2 Our Inspiration For over 0 years, the Lake District has inspired us to create our unique and world class products. The dynamic landscape of rolling fells and towering peaks has provided the backdrop for generations of artists, writers and poets from Thomas Gray to Coleridge and Wordsworth, Ruskin and Heingway. Our Heritage The discovery of graphite in the Borrowdale Valley and the birth of pencil making in Keswick are a heritage of which we are rightly proud. The Cumberland Pencil Company created its first pencil in 2 and the first Derwent fine art colour pencil was introduced in 9. Our Pencil Museum still stands on the site of our original factory in Keswick. We continue to evolve and improve not only our traditional pencils but also to introduce new innovative products to enhance our customers experience and artistic opportunities. Our Environment We have reduced our energy consumption, recycle our sawdust and use sustainable resources wherever possible. We have been awarded the Queen s Award for Enterprise for our unique solvent-free paint application system which has greatly improved the air quality. The business is also ISO 900 accredited. 9 Vivien Blackburn Caroline Bletsis Dazzlingly brilliant Derwent Inktense Pencils are our best water-soluble pencil ever! You can use them dry but mix them with water and WOW! the colour turns into vibrant ink. Once it s dry the colour is fixed and you can work over the top of it, and, because of its permanent feature it s great for using on fabric such as silk and cotton! (You must make sure that all the pigment has been dissolved in the water to make it permanent. Any dry pigment will be washed out if further water is applied.) Once I had got to grips with the bright colours and permanence of Inktense pencils, they quickly became one of my favourite mediums. I love their versatility, clarity of colour and that they can be painted over many times without ever becoming muddy, unlike watercolours. 9

11 Soraya French Glyn Macey, Flamboyant, vibrant colour All the brilliance of our Inktense Pencils but in a chunky block making it easy to cover large areas really quickly. Just like the pencils you can use the blocks dry but they come into their own when you mix them with water and the colour turns into vibrant ink. Once dry the colour is permanent and you can work over the top of it. Also ideal for using on silk and cotton! Inktense offers a fabulous range of colours from vivid and brilliant to neutral and some very useful muted tones. I love the convenience of taking a few sticks for outdoor sketching with a brush pen as well as using the whole range in the studio. I drip, drizzle, spray and use them every which way to create some vibrant paintings. The permanency of the colours allows for layering of washes without muddiness. 15 Vivien Blackburn Colour that flows Caroline Bletsis Great to use and you can mix them with water to create interesting colour flows. They re not as bright as Inktense so they re ideal if you like to do more subtle paintings. Of course, you can use them dry and because they have such a soft texture you will find them easy to blend and layer. Watercolour is not permanent like Inktense, so once the colour is dry you can re-wet it and move it about again. I was pleasantly surprised at the depth of colour that can be achieved with these pencils. A lot of my paintings involve dark darks and bright colours, both of which I found easily possible, with the added bonus of accuracy from a sharp pencil when drawing.

Perfect for all sorts of art and craft projects these highly reflective colours really pop when you use them on a black background. They re water-soluble too so you can have great fun experimenting with interesting wash effects. I find Metallic Pencils are best used on black paper, this makes them really pop. 19 Vivien Blackburn Malcolm Cudmore Express yourself! With Derwent Artists Pencils you will be spoilt for choice! There are 20 colours in the range and their waxy texture makes them ideal for layering and blending so you can create as many of your own colours as you wish! They have a nice fat colour strip which is ideal if you want to create really expressive drawings but if you need something for finer, more detailed work, look no further than the Derwent Studio range. I build up tone and colour with a lot of cross-hatching and like to work on fairly smooth surfaces. I like the individual colours and marks that I use to be evident in the finished work and, with these pencils, I feel I have a great deal of control over how much colour is put down at any time. Derwent Artists pencils are perfect for me - the range of colours is superb, the barrels are a good size and very comfortable for sustained use - especially as my work can take some time to complete! 9

21 Irina Garmashova Irina Garmashova Beautifully refined Want to get stuck into the detail? Then Derwent Studio pencils are just the range for you! You will find they have the same colour strip as the Derwent Artists range but are a lot finer, perfect for more detailed work, particularly illustrations. The barrel is hexagonal rather than round, so you can get a really good grip when getting down to the tricky bits! The hexagonal shape of Studio pencils make them easy to hold for complete control. I was able to produce thinner lines than with other Derwent pencils, and even with a thinner line, Derwent Studio maintains the same intensity of colour. The colours in the range blend together easily and help you reach any result you can imagine. 2

The wide colour strip is powdery and soft so mixing and blending is really easy and because it is encased in wood you get the pastel effect without the mess (if you can resist using your fingers to blend!)
