COMPUTERS & INTERNET SAFETY Saint Francis Academy April 26, 2012
HELLO! Mr. Michael Hoehl Pronounced Mr. Hale
AGENDA Let s talk about the Internet! Challenges Trivia Safety Awareness Call to Action
CHALLENGE FOR CHILDREN Identifying Internet friends/families and strangers Knowing what personal information is appropriate to share and receive Immature threat and crisis handling skills Privacy and Permanency are foreign concepts Well if I read it in the paper it must be true now applies to the Internet
PARENT CHALLENGE Just like driving, the Internet is a powerful tool our children need to learn how to use. Just like driving, it is our responsibility to teach them how to do it safely. Unlike driving, our kids may know more about the Internet than we do.
WHAT IS THE INTERNET?
WHAT IS THE INTERNET? Large collection of computers all connected together using networks Global with no geography nor boundary Few international laws or police Huge community of friends and family as well as strangers
HOW TO ACCESS INTERNET? Many ways to access Internet
INTERNET BENEFITS Medicine Music Education News and Information Games
THE INTERNET GENERATION First generation raised with Internet Internet is growing just like our children! Your child may be the most Internet knowledgeable in family With knowledge comes responsibility
TRIVIA What are Patches?
TRIVIA Patches Fix for a computer program that improves security, usability or performance. Patch at least monthly!
WHAT ARE COMMON THREATS?
3 THREAT SOURCES Strangers Friends and Friends Your Child and YOU!
THREAT SOURCE - STRANGERS Internet provides a convenient way to harvest personal information for GOOD and BAD purposes YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION Parent location Driver s License Birthplace Password Birthday Phone Number Age Credit Card Home Address School Name Travel Plans Boy or Girl
THREAT SOURCE - STRANGERS Strangers masquerade as friends and family using
PRACTICE THE 3 W s 1. Who is asking for information? 2. What are they asking for? 3. Why do they need it? If the answer is unclear or seems strange tell a parent or trusted adult!
TRIVIA What is Malware?
TRIVIA Malware Software or script specifically intended to harm a computer or the data it contains. Also known as virus, worm, spyware, trojan, rootkit, or malicious code. Anti-Virus software and patching help detect and defeat malware!
THREAT SOURCE - FRIENDS Friends and family may unintentionally forward Internet threats via , IM, or Social Network Websites
THREAT SOURCE - FAMILY Don t forget Grammy, Pop-pop, and Aunt Ann!! Family members are as vulnerable to Internet based attacks as we are. Their computers and the implicit trust we assign represent a threat that must be considered.
FRIENDS AND CYBERBULLIES Law considers Cyberbullying a form of harrassment
CYBERBULLIES Cyberbullying involves the use of information and communication technologies to support deliberate, repeated, and hostile behavior by an individual or group, that is intended to harm others. Bill Beasley
VICTIM EARLY WARNINGS Depression and/or isolation Hidden computer display screens Fixation on computer use Sudden, unexplained deletion of s, IM, connections, photos, pages, or content Panic need to access Internet Demand for exclusive use of computer, tablet, game, or smartphone
TRIVIA What is Phishing? Pronounced fishing
TRIVIA Phishing or Instant Message that invites reader to go to a fake website. Once the unsuspecting reader is lured to the legitimate looking website, the reader is asked for private information and their PC is attacked.
THREAT SOURCES YOUR CHILD! Advise children to carefully consider Internet messages 1. Might content be embarrassing? 2. Are you angry or upset? 3. Might content be considered rude or hurtful? High Schools, Colleges, and Employers might want to review child Internet communications
THREAT SOURCES YOU! Do not disable/uninstall security software Do not share accounts Do not share passwords Do not use Admin accounts by default Do not use public, unfamiliar computers Security is in place to protect you and your family
WHAT CAN PARENTS DO? Educate and Stay Educated about the Internet Dedicate a kid friendly computer or VM Keep the computer in a public area Establish proper computer use rules Require good behavior and ethics on-line Consider monitoring and filtering utilities
TRIVIA What is a Firewall?
TRIVIA Firewall A personal firewall is a program installed on your computer or on your broadband router that inspects and controls Internet traffic. The purpose of this software is hide the computer from network attack and port scans by not responding to unsolicited network traffic.
WHAT CAN PARENTS DO? Educate and Stay Educated about the Internet Learn computer/device/smartphone security controls Teach your child similarities between real and virtual worlds (e.g., etiquette, trust, etc.) Encourage your child to learn about security Remind your child to practice 3 W s Review SFA Internet Safety for Kids with your child
USEFUL RESOURCES and computer software or website user guide
WHAT CAN PARENTS DO? Dedicate a kid friendly computer or VM One computer dedicated to family/business work and the other computer for your child Have your child be responsible for keeping the computer up to date, secure, and backed up! Add kid friendly features, utilities, and security controls (e.g., Google for Kids) Keep important family/work information isolated
WHAT CAN PARENTS DO? Keep the computer in a public area Most modern computers have cameras and video capability that are not appropriate for use in all locations of the house. This applies to tablets and laptops too! Approach is less invasive to child s privacy and boundaries and fosters sharing Printer too! (kids love to print LOTS of pictures)
WHAT CAN PARENTS DO? Establish rules for proper use of computer, devices, and smartphones Empower child with responsibilities that safeguard computer from viruses and malware Have child sign contract Post next to computer (and at Grammy s computer) Include breach of contract terms Like any policy, it should be reviewed and updated over time
WHAT CAN PARENTS DO? Require good behavior and ethics on-line Remind your child that their messages and postings can be retrieved even after being deleted and there is always a copy in the recipient s inbox Help your child develop skills to manage stress and emotion when communicating electronically What happens today can effect the child tomorrow including high school, college, and employment
WHAT CAN PARENTS DO? Consider monitoring and filtering utilities Filtering allows you to control what activity your children can and cannot do Time based security controls allow you to control when computer/device/phone can be used Monitoring is passive and allows you to log and report what your child was doing There is no one size fits all solution think of layers
WHAT CAN PARENTS DO? Consider monitoring and filtering utilities Most controversial consideration as it requires a balance of privacy and parenting Parents may respect kids privacy...but predator will not! Generally most effective for younger children prevents them from accidently accessing harmful content.
USEFUL UTILITIES
WHAT CAN PARENTS DO? Ask your child what they would do if
WHAT IS MOST IMPORTANT? Everyone is still learning Internet is still growing Risks are still emerging Foster open and frequent conversations with kids
COMPUTER & INTERNET SAFETY Thanks!
