1 DEBORAH M. FIGART Brief Biography Deborah M. Figart received her B.A. in Economics in 1981, summa cum laude, from Wheaton College in Norton, Massachusetts, and her Ph.D. in Economics in 1986 from The American University in Washington, DC. Throughout her career, she has taught courses in economics, management, women s studies, labor studies, and other interdisciplinary subjects in the social sciences at the undergraduate and graduate levels. She also spent a semester teaching at a study abroad program in Brussels, Belgium, in 1987, and was a Fulbright Research Scholar in Western Europe in Dr. Figart has published books and articles on social economics topics related to the labor market: pay equity, discrimination, working time, job evaluation, emotional labor, career ladders, employment policies, and poverty. From , she served as President of the Association for Social Economics. Currently, she is Coeditor of one of the Association s journals, Review of Social Economy, and on the Editorial Boards of Feminist Economics, the Review of Political Economy, and the new journal, International Journal of Pluralism and Economics Education. Dean Figart has also served on the Board of Directors of the Association for Evolutionary Economics ( ) and the editorial board of the Journal of Economic Issues ( ). In 1992, she was one of 50 founding members of the International Association for Feminist Economics and remains active in the association, especially in the area of long-range fundraising. She reviews articles and manuscripts for numerous journals in the social sciences and book publishers. Dean Figart is a widely published scholar on labor market policies in the USA and Europe, especially the area of gender and race-ethnicity. Her numerous books consist of authored and edited volumes, including Living Wages, Equal Wages: Gender and Labor Market Policies in the United States (London: Routledge, 2002), coauthored with Ellen Mutari and Marilyn Power. For a sample of her scholarship in books, journals, and edited volumes in economics, political economy, sociology, industrial relations, and women s studies, please consult her major publications list. She also serves her profession and the community by reviewing manuscripts for professional journals and book publishers, delivering papers at conferences, speaking to organizations and community groups, writing book reviews and op ed. pieces, and responding to media requests for interviews and information on employment issues.
