Teach Repentance and Baptize Converts Missionary Broadcast, January 20, 2016 The Role of the Holy Ghost in Conversion Elder David A. Bednar Of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles Elder David A. Bednar: Elders and sisters, we are going to address a very important topic today: the role of the Holy Ghost in conversion. Let us begin by just asking: What are the first things that come to your mind and your heart as you hear that topic, the role of the Holy Ghost in conversion? Elder Hickmott: When I think about the role of the Holy Ghost in conversion, I think about how important it is to be the vessel for the Lord, for us to bring it into the hearts of the people. How important it is to be the type of missionary to teach people, to be the vessel that the Lord can trust. Elder David A. Bednar: Good. Now, let me focus upon a phrase that you used so that you can bring it into the hearts of [the investigators and] the people. Now do not answer this question, but can you take it into the hearts of the people? The answer is no. You can bring it unto the heart, but you cannot push it into the heart. That is a very, very important thing to understand. There are lots of missionaries who think, if I have enough faith, if my testimony is powerful enough, I can just jam it right into the heart of an investigator. And no, you cannot. If it were true that we take the message into the heart of the investigator, then every person with whom the President of this Church talks about the restored gospel of Jesus Christ would fall to his or her knees and say, Baptize me now. And that does not happen. So we do not control that outcome. Am I making sense? Group: Yes. Elder David A. Bednar: We have the responsibility to be worthy vessels exactly as you said so that we can deliver the message and the power of the Spirit this far. The investigator has to invite it into the heart. We will talk about that in a little bit. That is a great way to begin. Others, please. Sister Lindh: It makes me think of the scripture that I like, 2 Nephi 33:1, where it says: And now I, Nephi, cannot write all the things which were taught among my people; neither am I mighty in writing, like unto speaking; for when a man speaketh by the power of the Holy Ghost the power of the Holy Ghost carrieth it unto the hearts of the children of men. I like that scripture because it s true. I ve seen it in my ministry, and I ve seen it with personal friends. Elder David A. Bednar: Good, excellent. Anyone else? What comes to your mind?

Elder Cochran: I guess it would go along with what Elder Hickmott was saying, because when we re worthy of having the Holy Ghost, we re giving our investigator the best opportunity for it to be carried unto their heart for them to accept it. Elder David A. Bednar: May I ask you another question? Elder Cochran: Sure. Elder David A. Bednar: Why do you think that is so important? Elder Cochran: It s probably the only way that they re going to accept the restored gospel. Elder David A. Bednar: Your investigators can feel the influence of the Holy Ghost. They are not yet in a position to have the constant companionship of the Holy Ghost. You, as baptized members, as set-apart servants of the Lord, are entitled to the constant companionship of the Holy Ghost. Therefore, as you are clean and worthy and valiant in doing your work, you bring that Spirit with you into the teaching setting. You have had the experience of people understanding clearly and simply the things that you teach, and when you leave they become somewhat confused. That is because the Holy Ghost is not there in such rich abundance as it was when you were. Therefore, missionaries need to be obedient and worthy because it is the Holy Ghost that you help bring into that teaching venue and setting that is so powerful. The Holy Ghost is the teacher. It is not me. It is not you. And what we are doing right now, you will never learn anything from what I say. And your investigators ultimately will never learn what matters most from you. It will be from the Teacher the third member of the Godhead who has that responsibility to testify, to teach, to comfort, and to purify. That s the role of the Holy Ghost as the third member of the Godhead. Great observation. Thank you. Elder Garcia: With that being said He being the Teacher, being the Testifier it s very important to call it out, to let the investigator know, This is what you re feeling. Many times in situations where we have been, they feel it, they nod their heads, they re in the lesson. They don t know what it is, though. Elder David A. Bednar: Part of our role as missionaries is to make sure the focus is not on us, but we help them understand the Holy Ghost is the one bringing it into their hearts. They have to open their hearts to allow it in. We can bring it unto, but the investigator has to invite it into. What else has come to your mind? Elder Armstrong: When the Holy Ghost enters into their heart, that s the great motivator. That s what motivates them to keep their commitments, to read the Book of Mormon, to come to church. And so, like Elder Garcia said, it s super important that we point it out to them because it will teach them all things. Elder David A. Bednar: Let me ask you a question. Is it important for you to point it out to them, or is it important for you to help them identify it for themselves? Elder Armstrong: It s to help them recognize it. Elder David A. Bednar: That is right. We have to be careful that we are not so prescriptive that we do not leave them the spiritual latitude to identify it for themselves. So, for example, if you have an investigator who has read the Book of Mormon for the first time, you may ask a very simple question: What was it like for you reading the Book of Mormon for the first time? An investigator may say, There is a lot of this Bible kind of language I do not really understand, but it seemed clear and it made sense to me. That 2

is the person s first testimony about the Book of Mormon. It is very small, but it s the beginning. And that investigator, making those statements acting as an agent invites the Holy Ghost to confirm the truthfulness of what that man or woman said. That is how they will come to know not because you told them but because that experience is confirmed by the power of the Holy Ghost. And our job is to help them act and have those experiences, because as they act in faith, then comes the power of the Holy Ghost. Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ is a principle of action and of power. That sequence is vital. We act in accordance with the teachings of Christ. Then, the Holy Ghost, who is the Testator, can confirm the truthfulness of what has been heard or what has been done. So our job is to help them get the initial information about the gospel, the basic knowledge. But everything that we do is intended to then invite them to act for themselves so that the confirming witness of the Holy Ghost goes into their hearts invited through their own exercise of faith. They are acting in accordance with the teachings of Christ, which invites the power of the Holy Ghost. Is this making sense? Group: Yes. Elder David A. Bednar: OK. So, there is an interesting paradox: We have a role to play; we have been called; we have been set apart; we are to be there; we are to open our mouths; and in the midst of doing that, we have to make sure we do not get in the way, because the Holy Ghost is the teacher. We become that conduit that vessel, as you mentioned through whom that power of the Holy Ghost can bless and touch these investigators who have sincere hearts and real intent. Elder Garcia: I was thinking about the first time I read the Book of Mormon, and what you said. The first time I read the Book of Mormon I had no idea what it was saying. Nothing. The only thing that I remember from that first experience was the way I felt. It wasn t until later that I was taught and I learned about the gospel, that I realized what I was feeling was the Spirit. So you re talking about us not just helping them, not just pointing it out, but identifying and helping them realize what... Elder David A. Bednar: Helping them identify what is taking place in their life. That is right. Which is a delicate balance. See, it is quite easy for us to say, Well you are feeling the Holy Ghost. But if we can help draw that out of them, their attempt to explain what is happening to them helps them understand what is happening to them. And that is better than us just telling them what is happening. In every instance, our responsibility is to invite and entice the Holy Ghost to influence these people, and the people will be influenced as we invite them to act in accordance with the teachings of the Savior. The Holy Ghost is the member of the Godhead who delivers the messages from the Father and the Son. So He is the Comforter, the Testator, the Teacher. If conversion comes by the power of the Holy Ghost, what are the things that we do to assist in that process? Elder Fu: Being worthy to have the Spirit with us. Elder David A. Bednar: We say that so often it can almost be trite. Let s dig down a little bit, OK? Can I just push on you a little? Elder Fu: Of course. Elder David A. Bednar: Why? Why is that so vital? Elder Fu: Well, I think Elder Jeffrey R. Holland said it really well in one of his talks, which is that we can t convert someone else if we re unworthy; the words will choke in our throat. 1 Like you said, we re not their teachers; it s the Holy Ghost. And so we re not giving this investigator the perfect opportunity, 3

which was said before, to actually accept this gospel if we re not providing a setting where the Spirit can actually be there. Elder David A. Bednar: Good. Very good. Other thoughts? Elder Cochran: Just kind of off of being worthy, that comes with being exactly obedient striving to be exactly obedient because when we re not, the Spirit s not with us. And when it s not with us, then we re just saying words. I ve heard the phrase they ll remember what they felt more than what they heard. Elder David A. Bednar: A lack of obedience becomes a barrier to the influence of the Holy Ghost coming into a teaching setting and potentially entering into the hearts of those people. We can stand in the way of that occurring. Elder Bigham: One thing that may be a common belief is missionaries sometimes feeling like they can do it themselves, not really allowing the Holy Ghost to fully be there. They go off onto a routine of teaching people instead of following the Spirit during the lesson. Elder David A. Bednar: So they have some memorized script; they just kind of go through the motions. Let me see if this example relates to what you have just said: Two missionaries are teaching, they are alternating in the principles that they are presenting, and while one elder or sister is teaching, the other one is checked out, thinking about, well, I got this letter from home. I need to take care of this task, or something else, right? You re all smiling. We have all done that. We would never say that, but I want you to consider this teaching is not talking; teaching is listening and observing. It is ears to hear, eyes to see. Then you can discern. Only when you discern can you know what to say. Who is in the best position to observe and listen when a lesson is being presented? It is the missionary who is not talking. The missionary who is talking should be listening and observing, but the other one ought to just be dialed in, because the missionary who is not talking may sense a reservation, and the answer to the reservation will most likely not be accepted from you. If you are teaching a couple, you may then receive the inspiration to ask a question, and in giving the answer, one of the spouses is teaching the other spouse because they will accept it from the spouse. Who is most likely to be in the position to receive that inspiration? The missionary who is not talking. It requires really intense spiritual focus all the time. This is hard work, so you don t have the luxury of taking a few minutes off in the middle of a discussion when your companion is doing the talking and you re kind of drifting someplace else. Sister Lindh: I m in my third transfer and I m in Spanish, which is not my first language, and that happens a lot actually, especially with my trainer. I would just be sitting there trying to keep up with the Spanish when I suddenly felt like I needed to ask one thing. There was this couple that was baptized back in September and he would answer most of her questions. We didn t have to do the work, and I was like, This is awesome, the fact that he gets to do this. He s growing and she s growing, and now we re working toward getting to the temple for them. Elder David A. Bednar: Good. Now the truth of the matter is and I hope I do not offend everybody by saying this none of us are smart enough to know when to ask the right questions. We do not even know the questions to ask. But if we are doing our very best, then our utterances will be guided and inspired, and there will be things that do not seem to even fit into the pattern of where we might be going. We have all had that experience. It is not always that way, but if we are so rigid and scripted that we never 4

let it be that way, we are relying totally on the arm of the flesh and not allowing the Holy Ghost to be the teacher. We are getting in the way of the Holy Ghost in this work of conversion. Elder Nmesirionye: I think our testimony plays a huge part in everything we do, in inviting the Spirit. I remember when I was being taught as a convert, and they taught the lesson and I understood some part of it, but it wasn t until they shared and bore their testimony that I understood the whole part of the lesson. The Holy Ghost testified to me that what they were saying was true. And with that, I was able to see things, or see a lesson in a different way than I first saw it. Elder David A. Bednar: Good. So the Spirit that was introduced through the bearing of testimony was a vital part of your learning in your conversion? Am I getting that right? Elder Nmesirionye: Right. Elder David A. Bednar: Good. Now let s summarize a couple of things: The Holy Ghost is the teacher; we are not. But we have a very important role to play. That role is to be worthy conduits through whom the Holy Ghost can come to that teaching setting, and hopefully the investigators will invite it into their lives. One of the things that we do to assist investigators is invite them to prepare to learn. What is faith in the Savior? It is a principle of action and of power. So as we invite investigators to act, many times, the preparation is more important than what happens when we are interacting with them, because they are being guided and taught in a powerful way. That preparation for a lesson then leads to interaction that edifies. The Holy Ghost is the source of edification in the lives of these people. Our worthiness helps us in that teaching setting so that the Holy Ghost is there to influence and bless these people as they are asking, seeking, and knocking. Comments about what has just been said? Elder Triana: I m just thinking about how we need to change our mindset and not look at the Holy Ghost as a tool that we can use in conversion. We need to sincerely pray to our Heavenly Father and say, We are the tools right now and You are the teacher, and change that so if we are blank in a lesson or something, let s let Him be the guide. That s how we can bring the Spirit, and we can be truly the vessels that just carry the message. Elder David A. Bednar: So does that mean all the stuff that is emphasized about You ve got to prepare and have these lesson plans ready to go you just do not need that? Let the Holy Ghost do it, right? Elder Triana: No. Elder David A. Bednar: No. This takes much more intense preparation. All of the planning, all of the anticipating the needs of the investigator, all of the things that we do set the stage for the Holy Ghost to use us. Your comment about how we become the tools instead of the Holy Ghost being the tool. The Holy Ghost is in charge here. If we are doing this right, and as we prepare, He will bring all things to our remembrance. He will give us utterance, and in ways we could never anticipate in the moment, by the power of the Holy Ghost we will say the things that are most needful for a particular investigator. Do you have to know that is happening for it to be valid? Missionaries get, Oh, I have to know that it is revelation. No, you do not. Be good. Be worthy. Do your best. Prepare. Go and open your mouth and it will be filled, and you do not have to know in every moment that it s revelation. You just need to have the faith to press forward and go. Faith is the principle of action and of power. We assist the Holy Ghost the best when all of the things that we invite them to do to prepare all of the things that we do to help interact, to edify always lead to invitations to act. We talk about making and keeping commitments, but the sequence of acting in accordance with the teachings of Christ 5

invites the power of the Holy Ghost. We testify as a preparation to invite someone to act. We answer a question as a preparation to invite someone to act. Everything that we do leads to inviting, enticing an investigator to act in accordance with the teachings they re learning and, hopefully, increasingly coming to feel they re true. Sister Pecjak: Something I ve been thinking about this whole time is just that perspective is everything. As long as we remember that it s not about us, we re not here to baptize for us or to teach for us. It s for the Lord. If we really strive to keep the Spirit with us, people will know that and we won t walk out of a lesson thinking, Oh, I did great; that was me, but we ll say, Wow, the Holy Spirit was really strong in that lesson, and they were able to feel that. That s what I ve been thinking about that it s not about us; it s about the Lord. Elder David A. Bednar: Good. You have both made the comment, I have been thinking all throughout this conversation. I have been thinking. Revelation is thoughts to the mind and feelings to the heart. When an investigator says something like, Well, you know, when you are here, I keep thinking about... or, As I read the Book of Mormon, I felt..., those are some of their first experiences with the spiritual gift of revelation. That is where you can help draw that out of them so that they more fully appreciate and understand, spiritually, what is taking place. I m going to ask two quick questions; then we will summarize this session with these two questions. What is the role of the Holy Ghost in conversion? Elder Cochran: To convert the investigator. Elder David A. Bednar: You could not say it any better. He is the Teacher, the Testifier. He is the influence that can help a heart to change. What is our role in assisting the Holy Ghost as the Teacher? Elder Bigham: To create an environment in the lesson to where the investigator will invite the Spirit into their heart. Elder David A. Bednar: Good. So that the investigator is pulling it into the heart through what they do in response to our invitations to act. Other things that we do to assist the Holy Ghost? Elder Von Doersten: We bring it unto them. Elder David A. Bednar: Good. And we invite them to act, to help go from unto to into the heart. They have to do that. We assist, we invite, we entice, but ultimately the investigator has to do that. So what will be different in you as a representative of the Lord as a result of what we have discussed in this 20 minutes? Elder Fu: Relying more on the Spirit. Obviously planning for myself and things like that, but understanding, just like Elder Triana said, changing my mindset to rather than being about me, it s all about the Spirit. That s the thing that I need to do. Elder David A. Bednar: Others? Elder, what s going to be different? Elder Triana: Listening in the lessons when my companion is talking. I ll be listening all the time. Elder David A. Bednar: Good. Elder? Elder Beard-Barrett: To have a humble heart. To be ready to have the Spirit with me all the time so that my investigator can see that I m sincere and that they can receive the feelings of the Spirit as I have, as well. Elder David A. Bednar: Good. Great answer. Elder? Elder Cochran: It would go along with what Elder Triana said, to look at myself as the instrument and not as the Holy Ghost being an instrument. I am the instrument in the Lord s hands. 6

Elder David A. Bednar: Why do you think that is a big change? Elder Cochran: I think it removes pride. It makes you more humble; it makes you more dependent upon the Lord. It makes me want to plan more with my studies so I can be a better-fashioned instrument in the salvation of someone else. Elder David A. Bednar: Without the power of the Holy Ghost, we are utterly incapable of doing what we have been called to do. Do you really think that our capacity to explain the principles of the gospel is going to persuade someone in and of itself? This is about a mighty change of heart that can only come through the influence of the Holy Ghost. We are the Lord s agents to help that Spirit come into the lives of people, to help them learn how to invite it into their hearts. As we end, I want to declare my witness as an Apostle of the Lord Jesus Christ. To you, my fellow servants, I testify that He lives. God the Eternal Father and His Son, Jesus Christ, are real, and They live. The Father and the Son appeared to Joseph Smith. The fulness of the gospel has been restored. And I testify of the living reality of the Father and the Son and the Holy Ghost, who is the instrument of enduring conversion. I declare that witness in the sacred name of the Lord Jesus Christ, amen. Note 1. See Jeffrey R. Holland, We Are All Enlisted, Ensign or Liahona, Nov. 2011, by Intellectual Reserve, Inc.
