Mar Miclat at Engr. Jojo Panganiban. Jojo Mendoza at Rdo. P. Rodem Ramos. #UB OFFICIAL NEWSPAPER OF THE ARCHDIOCESE OF LIPA EDITORIAL STAFF Fr. Nonie C. Dolor Editor-in-Chief Jesusa D. Bauan Circulation Manager Fr. Most Rev. Ramón Argüelles, DD, STL TAIWAN Pilgrimage Can one go on Pilgrimage to a non-christian country? Can one say he is on pilgrimage in a land which ignores Jesus? The title of this sharing might provoke such question. Our predominantly (although largely nominally) Catholic country associates 'pilgrimages' and 'processions' with Catholic Christian practice. We associate it with the crosses ahead of a rosary praying crowd or statues of saints and candles as well as flower throwing children. But other religions have pilgrimages too as well as a variety of places of prayerful encounter. I have visited Buddhist temples in Thailand, Hongkong, Taiwan and Macau. I have gone to Hindu holy sites in India. I have entered several Mosques in Indonesia, Jerusalem and Malaysia. I sneaked in Jewish Synagogues and Cao Dai shrines in Vietnam. Of course wherever I go, the first thing I try to find is where Catholic Churches and Pilgrimage places are. In all these locations, Catholic or no, I always pray. I know the true God is also in those places where He is little known or not at all recognized. I go to those places of prayer to be with Him and to pray to Him for those who believe maybe quite imperfectly but who can be touched deep in their heart by my Saviour and God. In all those places, Catholic or otherwise, I know the Blessed Mother is with me bringing Her Son to all peoples She would like to make Herself known as their Mother. Such is my conviction when a group of us went to Taiwan. Mary was with us all along. She was the one who together with God planned all our encounters with the Taiwanese people. Everything happened so smoothly and bore so much spiritual fruits that no one among us ever imagined would happen. We can only say all the time that God has planned our journey with Him and Mama Mary and we are just too lucky to be part of this wonderful pilgrimage. After all one important element of a true pilgrimage is openness to the unexpected. God does many things without consulting us. He does not need to. He simply beckons us: "Come, and see" (John 1:39). We came, we saw and we believed He did all things well and He will still do. There were several priests with me: Fr. Oscar Andal (Archdiocesan Chancellor), Fr. Mike Samaniego (Archdiocesan Finance Officer), Msgr. Fred Madlangbayan (former Vicar General and still the Parish Priest of San Martin of Tours in Taal), Fr. Rodem Ramos (Parish Priest and Rector of Sta Teresita Shrine Parish) and Fr Egay Villostas (Laurel Parish Priest). The Mayor Randy James and Joan Amo of Laurel, Administrator Ciriaco and Pronie Calinisan came too. Msgr Fred, Fr Rodem and Fr Egay with Laurel Mayor and Administrator, responded to my invitation to join me and see in the Sun Moon Lake what can be done to improve Taal Lake. Bro Rene Lantin, Bro. Ito Guinhawa and wife, Bro Henry Ocier (the chief organizer of the group), Kenneth and Zenith Chua, the Martin and Florentina Sy and their son, Joey, Rose Uy, Divina Sy, completed our pilgrimage team. In Taiwan the counterpart of Henry in the organization is also a Filipino Chinese, Dr. Francisco Lim and spouse. They made the pilgrimage a truly unforgettable encounter and grace-filled union with God and the Blessed Mother. It all started when some of us learned that the Diocese of Taichung joined the consecration the (arch)dioceses in the Philippines made to the Immaculate Heart of Mary on June 8, The CBCP decided to pray this consecration after the December 12, 2012, passing of the RH Bill into law. I, for one, knew that this would bring disaster to our country expected to be the model of fidelity to God and the Church in the entire planet. But we succumbed to the pressure of the world and the corrupt ways of the government. I am not sure whether all (arch)dioceses in the Philippines made the consecration of the Philippines to the Immaculate Heart. What is exhilarating is that Taichung in Taiwan uniquely aligned itself with us Filipinos in the Consecration asked by the Blessed Mother in Fatima. Because of this The Grupo da Imacolada from Portugal, which is headed by Henry Ocier in the Philippines, has become interested in the Taichung Marian commitment. Portugal also joined us in the spiritual event. Bishop Martin TZU was eager to be one with us in the special love of Mary. He almost never left us alone. One can see in his simple personality that he is loved by Mary. TINIG PASTOL... P. 5 Msgr. Fred Madlangbayan Straight from the Heart Bilang susog sa ating nakaraang ulat, na ang mga Laiko, sa pamamagitan ng binyag ay naging mga bahagi ng gawain at tungkuling PAGKAPARI, PAGKAPROPETA at PAGKAHARI NI KRISTO, sa larangan ng PAGKAPARI, Hence the Laity, dedicated us they are to Christ and anointed by the Holy Spirit, are marvelously called and prepared so that even richer fruits may be produced in them. For all their works, prayers and apostolic undertakings, family and married life, daily work, relaxation of mind and body, if they are accomplished in the spirit - indeed even the hardships of life if patiently borne - all these become spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. In the celebration of the Eucharist, these may most fittingly be offered to the Father along with the body of the Lord. As so, worshipping everywhere by their holy actions, the Laity consecrate the world itself to God, everywhere offering worship by the holiness of their lives. Isinasaad sa CCC. 903 na Lay people who possess the required qualities can be admitted permanently to the ministries of Lector and Acolyte. When the necessity of the church warrants it and when ministers are lacking, Lay persons, even if they are not Lectors and Acolytes, can also supply for certain of their offices, namely to exercise the ministry of the word, to preside over liturgical prayers and to distribute Holy Communion in accord with the prescriptions of law. (LG 35) Kaugnay nito, ipinahayag ni Sto. Tomas de Aquino na To teach in order to lead others to faith is the task of every preacher and of each believer.

Syanga Naman. 2. PWEDE NGA BANG PAP APAGHIW GHIWALA ALAYIN ANG MAG-ASA -ASAWA? A? He he he he. Syanga naman. 4. YEAR OF THE LAITY. 5. MICHAEL CHRISTIAN MARTINEZ. Very alarming na nga! Syanga Naman. #UB The Syanga Naman articles are published monthly at Ulat Batangan (Archdiocese of Lipa) and at The Filipino Catholic (New York, since 2002). 5 TINIG PASTOL... P. 4 He enjoys being with those he believes are close to Mary. Even the Bishop Emeritus, Msgr. Wong, was equally gracious and reveals still in spite of age th desire to see the triumph of God and Mary, even in China mainland where he was exiled from. We had a nice time together. Then there are so many Chinese Taiwanese, recent converts, whose faith stories put us to shame. I refer to James Liao, our guide, and his companion Alex. They have brought to the Church their closest relatives and friends. Seeing all these Taiwanese Chinese so serious in their faith, I am more convinced that the prophecy of St John Paul II is very true: The Good News will return to where it all started, Asia... the time for Asia has come. The Taiwanese, both Chinese and aborigines (there are several of them who gave us so much joy by their cultural presentation) are thirsty for God. I imagine the whole Asia is. AND THEY LOOK AT US FILIPINOS AS THEIR AS- SURANCE THAT THEY WILL SOON KNOW JESUS! That they, like us, will be sons and daughters of Mary. That we can assure them that Mary is also their Mother. They were astonished by my story that in the Archdiocese of Lipa, we have three Marian images connected somehow with the Chinese people and all Asians which challenges Catholic Philippines to take seriously the missionary challenge. The first is the four hundred eleven year old image of Our Lady of Caysasay. It is highly probable that it is the image of a Chinese goddess introduced to the place long before Christianity reached Philippine soil. The image was fished from the Pansipit River that connects China Sea and Taal Lake, which was a perfect enclave for ships against destructive elements. The Spanish missionaries identified the image as that of the Immaculate Conception and has always been revered by the natives of Taal as such for the last more than four centuries. In recent decades Chinese people, including non-christians make pilgrimages to Labac, Taal bringing the image of MaTso with them. They say that their MaTso, goddess of goodness and generosity, protector of seafarers, told them to go to Labac and pray with the people because she is the one venerated there. Is it possible that Mary is MaTso who like Our Lady of Guadalupe in the Americas can say: I am not a goddess, but I am greater than all your gods and goddesses because I am the Mother of God. Asia and China is ripe for the revelation of Tien Mu (Mother of God) and Her Son Who is God. The second most revered image in Batangas I say is the Mediatrix of All Grace. Many say tht in 1948 Her message was 'PRAY FOR THE CONVERSION OF CHINA!' Mary pleaded in Fatima: 'Pray for the conversion of Russia'. She implied that Russia would dominate a big part of the world and if people did not pray and Russia was not converted, it would spread its errors. Is China now a threat to the world? Does it not really make sense that we should pray for her conversion? In Montemaria the huge statue of Mary, Mother of All Asia, is being erected. The head and arms are long ready to be installed. What is awaited is the body being made in China. The Blessed Mother will face the China Sea and the nations of Asia, in the gesture of beckoning them to come to Her Son. The Montemaria pilgrims will be asked to pray for the evangelization of China and All Asia. After blessing the SUN MOON Lake and saying Mass at the island where the monument of the Immaculate Heart was erected and crowned, we entrusted our group to the Blessed Mother so that She can continue to guide us to be with Her bearers of the Good News to All Asia. The next day we concluded our Taiwan Pilgrimage with a Mass at the Catholic Sanctuary of WuFongci where in the 1980s the Blessed Mother saved from peril a group of Buddhist government workers and mountain climbers. They eventually converted to Catholicism and erected the shrine. We marveled at what God is doing to Taiwan through the Blessed Mother and how we have been given a taste of missionary success in our pilgrimage. We know that God will still involve many others in His dream to manifest Himself to the Asian peoples. My prayer and the prayer of our group is that all Filipinos, Filipino Chinese and Catholics in our Asian Continent will have the chance to make a pilgrimage like what we had in Taiwan. The whole of Asia needs missionary Pilgrims to accompany Jesus, the Good News, and Mary the Star of Third Millennium Evangelization to tell all Asians that the Lord is in and from this continent. The time has come for Him to be recognized now by this great continent. Our Taiwan Pilgrimage is unforgettable because the wonders God does for us makes us even more convinced our Pilgrimage must be over all of Asia. Taiwan is just the beginning. #UB
