1 Department of Education Learners first, connected and inspired Guidelines for First Aid Kits in School and Colleges Department of Education
2 Guidelines for First Aid Kits in School and Colleges Every school/college must have an appropriately stocked first aid kit. A dustproof, lockable and clearly labelled first aid box must be located within the school, and in some circumstances within a student's classroom. It must be stored in a secure place, not accessible to students. Student medical plans must include statements about where the key/s to the first aid kit are located and who has access to them. A first aid kit might include: Quantities for number of people on site Cotton wool 40g packets 3 6 Cotton wool 00g packets 2 Gauze swabs 00mm x 00mm, packets of Burn dressings, sterile, small 6 2 Burn dressings, sterile, large 3 6 Disposable Resus mask/shields 2 Eye pads, sterile, packets of 5 2 Conforming roller bandages 25mm 3 6 Conforming roller bandages 50mm 3 6 Triangular bandages 2 3 Plastic dressing strips 60mm x m packets 2 Adhesive strapping tape, 25mm x 50mm rolls 2 Adhesive strapping tape, 50mm x 500mm rolls 2 Please refer to the online copy of this document (TASED-4-724), located on the Tasmanian Department of Education s website to ensure this version is the most recent (Version 2.0). See notes below. 2 Adrenaline (EpiPen). See notes below. 2 Tissues 2 4 Approved " sharps" disposal container (AS or AS/NZS ) 2 Box of single use gloves 2 Please refer to the online copy of this document (TASED-4-724), located on the Tasmanian Department of Education s website to ensure this version is the most recent (Version 2.0). 4 Quantities for number of people on site Tongs 2 Plastic waste bags 2 2 Paper towels Bleach - household (4 per cent available sodium hypochlorite) small container/bottle Detergent - small container/bottle NB It is recommended that these items are purchased in small containers, rather than decanting from large containers into smaller, hand labelled containers. Kidney dishes Notes: Analgesics (such as paracetamol and ibuprofen) and naproxen (used in the treatment of menstrual pain) should not be kept in a first aid kit. These medications must not be given to students without authorisation from the parent/s and the student s medical practitioner. In such cases the medication should be provided by the parent/s. For further details see the Administration of Medication Procedures. In schools where there are students with intensive health requirements, specific items may need to be added to the first aid kit. The contents of the first aid kit should be checked each six months, and expiry dates reviewed. Check packaging of sterile articles for breaks, tears or fracturing. Asthma spacers are a single patient use item and must be replaced with a new one after use. Contact the Asthma Foundation of Tasmania on to order. Adrenaline (delivered via EpiPens or Anapens) may be purchased from a pharmacist using the order form below. Adrenaline must only be administered to a student for whom a Medical Action Plan is in place. In other emergency situations dial Tasmanian Ambulance services on 000. For further details relating to the administration of adrenaline refer to the Administration of Medication Procedures. Please refer to the online copy of this document (TASED-4-724), located on the Tasmanian Department of Education s website to ensure this version is the most recent (Version 2.0). P a g e 4
5 Do not handle first aid supplies while wearing gloves that may be contaminated. Change gloves and wash hands after cleaning an injured area. In some situations small portable kits may be necessary, so that staff have access to them in a range of settings (eg in the classroom or on yard duty). A small first aid kit can be organised in a waist "bum" bag. This should contain a disposable face mask for resuscitation and disposable gloves. They might also contain items specific to the needs of a child for whom there is a medical action plan. For further information and advice contact your Learning Service or St John Ambulance on (03) Related Documents The following documents are available from (Search for the Doc ID) Administration of Medication Procedures (Doc ID: TASED-4-207) Order Form for Obtaining Adrenaline for School First Aid Kits [Staff access only] (Doc ID: TASED-4-99) Authorised by: Liz Banks Position of authorising person: Deputy Secretary Early Years and Schools Date authorised: June 202 Developed by: Strategic Policy and Planning Date of last review: June 202 Date for next review: June 205 This document replace: First Aid Kits Please refer to the online copy of this document (TASED-4-724), located on the Tasmanian Department of Education s website to ensure this version is the most recent (Version 2.0).
