1 The Lord s Prayer Forgiveness Confiirmatiion -- Lesson A19 PLC New Berlliin,, WI Name: Date: Memory Verse of the Week: If we claim to be without, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:8-9 Teaching Time- Our who art in, hallowed be Thy, Thy come, Thy be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this our bread; and us our trespasses as we those who trespass against us What in the world is a trespass?! It s being somewhere you re supposed to be! Some versions of the Lord s Prayer give us the words or in place of trespasses What are we asking or saying in this part of the Lord s Prayer? 1) That we are God, have mercy on me, a Luke 18:13 and v. 8 of Memory Verse 2) That God can forgive If you, O Lord, kept a of sins, O Lord, who could stand? But with You there is forgiveness; therefore You are feared. -Psalm 130:3-4 & v. 9 of Memory Verse 3) That when God forgives, then we should be to forgive others How many times do we forgive others? Peter came to Jesus and asked, Lord, how many times should I forgive? Up to times? Jesus answered not seven times but times. Matthew 18:21-22 Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each, just as in Christ God forgave. -Ephesians 4:32 Do we really need to forgive others? If you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will forgive you. But if you do forgive men their sins, your Father will forgive your sins. -Matthew 6:14-15 Is there any sin we should not forgive others of? (Circle ones you think cannot be forgiven) Murdering a family member? Torturing and killing Christians? Killing millions of Jewish people? Any Sexual sin? Stealing from you? 2 Reflection Time- Use this space to silently reflect on these questions: 1) Why do you think it s harder to forgive some sins than others? 2) What would our world look like if people always forgave each other? 3) Think back to a time when you were forgiven for something that you did to someone else. What did that feel like? 4) Is there someone in your life that you need to forgive? You don t need to write down their name but use this time to ask God for the strength to help you forgive and let go of the hurt and pain that is associated with the person s actions. Pray for this now and then, try to think of a way you can let them know that you ve forgiven them (call them, talk to them face-to- face, write a letter, text them, , ect..)

3 Group Break Out Lord s Prayer-- Forgiiveness Confiirmatiion Lesson A19 Get To Know Ya- What is one of the worst things that one of your brothers or sisters has ever done to you? (If you sibling you can tell about a friend) don t have a Experiential Activity- (Materials Needed: A roll of tape and a pair of scissors for each group)_ Ask you group to silently think of one sin that they have committed within the last week. As each person tells you that they have thought of one, go around and tape their hands together around the wrists. (It might be best to do the tape upside down so it doesn t stick to skin or hair) After everyone is bound, make them try some ordinary things like giving a high five, getting something out of their pocket, writing their name on their paper, doing a push-up, or whatever else you can think of. The last thing should be to have them sit down and open their Bibles and read Galatians 3:22 together. Talk about how it feels to be a prisoner (of sin.) When that is done have everyone flip to 1 John 1:8-9 (the memory verse for the week). After reading, lead them in a short prayer that offers up their sins to God and asks for forgiveness. After the prayer, go around cut the tape off while you tell them that their sins have been forgiven. After everyone s hands have been freed, have them partner up within your group. Have them imagine that their partner has done something very wrong to them. (Examples: stole your ipod, called you a name, told a lie about you, broke your heart and broke up with you, ect..) When some wrong has been identified, allow each pair to tape each other s legs (around the ankles) together for their wrong-doing. When they are bound have them try to run, or rather, hop around the table once. As everyone is still bound around their ankles, open up and read the story of the Unforgiving Servant in Matthew 18: Some insight to help explain the story: verse 24- ten thousand talents = about $60 million dollars verse 28- one hundred denarii = about $500 dollars Application- 1) Why is it so hard to forgive other people? 2) Why do you think the master was so upset that the servant did not forgive once he had been forgiven? Would you have been upset if you were in the master s place? 3) Which of the following are the hardest for you to do? a) Ask for forgiveness? c) Forgive over and over? b) Give forgiveness? d) Forgive and forget? 4) Have each student go to their neighbor that wronged them and cut them free. As they cut have them say I forgive you because God has forgiven me. 5) Thank God for forgiveness through Jesus and for the strength to forgive the people in your life that you need to forgive.

4 Family Time Lord s Prayer-- Forgiiveness Confiirmatiion-- Lesson A19 Family Time is meant to be an opportunity to get the family talking about spiritual things. Multiple studies show that parents and grandparents are the #1 faith role models in a child s life. We know life is busy, but we want to give you opportunities to grow together. The best time to do it is together in the car, while eating a meal together, or simply anytime you can spend some time together. 1) This week you get to interview your parent(s). Ask them these questions: a) Which of the following are the hardest for you to do? (circle answer) a) Ask for forgiveness? c) Forgive over and over? b) Give forgiveness? d) Forgive and forget? b) What does forgiveness mean to you? c) What does forgiveness feel like? (find answer in Catechism question #227) It shows that we truly that God has us. 4) Read together with your family Psalm 103:8-12 and fill in the blanks below The Lord is (caring) and (full of forgiveness) Slow to, abounding (overflowing) in He will not always, nor will he harbor (like a ship) his anger He does not treat us like our sins or repay us according to our iniquities (sins/wrong doings). For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him; as for as the is from the, so far has he removed our transgressions (sins) from us. 5) What does it mean to you (Confirmand) that God has removed ALL of your sins? For Further Study (an optional section for families that want to go deeper) Read Isaiah 1:1-18. The people of Israel were going against God. God did not like this. In fact, God hated (and still hates) sin. But God loves His people. He wants nothing more than to see His people turn from their sin and seek God s forgiveness. God offers it and turns our sins, which are like the color scarlet, as white as snow (v18). Blood is the color of scarlet. Have you ever tried to take blood out of a white piece of clothing? It s not an easy task. But with God this is not impossible. God actually used blood to take our sins away. That s a strange equation blood (scarlet) + sins (scarlet) = white (as snow). The forgiveness of Jesus is an amazing thing. We thank him for making us, a sinful and rebellious people (much like the people mentioned in Isaiah s time), clean and forgiven!
