-traditional ways of playing. There will be some loaners available for participants. Irma is a Winfield finalist and co-founded the annual New Mexico Dulcimer Festival. 1:30p Strings and Winds from the South American Highlands and Brazil (Baracutanga) In this demonstration, Baracutanga will aid curious audiences in their exploration of the enchanting instruments and rhythms found in the Andes, Brazil, Colombia, and Venezuela. They will play traditional songs and rhythms that they ll break apart into how each instrument in the ensemble plays its role. Audience members that desire to participate in the interactive nature of the presentation are invited to bring their own drums, shakers, South American wind instruments, or just bring themselves to clap and dance! 2:30p Learning Dust Devil on the Fiddle (Eli Wrankle) Eli Wrankle of 3hattrio will guide aspiring fiddlers in learning the 3hattrio tune, Dust Devil. He will also, show off his pedal board so that when people hear 3hattrio in concert they will be able to identify music that sounds like meteor showers, far off mirage, or other sounds of the desert. 3:30p A washboard isn t just for doing laundry ( Julie King) A Washboard in a Band? If you thought washboards were no longer useful and intended to hang on your kitchen wall, come to my washboard workshop to learn and hear more. A washboard has become a cool percussion instrument and can often be heard keeping the beat in roots based music. I ll share some washboard history and will have some on hand to pass around for participants to see, hear, and play. I ll demonstrate the techniques I use and will have my husband play guitar as I (and you, too!) play along. Question and answer period to follow. Workshop Tent :30a It s an Autoharp! (B) (Michele Spiro) An Autoharp workshop for newbies and the curious. Do I stand or sit? How many picks do I need? How do I strum? What s a color chord? What s the difference between a diatonic and a chromatic? And how the heck do you hold this thing? Find out the answers to these questions and more in this easy, relaxed Autoharp workshop. In this workshop, we will explore the Autoharp, check out easy ways of creating lead sheets, play and perhaps even sing along. 25

15 Workshop Tent 3 (Continued) Some loaners will be available, but bring an Autoharp if you have one or you can borrow one. 11:30a Arranging for an Ensemble (Stillhouse Junkies) This workshop will focus on the Band s approach to arranging music, and how to integrate interesting arrangements for bands and ensembles. 12:30p Calico Tunes (Virginia Creepers) Calico tunes use a special cross-tuning in the key of A to produce a unique sound, old and archaic. We ll play a few Calico tunes, encouraging participating fiddlers to join in the AEAC# tuning. It s possible to play these tunes in standard or cross-a tuning, but you lose that haunting sound. Other instruments are welcome, too! (No special tuning necessary.) 1:30p Flatpicking Guitar (I) (Pat Neff ) Beginning fingerstyle guitar--broken chords and other topics. Bring your guitar and learn fingerstyle arpeggio patterns to enhance your playing. 2:30p Jaw Harp (B) (Kenneth Dean) Symphony musician Ken Dean will go over basic techniques for this ancient mouth-resonated instrument. Feel free to bring your own instruments. There will be a limited number of instruments available for $6.00 each at the workshop. 3:30p Rockabilly Guitar for Beginners ( Julian Dossett) This will be an intro course running over the roots of Rock n Roll. We ll learn the notes to a simple tune, then the rhythm to go along with it. All skill levels are welcome, and other stringed instruments can also join in. 1:30p Intro to Traditional Irish Fiddle (Eileen Sullivan) In this introductory workshop, you will learn a lively tune or two and be introduced to style, rhythm and ornamentation in Irish music. 2:30p Bodhrán Accompaniment to Irish Traditional Music (Dain Forsythe) We ll learn basic and intermediate rhythmic techniques for accompanying different instruments and styles of melodic play. Some of the questions we ll answer are: How do we hold the drum and tipper for accurate execution? What s a good beginner bodhrán? Is there a best sized drum? What techniques create differences in tone, timbre, and volume on the bodhrán? Why do most accompanists join in after the tune has already started? How do accompanists know when to join in on a set of tunes? What are some of the best choices for accompanying fiddlers? Is it different for button box players? What makes those choices the best choices? 3:30p Interpreting the West through Music (Hal Cannon) Hal Cannon is both a folklorist and a musical innovator. He has always been interested in place based music. In this workshop he will share some of his favorite traditional western music of the 19th century and also demonstrate new music which interprets the West in new ways. Workshop Tent :30a Celtic Singers (Michele Buchanan) Celtic Singers of NM is a group devoted to preserving the history and music of Celtic lands. At our sing-a-long session you will be invited to sing phonetically in Irish Gaelic, Scottish Gaidhlig, Broad Scots, and perhaps a song in Welsh or Manx. And if you are game, we invite you to participate in waulking the cloth, the ancient method of making the length of woven wool dye-fast and waterproof. Lyrics to songs will be provided, as well as history and meaning of the songs we sing. Will you take the high road or the low? 11:30a Celtic Mandolin Technique (Louis Scuderi) Interested in getting into Celtic music on your mandolin or bringing your playing to the next level?
