Terms and conditions apply, available on request or from Our Service Anyone who does a job of work is dependant upon their hands. Your employee s hands are the only area of the body that are actively put into or near high risk areas. You need to prevent risks, provide adequate protection and keep them safe. In the workplace a person s hands are the most vulnerable part of their body. In 2010/11 there were a reported 33,290 over three day absence from work incidents reported, of this number 2,987 were hand injuries where hands were injured through cuts from sharp/coarse material or equipment or from trapped fingers.* As part of our commitment to safety this Expert Guide is designed to help you to ensure that you are specifying the correct hand protection. Arco lead the way in hand protection, offering the biggest, most comprehensive range of hand protection on the market, this Expert Guide will provide you with an overview of legislation and risks and will assist you in the selection of the most appropriate gloves. Even though there is an understanding in the workforce that hand protection needs to be worn, there is often a reluctance to wear gloves. Gloves are sometimes perceived as being restrictive. Arco specialise in making glove wearing a straightforward process. We use the most ergonomic shapes, the most modern, technical fabrics and coatings, and offer the best specialist brands available. We help our customers to improve wearer compliance, we can produce posters which promote the importance of wearing gloves, the protection and benefits they offer and explain the reasons for their necessity. Hand Protection Audits Handling injuries were the number one cause of time off injuries in 2013 (RIDDOR). To help reduce the risk of handling injuries to your employees it is important that the current types of glove are being used. If you require support regarding glove use on your site, this may be validation of the current gloves in use, recommendations for new processes or just help with cost down initiatives. We have a Technical Specialist for gloves available to assist you. They can assess your site specific needs and recommend the most suitable hand protection. 3 Arco Quality and Product Assurance Our mission is to influence industry standards and to develop, source and supply the highest quality products. Our customers tell us that product quality is one of the most important factors of our service to them, they want to feel totally assured that the products we supply them will keep their people safe. With our core purpose to keep people safe at work we are committed delivering high quality, safe and reliable products which meet or exceed our customers expectations. To demonstrate this we have invested heavily and are now the first safety distributor to have our own, in house, independently accredited Product Assurance Laboratory. We are now taking the lead, and aim to drive improvements in quality standards across the industry. We will test products to recognised standards, and beyond. Where we think that accepted practices and standards can be improved, we will challenge them and influence change. Independent accreditation Our Product Assurance laboratory aims to provide our customers with a level of confidence which is second to none in our industry. It is important to us to demonstrate expertise and independence and therefore we have had our laboratory independently accredited by SATRA, the world s leading authority on international legislation and testing. We are accredited for a range of safety footwear, protective glove and high visibility clothing test methods. Gloves Testing The new Arco Product Assurance laboratory contains a range of test equipment to allow tests to be carried out for the mechanical testing of gloves to the requirements of EN 388:2003, Protective gloves against mechanical risks. Tests can be conducted to measure a glove s resistance to abrasion, blade cuts, tear and puncture. Where necessary it is possible to measure cut resistance beyond EN 388 cut level 5 to International ISO Standard ISO EN 388:2003 Protective gloves against mechanical risks. Resistance to Abrasion EN Resistance to abrasion The Martindale Abrasion Tester is used to test the abrasion resistance of all types of material used for protective gloves in accordance with EN 388. It is the internationally accepted test equipment for wear of fabrics, and it is also used for determining the susceptibility of fabrics to pilling. Samples are cut from the palms of gloves and are subjected to rubbing against glass paper until a sample wears and a hole appears. The performance of the sample is measured in the number of abrasion cycles before sample breakthrough. The Martindale Abrasion Tester can also be used to test the abrasion resistance of rubber gloves and plastic/rubber coated fabrics by substituting the standard abradant with a grit paper. Blade Cut Resistance When testing gloves to EN 388 cut resistance is divided into five levels, with level 5 offering the most and level 0 offering the least protection. The level is based on the Blade Cut Resistance Test which uses a rotating blade being drawn along fabric samples until cut-through occurs. However, where fabrics have a high resistance to cutting the blade can blunt during the test process and this can affect the results of the test. In such cases, an alternative method specified in EN ISO 13997:1999 using the Cut Resistance Evaluator is recommended. At the product Assurance laboratory we perform both tests. EN Blade cut resistance The Circular Blade Cut Resistance Tester measures the cut resistance of a material in accordance with EN 388 (Clause 6.2). A test sample is cut from a glove and is clamped in a holder, which is placed onto the machine. A circular blade is gently lowered so that it touches the sample. The blade rotates whilst moving back and forth across the fabric, and when it penetrates the sample, the machine automatically stops. The number of cycles of the rotating blade is used to determine the cut index, which is a measure of the material s cut resistance. ISO The Cut Resistance Evaluator can be used to measure performance beyond cut level 5 and is therefore suitable for the testing of highly cut resistant materials. A sharp blade is drawn across the sample surface until the material is cut through, the distance of the blade travel is measured. A range of forces are applied to the blade and the test repeated until the cutting force required to cut through a material in a 20mm blade stroke can be calculated. The resulting force in Newtons gives the cut index. Tear and Puncture Resistance EN 388 Clause 6.3 Tear resistance EN 388 Clause 6.4 Puncture resistance The Tensile Tester carries out tests where extension, stretch and compression against distance are required. The tear resistance of a fabric is defined as the force to tear the fabric and puncture resistance as the force required for a needle to break through the material

The Health and Safety at Work Act etc 1974 The Act sets out the general duties which employers have towards employees and members of the public, and which employees also have to themselves and to each other. The Health and Safety at Work Act etc 1974 The Act states that It shall be the duty of every employer to ensure; so far as is reasonably practicable, the health, safety and welfare at work of all his employees What the law requires can be seen as good management and duty of care, look at what risks are present and take sensible measures to tackle them. The sections of the Act relevant to this Expert Guide are: 2.2a Providing and maintaining safe plant and systems of work 2.2b Ensuring the provision of safe methods to use, handle, store and transport articles and substances 2.2c Providing information, instruction, training and supervision. For a full list please visit Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations 1992 The PPE Regulations state that PPE should be used as a last resort. Wherever there are risks to health and safety that cannot be adequately controlled in other ways, PPE should be supplied. The Regulations also require that PPE is: Properly assessed before use to make sure it is fit for purpose; Maintained and stored properly; Provided with instructions on how to use it safely; Used correctly by employees. Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations 2002 If employees are using chemicals or other hazardous substances at work which can affect their health, COSHH requires employers to control the exposure to these substances to prevent ill health. To comply with the COSHH regulations employers must follow the steps below: 1. Assess the risks 2. Decide what precautions are needed 3. Prevent or control exposure 4. Ensure that control measures are used, maintained and tested where appropriate 5. Monitor the exposure 6. Carry out health surveillance where the assessment deems necessary 7. Prepare plans and procedures to deal with accidents, incidents and emergencies 8. Ensure employees are properly informed, trained and supervised Employees have an additional duty to use control measures, use any storage equipment provided, report defective equipment and be available for health surveillance where required. 5 The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 These Regulations make more explicit what employers are required to do to manage health and safety under the Health and Safety at Work Act. The Regulations (Regulations 3 and 5) require employers to have specific arrangements in place to plan, organise, assess, control, monitor and review. The regulations include an eight stage process: Health and Safety Policy Responsibility Identify Risk Assessment Control Train Monitor and Review Records 6

Standard EN420: General requirements for protective gloves This standard defines the general requirements for glove design and construction, comfort and efficiency, marking and information applicable to all protective gloves. This standard can also apply to arm guards. Some gloves designed for very specialist applications, such as electrician s or surgical gloves are governed by other stringent job-specific standards. A performance level, illustrated by a number (between 0 and 4) shows how a glove has performed in a specific test and how the results of that testing are graded. Level 0 indicates that the glove is either untested or falls below the minimum performance level. A performance level X means that the test method is not suitable for the glove sample. Higher numbers indicate higher levels of performance. Standard EN388: Gloves giving protection from mechanical risks This standard applies to all kinds of protective gloves in respect of physical and mechanical aggressions caused by abrasion, blade cut, puncture and tearing. ABCD Protection against mechanical hazards is expressed by a pictogram followed by four numbers (performance levels), each representing test performance against a specific hazard. The mechanical risks pictogram (above) is accompanied by a four digit code. a. Abrasion resistance (0-4) Based on the number of cycles required to abrade through the sample glove. b. Blade cut resistance (0 5) Based on the number of cycles required to cut through the sample at a constant speed. c. Tear resistance (0 4) Based on the amount of force required to tear the sample. d. Puncture resistance (0 4) Based on the amount of force required to pierce the sample with a standardsized point. The framework Regulation (EC) ISO 1935/2004 packaging and food contact materials Food contact materials are materials that are intended to be in contact with food. These can be things that are quite obvious like a glass, a can for soft drinks, but also machinery in a food factory or a coffee machine. The Food Standards Agency is responsible for ensuring the public is protected against chemicals that might transfer onto food from materials they come into contact with, for example packaging and utensils. It carries out research and surveillance and uses the result of this to help enforce controls. Regulation (EC) No. 1935/2004 sets out the law on chemical migration from all materials and articles in contact with food. It includes provisions for materials and articles expected to come into contact with foods or to transfer their constituents to food (such as printing inks and adhesive labels). Standard EN374: Gloves giving protection from chemicals and micro-organisms This standard specifies the capability of gloves to protect the user against chemicals and/or micro-organisms. Glove manufacturers usually produce charts to show how well their gloves perform against different substances. Manufacturers use three key terms, breakthrough time, permeation rate and degradation: Breakthrough time is the time a chemical takes to permeate through the glove material and reach the inside. Permeation is a process by which a chemical can pass through a material without going through pinholes or pores or other visible openings. This tells you how long you can use a glove for. The permeation rate is the amount that then permeates through. The higher the rate the more of the chemical will move through the glove. Choose a low rate. Some chemicals can destroy the glove material. It may get harder, softer or may swell. Degradation indicates the deterioration of the glove material on contact with a specific chemical. Choose gloves with an excellent or good degradation rating

Standard EN407: Gloves giving protection from thermal hazards (heat / fire) This standard specifies thermal performance for protective gloves against heat and/or fire. The nature and degree of protection is shown by a pictogram followed by a series of six performance levels, relating to specific protective qualities. The heat and flame pictogram is accompanied by a six digit number: a. Flammability resistance (0 to 4) Based on the length of time the material continues to burn and glow after the source of ignition is removed. b. Contact heat resistance (0 to 4) Based on the temperature range ( C) at which the user will feel no pain for at least 15 seconds. c. Convective heat resistance (performance level 0 to 4) Based on the length of time the glove is able to delay the transfer of heat from a flame. d. Radiant heat resistance (0 to 4) Based on the length of time the glove is able to delay the transfer of heat when exposed to a radiant heat source. e. Resistance to small splashes of molten metal (0 to 4) The number of molten metal drops required to heat the glove sample to a given level. f. Resistance to large quantities of molten metal (0 to 4) The weight of molten metal required to cause smoothing or pinholing across a simulated skin placed directly behind the glove sample. The test is failed if metal droplets remain stuck to the glove material or if the specimen ignites. Standard EN511: Gloves giving protection from thermal hazards (cold) This standard applies to any gloves to protect the hands against convective and contact cold down to -50 C. Protection against cold is expressed by a pictogram followed by a series of three performance levels, relating to specific protective qualities. The cold hazard pictogram is accompanied by a three digit number: A. Resistance to convective cold (0 to 4) Based on the thermal insulation properties of the glove which are obtained by measuring the transfer of cold via convection. B. Resistance to contact cold ( 0 to 4) Based on the thermal resistance of the glove material when exposed to contact with a cold object. C. Penetration by water (0 or 1) 0 = water penetration. 1 = no water penetration. Standard EN421: Gloves giving protection from radioactive contamination and ionising radiation This standard applies to gloves to protect from ionising radiation and radioactive contamination. The nature of protection is shown by a pictogram relating to the specific protective qualities. To protect from radioactive contamination, the glove has to be liquid proof and needs to pass the penetration test defined in EN374. For gloves used in containment enclosures, the glove shall pass in addition a specific air pressure leak test. Materials may be modelled by their behaviour to ozone cracking. This test is optional and can be used as an aid to selecting gloves. To protect from ionising radiation, the glove has to contain a certain amount of lead or equivalent metal, quoted as lead equivalence. This lead equivalence must be marked on each glove

Selecting the right glove EN420 Sizing of Gloves Selecting the right glove can be a complex and difficult task. It is important to take several factors into consideration. The key issues can be summarised as follows: The Glove, Gauntlet or Sleeve must: Be accredited to meet the required standard. The glove should comply with EN legislation and address the requirements identified in your risk assessment. Be the most appropriate material for the application, there are many combinations of yarn/liner/coating/dip. Be fit for purpose. For example, Welders gloves are designed for Welding applications, Chemical gauntlets for handling chemicals. Protect the user. Should an accident occur you must be sure that the PPE provides a robust defence. Protect the product from user contamination. There are many applications where a barrier between person and product is required. Be comfortable to wear. Users need to be encouraged not to take gloves off. If they are not comfortable this is more likely. Getting the fit and feel of the glove right will encourage wearer compliance. Be as dexterous, sensitive and ergonomic as possible for each application. Reduce potential down time, risk and incidence of injury. Safety at work is improved. Be multi functional where necessary. Wearers may need more than one type of protection, for example cut protection and chemical protection. Please see the selection guide published on the inside back cover of this Expert Guide for more detailed information covering glove materials/styles and types of hand protection. Common workplace hazards Common Hazard Abrasive Wheels Allergens / biological agents Glove Properties Good grip, warm, anti vibration Biological / chemical protection Page Ref Chemicals Chemical protection 29 Electrical Electrical protection 32 Food Food approved, disposable 23 Knives Cut protection 13 Machinery / Mechanical Hazards Manual Handling Grip, abrasion, cut, tear, puncture Grip, abrasion, cut, tear, puncture Sharps Cut protection 21 Temperature - hot or cold Thermal protection 27 Ordering the correct size glove will ensure that gloves are comfortable, safe and improve wearer compliance. To determine the required size use a tape measure and measure the circumference of the hand, above the thumb and below the fingers. The circumference of the hand, rounded to the nearest half inch is the worker s glove size (1 inch = 2.54cm). This method does not account for all variations, for example the length of the fingers can affect the fit of the gloves so if someone has smaller fingers they may need a smaller size. 12 Mechanical Handling Mechanical hazards are associated with the handling of rough or sharp objects which could abrade, cut or pierce the skin such as glass, thin metal sheet and masonry blocks. A mechanical hazard is not associated with moving machinery; in fact it can be extremely dangerous to wear gloves which could catch in moving parts or serrated blades. Please note - Gloves should not be used when working with serrated blades. USE GUARDS. Injuries resulting from the manual handling of objects and materials with sharp edges are common in the engineering industry. Data from businesses show that as many as a third of all recorded injuries are caused by cuts from sharp metal during handling. Even minor incidents can lead to significant time off work for the injured individual. Many accidents result in the injured person being away from work for some days or transferring to lighter duties. Problems can also occur with infections of uncovered cuts or contamination of cuts with chemicals. We offer a range of gloves and many combinations of liners and coatings so that you can choose the correct one for your application. We offer a range of different styles of coating including dotted palm, palm or fully coated so you can select the ideal level of grip without sacrificing comfort.
