To add to the predicament, these measurements may have to be obtained from places where access is inconvenient. These obstacles can be overcome by using Agilent U2000 Series USB power sensors in combination with networked hubs or USB extenders. This not only expands the number of available USB ports so that more power measurements can be taken simultaneously, but also lengthens the distance between the measurement point(s) and the host computer. This demo guide shows the setup for the multi-channel power measurement with the USB power sensors via the Agilent E5813A networked 5-port USB hub. Introduction Traditional power-measurement methodologies require you to connect a power sensor to a power meter. As a result, the setup for multi-channel power measurement in manufacturing test systems will demand plenty of space on the test rack in order to accommodate both the power meter and the power sensors. This increases the costs of a test system significantly. The Agilent U2000 Series USB power sensor is a combination of a power meter and a power sensor that allows you to convert RF and microwave power into digital data directly and analyze this data using a Windows -based software application Agilent N1918A Power Analysis Manager. The powermeasurement readings can be retrieved using standard SCPI commands or IVI-COM/IVI-C drivers. The SCPI-based command set provides a user-friendly programming environment which allows you to communicate with the power sensor in the same way as you communicate with the power meter. 3 The Agilent N1918A Power Analysis Manager Agilent N1918A Power Analysis Manager is Windows-based application software that allows you to perform power analysis. This application interfaces with various front-end hardware devices to obtain time records and perform pulse analysis. N1918A is available in two versions. The basic version, the Agilent Power Panel, offers a standard graphical user interface (GUI) for basic power measurement as well as multichannel power measurement. The advanced version, the Agilent Power Analyzer, is available as an additional software license that allows you to perform advanced pulse analysis, multi-channel power measurements, and statistical analysis as well as measurement-reading recording. Figure 2. The Agilent Power Panel GUI This demo guide describes power measurements using the basic version, Power Panel. You must install the Power Panel before performing the power measurements. 4 Demonstration Extended Distance Multi-Channel Power Measurement with Agilent E5813A Networked 5-Port USB Hub Objectives To show the ability of Agilent U2000 Series USB power sensors connected to Agilent E5813A to perform multichannel power measurement To overcome the limitation of USB cable length (five meters according to the USB industry specification) and extend the connection range using Agilent E5813A To demonstrate the capability of Agilent N1918A Power Analysis Manager, Power Panel version to perform multi-channel power measurement Using a LAN to communicate with your USB-interface test instruments allows you to control and program the instruments remotely without connectiondistance limitation. The Agilent E5813A networked 5-port USB hub provides these advantages and also allows multi-channel power measurement to be taken simultaneously when multiple USB power sensors are connected to the networked hub. The following sections show you how to extend the connection distance using the Agilent E5813A networked 5-port hub via a LAN cable for multi-channel power measurement with the Agilent U2000 Series USB power sensors. The Agilent E5813A Networked 5-Port USB Hub The E5813A networked 5-Port USB hub uses USB over an IP connection (LAN) to overcome the distance limitation. The USB power sensor can be remotely controlled from a PC or laptop via LAN. The E5813A can connect up to five units of the USB power sensors. In order for the USB power sensors to be detected by the E5813A, you must to install E5813A configuration utility. Connect your PC/laptop (installed with the N1918A Power Analysis Manager Power Panel version, Agilent E5813A PC utility driver, and Agilent IO Libraries Suite) to the E5813A via LAN. 2. Connect the USB power sensors and the E5813A via USB cable as shown in Figure 5. Perform the steps described on the next page to interconnect the E5813A and the USB power sensors. 4

USB power sensors and E5813A configuration diagram Instructions Keystrokes To establish connection between E5813A and PC/laptop via LAN: 1. Run the E5813A configuration utility. Double-click on the E5813A Configuration Utility shortcut on the desktop or access the program via Windows start menu. 2. Configure the E5813A (See Figure 6). Double-click on the E5813A or select the device and click Configure to set the IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway. 3. Configure the IP address and subnet mask (See Figure 7). 4. Configure the gateway and add the E5813A into connection list. Enter a device name that easily identifies the E5813A. Enter the IP address and subnet mask. Enter the gateway for your network. Tick the checkbox of Add to connection list to add the E5813A into connection list. 5. Reboot the E5813A. For the changes to take effect, click Update to reboot the device. Figure 6. 7 Performing Multi-Channel Power Measurement Follow the instructions shown below to perform multi-channel power measurement using the N1918A Power Analysis Manager, Power Panel software. Instructions 1. Run the N1918A Power Analysis Manager, Power Panel software. Keystrokes Double-click the Power Panel shortcut on the desktop or access the program via the Windows start menu. 2. Create a multilist display view. 3. Capture power measurement using the multilist display. Click from the main toolbars. On the multilist display, right-click to open a content menu. Select Assignment Measurement to assign a measurement to the multilist display. Select your preferred measurement and click Assign to proceed. 4. Assign more measurements. Repeat step 3 by selecting other measurements. 5. Run all measurements at one time Click. (see Figure 9). 6. Stop all measurements at one time. Click. Figure 9. 8 Conclusion The most aggravating limitation of USB is the length restriction. USB has an accepted maximum length of only five meters, according to the USB industry specification. In order to go beyond the limit of five meters, you need to use a USB networked hub. Agilent E5813A networked 5-Port USB hub is capable of extending the connection of the Agilent U2000 Series USB power sensors when you perform multi-channel power measurement via Agilent N1918A Power Analysis Manager, Power Panel software.
