1 Image Editing Preserving Family Memories Matt Reilly April 24, 2021 OTOW Computer Club

2 Today s Goals Provide overview of image editing, using PhotoShop Elements (PSE) as example. Explain terms and technology common to most editing software. Give many examples of how PSE may improve your family images. Prepare you to decide whether to learn more about PSE or other editing software. Point to tutorial sources for more information.

3 Review from Past Sessions Digital images are made of pixels. Originally a grayscale pixel had a value from 0 to 255 (1 byte has 8 bits, i.e. 256 values). Colored pixels can represent red, green, or blue. Each colored pixel had a value from 0 to 255. Today, pixels can use more than 8 bits. Modern software uses up to 16 bits per color.

4 Bar Graphs or Histograms Bar graphs are commonly used to explain numbers. Club survey used bar graphs to show results. Bar graphs also give useful info about images. Count the number of pixels with each value.

5 Image Histograms Provide visual indicator of image exposure Longer exposure yields pixels with high values. Dark image has high pixel count on left side of graph. Light image has high pixel counts on right side.

Color Image Histograms Use 3 graphs (RGB) for colored pixels. Term channel refers to a single color. The composite graph shows the total value for all three channels.

6 Color Image Histograms Use 3 graphs (RGB) for colored pixels. Term channel refers to a single color. The composite graph shows the total value for all three channels. Editing software shows one channel at a time or the composite. The histograms shown suggest a image with mostly shadows and few highlights. Term Levels often refers to distribution of pixels.

8 Adjust Levels to Lighten Image Histogram shows mostly dark shadows. Note Auto button Click Auto to see changes suggested by Elements

9 Adjust Levels Automatically Auto made little change. Why? Often Auto works well. Sometimes human eye is better.

10 Back to Before Image Move sliders under graph to lighten shadows darken highlights, or change midtones Results are immediately seen.

12 Restore Faded Image Histogram shows mostly faint highlights. Click on Auto button to see changes suggested by Elements

13 Auto Restore Results Histogram shows pixels spread out over all values. Begins to look like drawing. PSE cannot add back faded dyes.

14 Power of Levels Control Element s Levels control can do much more than lighten dark images or restore faint ones. You can achieve the dream of ancient alchemists! 16 2 nd Look at Levels Controls Levels tool changes whole image. Need to change only selected areas.

17 Selection Tools Elements has a large box of selection tools. Select by shape, color, contrast, and more. Combine or subtract two selections. Let s look at few examples of selection tools. Begin with a short clip from the book How to Cheat in PhotoShop Elements 8 by David Asch and Steve Caplin. You will learn how to create a dramatic sky.

20 Concept of Layers You have seen some of the power of histograms and levels Let s move on to another powerful tool Layers, the overall image is constructed from a stack of separate images Each individual layer can be edited separately change the opacity of a layer. blend two or more layers, copy or move layers, even to a different image.

21 Layers in Elements Image has 7 layers: Background copy (hidden), on top of Red heart, above Yellow sun, above Green clover, above Black cat, above Paw prints, above Background

22 Simple Example of Layers Let s look at another clip from the book How to Cheat in PhotoShop Elements 8 by David Asch and Steve Caplin. The clip starts with 3 layers, which show 3 Shelves 1 Plate Background Watch how they can be moved, combined, and duplicated! How many layers do we end with?

24 Selection by Hue Next example shows how Elements can select all parts of an image with a similar hue. Selected segments can be separate from one another. This short clip is also from the book How to Cheat in PhotoShop Elements 8 by David Asch and Steve Caplin. You will see how to repaint your automobile without fuss or fumes.

26 Healing Brushes Sometimes images contain unattractive defects. Elements provides tools to repair the image. Several types of healing brushes are demonstrated by David Asch and Steve Caplin. You don t need a dermatologist to improve your complexion and appearance.
