2016 Transit Service Review CCT Meeting #2 Calgary Transit April 19, 2016

Why a Transit Service Review? The 2016 Transit Service Review proposes a number of bus route changes. The goal of this review is to adjust services: To eliminate duplication Improve service frequencies Restore evening services Provide attractive, efficient and sustainable service to key destinations 18/04/2016 Presentation 2

Why a Transit Service Review? In comparison with other areas, the NW require 10% to 25% more service hours to carry similar levels of ridership A number of bus routes in NW and Inner City have low ridership Minimum passengers per service hour (P/SH) = 25 regular bus & 15 community shuttle RouteAhead calls for minimum base service with frequency of 30 minutes throughout the day, 15 hours per day (95% within 400 m) Many routes don not meet this minimum standard 18/04/2016 Presentation 3

Erosion of Service As a result of low ridership, evening and night service has recently been removed on several bus routes (e.g. 9, 10, 37, & 143) Further service reductions are likely without major bus route changes 18/04/2016 Presentation 4

Summary of Feedback 18/04/2016 Presentation 12

General Feedback - Supportive Increase in service span Increase in frequency Services to UofC, Market Mall, and Foothills Medical Centre Array of services at Dalhousie Station Simple, direct route concepts 18/04/2016 Presentation 13

General Feedback - Issues More transfers required Frequency is still too low Requires use of an overcrowded LRT Desire transfer-less trips to Downtown Access for seniors who cannot walk as far as others Shuttle layout insufficient for walkers, wheelchairs, scooters, etc. New route numbers needed to reduce confusion Disapproval or concern over elements of the engagement process (timelines, communication, information material) Green check mark means a change to the plan or some other factor will mitigate the issue 18/04/2016 Presentation 14

Main Supportive Themes Rou t e 8 North Pointe - Brentwood The two-way service on Northmount Dr provides a better connection to UofC and Northland Good frequency Main Issues Frequency is too low in the off-peak Concern over expected overcrowding and slowing down of service Missing connection to Dalhousie Station 18/04/2016 Presentation 15

Main Supportive Themes Rou t e 9 Dalhousie Sunnyside Increase in service to and through the UofC and Foothills Medical Centre Good connections to LRT stations (Dalhousie, Brentwood, Sunnyside) Increase in service span Increase in frequency Good service to and within the areas of: Sunnyside community 5 Av NW / 6 Av NW corridor 29 St NW corridor University City / Brentwood Mall 18/04/2016 Presentation 16

Rou t e 9 Dalhousie Sunnyside Main Issues Requires transfer to go to Downtown Requires transfer to access Market Mall, 40 Av NW, B ridgeland, and Alberta Children s Hospital Overcrowding on the LRT is a main deterrent to transferring 18/04/2016 Presentation 17

Main Supportive Themes Rout e 10 City Hall Southcentre Good to remove the link from the NW to the South Expected improvement in reliability and route simplicity Retains coverage on Macleod Tr SW Good service on Fairmount Dr SE Main Issues Route doesn t extend far enough through Downtown Frequency is too low Service span is too short Missing bus service from South to destinations in the NW Missing service in Montgomery 18/04/2016 Presentation 18

Main Supportive Themes Rout e 31 Dalhousie - University Routing between major destinations of Dalhousie, Market Mall, Alberta Children s Hospital and the south side of the UofC Direct, simple route Good frequency Main Issues Missing LRT connection to the east (University, Banff Trail, or Lions Park stations) Missing connection to Brentwood Station Missing connection to Foothills Medical Centre Missing service on 32 Av NW 18/04/2016 Presentation 19

Main Supportive Themes Rout e 122 Market Mall Kerby Good connections to important destinations including Market Mall, UofC, and Downtown West Good service on Varsity Dr NW Prefer Downtown West / Kerby connection over Sunalta Main Issues Service does not extend far enough into Downtown Frequency is too low Missing service on 20 Av NW 18/04/2016 Presentation 20

Main Supportive Themes Rout e 405 Dalhousie Hillhurst Service from Dalhousie to Northland (shopping, schools, library, etc.) Service in Hillhurst / West Hillhurst Service on Northmount Dr NW Connection to Lions Park Station / North Hill Mall Main Issues Frequency is too low Service span is too short Missing service on 23 St NW 18/04/2016 Presentation 21

Main Supportive Themes Rout e 407 Brentwood Greenwood Service in Bowness and Greenwood Service on 40 Av NW Connections to Market Mall, Brentwood Station, and UofC Main Issues Frequency is too low Missing service in Montgomery Requires a regular bus Brentwood loop is too long 18/04/2016 Presentation 22

Main Supportive Themes Rout e 412 Bow Tr ail Increase in frequency Increase in service span Good coverage on Bow Trail and in Westgate Main Issues Missing service in Beltline / Downtown / Sunalta Duplication of LRT (changed already based on CCT Round 1 feedback) 18/04/2016 Presentation 23

Main Supportive Themes Rout e 419 Bridgeland Parkhill Increase in service span Continuation of service from B ridgeland into the Downtown Continuation of service within Parkhill and Beltline Main Issues Shuttle layout insufficient for walkers, wheelchairs, scooters, etc. Shortening of route within B ridgeland Missing connection from Downtown/Beltline to NW destinations Frequency is too low Changes to routing within Parkhill / Stanley Park 18/04/2016 Presentation 24

Main Supportive Themes Rout e 422 / 437 Dalhousie Varsity Estates Good coverage in Dalhousie and Varsity Estates Good connection to Dalhousie Station Increased frequency Short, direct route Main Issues Missing service to Market Mall Requires a transfer to get to major destinations and schools Frequency is too low Should be combined into a single route for simplicity 18/04/2016 Presentation 25

Main Supportive Themes Rout e 37/ 43/ 137/ 143 Northwest Loops - Overall Option B appeared to have more support overall, but both had significant support for different reasons Increase in service span Increase in frequency Separation of numbers Main Issues Requires a transfer to go to major destinations including Market Mall, Northland Mall, Brentwood Station, and UofC Requires transfer from Silver Springs to F.E. Osborne Frequency is too low Still too much duplication 18/04/2016 Presentation 26

Main Supportive Themes Rout e 37/ 43/ 137/ 143 Opt ion A Simpler to understand Less change from the status quo All of Ranchlands has service to YMCA, Robert Thirsk, and the library Main Issues Indirect service to Crowfoot Station from Silver Springs and Ranchlands Requires transfer from Scenic Acres to destinations north of Crowchild Tr NW Too much duplication of service 18/04/2016 Presentation 27

Main Supportive Themes Rout e 37/ 43/ 137/ 143 Opt ion B More direct service from Silver Springs and Ranchlands to Crowfoot Station Two-way loop from Scenic Acres to Crowfoot Station with direct service to destinations north of Crowchild Tr NW Main Issues Requires transfers for some in Ranchlands to go to Robert Thirsk, YMCA, or library The Ranchlands crossover is too confusing Route 37 should continue on the north side to Robert Thirsk Route 43 should continue on Ranchlands Bv NW 18/04/2016 Presentation 28

Rout e 145 Northland Discontinuation Main Issues Currently appears well-used Would now require a transfer The new journey will be too long considering the lack of reliable alternative buses and overcrowding on the LRT 18/04/2016 Presentation 29

Rout e 404 North Hill Discontinuation Main Issues Missing service on 21 Av NW from Parkview Village and Confederation Park to Lions park Station and North Hill Mall Missing service within Mount Pleasant, Briar Hill / Hounsfield Heights, and Rosedale Longer walk to get to alternative buses for seniors and persons with reduced mobility 18/04/2016 Presentation 30
