1 METEOROLOGY Homepage: DEGREE REQUIREMENTS Students who have begun their studies or later study according to these degree requirements. Students who have begun their studies before will complete their degree according to those requirements which have been valid then or change to study according to newer requirements. If the studies have begun before , the degree will be completed according to requirements that have taken effect or newer degree requirements. MASTER OF SCIENCE (120 CR) IN METEOROLOGY 1. Major Subject Studies (70-90 cr) ADVANCED STUDIES IN METEOROLOGY Compulsory studies (55 cr) Physical Meteorology, 5 cr Atmospheric General Circulation I, 5 cr Cloud Physics, 5 cr Master's Thesis in Meteorology, 40 cr Maturity Test, MSc Optional studies (15-35 cr) The advanced studies include a specialization to either dynamic meteorology and remote sensing or to micrometeorology and chemical meteorology. A-courses include the basic curriculum of the specialization line. B-courses are specialization studies and postgraduate courses of the specialization line. If agreed with the responsible professor and documented into the individual study plan (HOPS) one can take courses also from other specialization lines, other study program or from another university. 1. Maximum of 4 credits may be granted for participation in meteorological seminars. 2. Optional studies (21-48 cr) Optional studies can include for example a new, at minimum 25 cr minor subject studies module or an extension to the minor subject studies modules in the Bachelor s Degree. POSTGRADUATE DEGREE AND POSTGRADUATE STUDIES IN METEOROLOGY Postgraduate degrees are Licentiate in Philosophy and Doctor of Philosophy. Both degrees include 60 credits of the major and minor subject studies which are defined post-graduate studies in the personal study plan (J- HOPS). Postgraduate studies consist of studies of the research area (50 credits) and general postgraduate studies (10 credits) POSTGRADUATE STUDIES IN METEOROLOGY (60 CR) STUDIES IN THE FIELD OF RESEARCH (METEOROLOGY) (50 CR) Compulsory studies (3cr) Postgraduate Seminar, 3 cr Optional studies (47 cr) The major part of the research area postgraduate studies should be advanced studies related to one s own research area. Intermediate level studies from major subject studies can also be included to postgraduate studies if they are reasonably related to the research. In addition to the major subject studies the research area postgraduate studies can include intermediate or advanced studies from minor studies. The studies must form a more demanding module than the advanced studies in meteorology included the Master s Degree. All studies must form an entity that supports the major subject studies and research work. In addition to lectured courses studies can include also written exams based on literature. The exact content will be agreed when the postgraduate study plan is made GENERAL POSTGRADUATE STUDIES (10 CR) The general postgraduate studies are to include preparatory courses to philosophy of science, research ethics and general expertise as well as international scientific activity. The university, the Faculty of Science and its departments are responsible for the course selection. The exact content will be agreed when postgraduate study plan is made. METEOROLOGY STUDIES FOR MINOR SUBJECT STUDENTS BASIC STUDIES IN METEOROLOGY (MINOR SUBJECT STUDIES) (25 CR) Compulsory studies (17-20 cr) Introduction to Meteorology and Weather Observations, 5 cr Atmospheric Thermodynamics, 5 cr

5 One of the courses Introduction to Atmospheric Flow Dynamics, 10 cr Environmental Problems, Physics and Chemistry, 7 cr Optional studies (5-8 cr) Optional meteorology courses 5-8 credits thus it forms 25 credits module INTERMEDIATE STUDIES IN METEOROLOGY (MINOR SUBJECT STUDIES) (35 CR) Compulsory studies (20-30 cr) Introduction to Physical Climatology, 6 cr Meteorological Measurements, 3 cr Radar and Remote Sensing in Meteorology, 3 cr Introduction to Atmospheric Flow Dynamics (if not included to basic studies), 10cr Dynamics of Atmospheric Flow Structures, 8 cr Optional studies (5-15 cr) Optional meteorology courses 5-15 cr depending on whether Introduction to Atmospheric flow dynamics is included to basic studies or not ADVANCED STUDIES IN METEOROLOGY (MINOR SUBJECT STUDIES) (60 CR) Prerequisite for completing advanced studies are basic and intermediate studies for minor subject students or another module with corresponding knowledge. Compulsory studies (30 cr) Physical Meteorology, 5 cr Atmospheric General Circulation I, 5 cr Study, 20 cr Optional studies (30 cr) Optional courses from intermediate studies meteorology as well as dynamical and physical and/or chemical meteorology specialization lines, at least 30 cr. Completing the basic studies in meteorology requires more extensive knowledge on mathematics and physics than provided by high-school education (e.g. Mathematics for Physicists I and basic studies un physics). If you re uncertain of your basics, please consult the study counselor. The course Basics in meteorology and weather observation can however be taken without other special minor studies.
