2 TOC Monitoring Basic principle for quantitation carbon content in sample is that sample is destructed to release its carbon content in a way that is detectable. Destruction of the organic matter can be achieved chemically or by the effect of heat at elevated temperatures. All carbon forms in the sample are converted into CO2 which is then measured by non-dispersive-infrared(ndir) spectroscopy. As the sample is burned without any preprocessing then the measurement ends up with the result of total carbon concentration. If the sample is acidified prior to burning, inorganic carbon containing compounds, majority being carbonates are decomposed into carbon dioxide and remains. As the carbon of inorganic nature is eliminated by this step, then the final result obtained after combustion and NDIR detection is total organic carbon concentration. Chemical oxygen demand (COD) results can be achieved by adding user defined correlation factor. In TC and TOC measurements, sample is loaded into the combustion furnace through a peristaltic pump. Complete combustion is achieved in two steps. First is at operator adjustable temperatures high enough for destruction of the sample matrix. Second is the catalytic combustion furnace to further improve oxidation of any carbon containing compound into CO2. Combustion step takes place in the patent holding furnace design. Low carbon (up to about 800µgC) containing samples are run under low mode while higher loadings are run under high mode. This is totally under microprocessors control. The operator does not need to be worried about the choice of mode. The operator is free either to use one of the ready-to-use methods or to develop/modify his/her own method. A method is composed of furnace temperature setting, mode setting, either TC or TOC monitoring and some cleaning and validation parameters that are part of performance quality. Task definition is required to initiate an analysis, to instruct the analyzer to run with the method, by using the calibration file at the selected time intervals. One does not need to filtrate the sample process line. This is achieved by using peristaltic pump rather than a syringe pump for sampling from the process line. Peristaltic pump is capable of handling even sludges and fluids carrying concentrated suspended solids, containing even large size particles up to 1200µm.

4 TRL-onlineTOC is RELIABLE TRL-onlineTOC has got the unique feature of self validation of measurements when in doubt. The reference amterial is to be provided by the operator. This is simply a know concentration of a TOC solution in water. Whenever TRL-onlineTOC is in doubt with what it measued, it wants to measure the validation standart to prove or reject what it has got from the sample line. Validation cysle is initiated in the following conditions: Once every certain number of cycles of sample runs, operator adjustable When an unexpected result is obtained As an analog 4-20mA concentration signal is generated by TRL-onlineTOC, a range description is needed to be specified for defining meaning of the value in terms of concentration, that is called range ID. Range ID needs to be slightly above but not vey far beyond the concentration measurement in ordee to have the best resolution for that specific measurement. The best range selection is achieved by TRL-onlineTOC each time it gets a result and send through an analog signal.
