19 Pueblo City-County Library District New Mexico Genealogy Collection Rawlings Library - 3 rd Floor The New Mexico Collection at the Rawlings Library focuses on genealogy from Northern New Mexico and Southern Colorado starting in The collection includes the Deligencias Matrimoniales (Roots) compiled by Fray Angelico Chavez which are the New Mexico pre-nuptial investigations of the archives of the Archdiocese of Santa Fe between 1678 and The collection also has birth, marriage, death, census, cemetery, and military records published by several publishing houses that focus only on New Mexico genealogy. Some examples of these publishers are the Hispanic Genealogy Research Center in Albuquerque (HGRC), Genealogical Society of Hispanic America (GSHA), New Mexico Genealogical Society (NMGS), Colorado Society of Hispanic Genealogy (CSHS), Albuquerque Genealogical Society (AGS), and the Olibama Lopez Tushar Hispanic Research Center in Denver (OLTHLRC). In addition, this collection contains film on the Spanish, Mexican, and territorial archives of New Mexico. We also have periodicals, biographies, historical research books, and several family histories including, Archuleta, Cordova, Pacheco, Lucero, Baca, Martinez, Quintana, Vigil, Duran, Alarid and many others. Genealogy is the study of family ancestry and has its own methodology and best practices. However, each ethnic group that makes up the world contributes different traditions, cultures, religions and records. When researching specific peoples it is important to understand the many differences and similarities that exist. Record keeping varies from ethnic group to ethnic group as well as from place to place. Consulting the correct resources on the group of interest will save the researcher much time and frustration. Genealogists focusing on Hispanic and Mexican American genealogy will have many special resources available at the Rawlings Library of the Pueblo City-County Library District due to the efforts of local and state genealogical societies. The primary focus of this collection is to provide materials that relate to Pueblo citizens. Consequently, most of the materials focus on Hispanic or Mexican American genealogy rather than international research. 21 st Century Researching The internet has made great advances in genealogy research. The library has over 40 websites that patrons can use from home that are genealogy related. At least six of these websites focus on Hispanic genealogy and the others are good finding aides and guides for general genealogy, rules and methodology. We have a subscription to Heritage Quest that you can use from home for census information. We also have a subscription to aancestry.com that is available for free in the library or you can connect your personal computer to this website within the library buildings including the branches. These are excellent resources for all vital statistics, census data, and other matters pertaining to genealogy research. The website address is Click on Resource Centers and then Genealogy Resources. Furthermore, the genealogy world is now advancing from the paper trail to the DNA trail. While some genealogists still follow all written records available, many genealogists are going one step further in testing their DNA.
