3 Sunday Liturgy Pentecost Sunday Acts Corinthians 12.3b-7, or Galatians John , To the point: Jesus, the risen Lord, enters the room in which the disciples had barricaded themselves out of fear and offers them two gifts: his peace and the breath of the Holy Spirit. This scene and these words are familiar to us, having pondered them only a few weeks ago on the Second Sunday of Easter. Today, on the feast of Pentecost, we focus on the sharing of the Holy Spirit. Like Adam, brought from lifeless clay to a creature made in the image and likeness of God with a breath, the disciples are also transformed into a new creation. With this new indwelling of the Holy Spirit, they are sharers in the life of Christ who has conquered death and darkness, and they are to bear this life to the world through their preaching, healing, and forgiving. Connecting the Gospel ~ To the first & second readings: In the first reading from the Acts of the Apostles, we find a very different description of the arrival of the Holy Spirit. Instead of the gentleness of a breath, the Spirit comes to the disciples as a strong driving wind and tongues of fire. While breath is necessary for life, wind and fire lend themselves to movement and change. Within today s Scripture readings we are given a fuller picture of the Holy Spirit through the diverse ways it is portrayed. Just as God, the Father, and God, the Son, cannot be completely fathomed or contained by our human understanding, it is the same with the Holy Spirit. In the second reading St. Paul writes to the Corinthians to help them recognize the unity within the variety of gifts, services, and workings of the Holy Spirit that are being manifested in their community. To experience: Whether it is acting as wind, fire, or breath, the Holy Spirit continues to animate and inspire the Body of Christ alive in the world. Which one of these images speaks to your experience of the Holy Spirit moving in your life? How do you perceive the Spirit working now within your life and the life of your community of faith? As the Father has sent me, so I send you. And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, Receive the Holy Spirit. John , ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL: Thank you to all who are returning their pledges to the 2021 ACA. Your generous support helps the parish to move closer to our assigned goal. Pledge Forms are available in BOTH Churches and can returned in the Collection Basket or mailed directly to the Campaign Office. SCHOOL ST. CAMILLUS UPDATE: The School Construction Authority (SCA) is ready to begin interior renovations on the School Building. Work will be done from Monday to Saturday. The job will last days. The SCA is going to use a portion of the Church Parking Lot as a staging area to store materials during the renovation. (Please Note: The Parking Lot was NOT included in the Lease Agreement with the DOE. The parking Lot remains available as parking for Church.) The DOE Pre- K / Early Childhood Learning Center is scheduled to open in September, MARRIAGES IN 2022: Couples who want to be married in either St. Virgilius or St. Camillus Churches in 2022 are asked to please call Msgr. 4 ST. ROSE OF LIMA CATHOLIC ACADEMY: St. Rose is consciously and thoughtfully utilizing the best practices in the education world. The school s focus is on an updated curriculum with an integrated technology plan. The curriculum is aligned to the NYS Next Generation Learning Standards and monitored by the Diocesan Office of the Superintendent. The most important aspects of the curriculum update are the full integration of technology into the classroom, with a technology coordinator and training for teachers and staff to ensure systematic use of new technologies. For grades K-8: there is a 1:1 IPad program, which is integrated with the curriculum and used for real learning. They are used for note taking, project sharing and collaborating. There are charging carts in all the classrooms. For more information, please go to their Facebook page; their website: stroseoflimacatholicacedmy.org or call to arrange a tour and appointment to speak with the Principal, Mrs. Satti Marchan. Registration is now open for September, 2021 in all grades Pre-K to Grade 8. Financial assistance is available through the Catholic Foundation of Brooklyn & Queens. HELP WANTED: As we begin to make plans to resume normal parish activities (Hopefully by September), the parish will need more volunteers to serve as Lectors, Eucharistic Ministers, Ushers, Altar Servers. Please consider volunteering. Please speak with Msgr. Richard at F D ~ Gospel Reflection. ~ How would you complete this statement: "To me, peace means..." Describe times when you have ex erienced peace. When Jesus says "Peace be with you," what do you think he has in mind? Why is the power to forgive sins so impor ant in the Christian communit? What examples have you seen in your family or your parish of people sharing the peace of Christ? RELIGIOUS EDUCATION PROGRAM: Sister Maureen is already preparing to resume with IN -PERSON classes for ALL GRADES in September, Volunteers are needed to serve as catechists, classroom assistants and program aides. Please call Sister Maureen at if you would like to volunteer. Registration and Re-registration for September, 2021 will soon begin on our website ( ST. CAMILLUS MEMORIAL TREE: By the main entrance to St. Camillus School, there were two MEMORIAL TREES whose leaves were donated by former students and friends of St. Camillus School. Thanks to Joe Wiley, the leaves (Memorials) were saved and the tree has been replanted in the vestibule of St. Camillus Church. We have ordered a TREE OF LIFE for St. Camillus which will be placed on the wall within the Church by the door which leads to the Sacristy. The tree is on order and will be installed shortly. Leaves may be purchased for $200 each as memorials. Leaves are also available for the Tree of Life in St. Virgilius Church. Please call Mary Kay Flynn at the Rectory ( ) for more information. FOOD ST. CAMILLUS: Thank you to the Graybeards and RIBS who conducted a food drive this weekend to restock the pantries on the Peninsula. It is a tribute to the generosity of the community that during the past 15 months, the pantries have been open and stocked to assist individuals and families during this pandemic. May God bless you for your generosity. The St. Camillus is open on Wednesday mornings from 10 am to 11 am in the Cottage, Rockaway Beach Blvd. We do not accept donations of clothing or household items; perishable or prepared food.
5 BLOOD DRIVE IN MEMORY OF WALTER BLUM: Thank you to all who donated blood last Sunday. 92 pints of blood were donated. There has been a chronic deficit in blood donations throughout the pandemic but making the situation worse is the uptick in blood usage by our area hospitals above pre-pandemic levels as patients seek care that they put off during the pandemic. Blood donations each month are thousands below what hospitals need keeping us on the cusp of a blood emergency throughout this last year. To date, 100,000 blood donors have not returned to give blood and high schools and colleges have not resumed their blood drives making an already difficult situation even more challenging. Please help, call to make an appointment to donate. MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND: We welcome the members of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars to the 10 am Mass at St. Virgilius next Sunday (May 30 th ) GOLDEN AGE GROUPS: As activities begin to resume, our hope is that both Senior Groups (St. Virgilius and St. Camillus) will reopen in September. CATHOLIC SCHOOLS NIGHT AT MCU PARK: Tickets are on sale for the Tuesday, June 22 nd baseball game at MCU Park in Brooklyn. Sponsored by DeSales Media Group, the pregame ceremony will honor elementary school valedictorians and salutatorians, and bobble heads of the TABLET Editor Emeritus Ed Wilkinson will be handed out. Visit or call BKLYN for tickets. GIVE CENTRAL (ELECTRONIC GIVING) has been a benefit to the parish during this crisis. The weekly contributions are directly deposited in the PARISH Bank Account within 24 hours by GIVE CENTRAL. It has enabled people who view the Mass online to donate to the PARISH from all over the world. Former parishioners have been able to support the PARISH. GIVE CENTRAL has also enabled PARISHIONERS who do not feel comfortable with in-person (indoor) worship to continue to support the parish. Snowbirds, too can continue to support the PARISH while away. HOW TO SUPPORT Diocesan Collections or Special Parish collections, such as Maintenance and Repairs. You need to search the Portal to find these collections and make a one-time or recurring donation. 6 THE IMPORTANCE OF IN-PERSON SUNDAY MASS: (Bishops of CT. statement) Our Catholic faith teaches us the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is the sacramental celebration in which the Mystery of Christ's Passion, Death and Resurrection becomes present to us through grace. In other words, Christ's sacrifice on the cross at Calvary, which was offered once for all and atones for the sins of the whole world, is made present to us during the Mass. Personal participation at Mass invites us into the mystery of our salvation in Jesus Christ. Everything that takes place during the Mass offers us a personal encounter with the Crucified and Risen Christ. We hear Him speak to us in His Word, reminding us of the Gospel message and the mandate to proclaim it. We see Christ living among the community of the faithful, where He hears our prayers and encourages us in our daily lives. We experience the Lord in the person of the priest, who preaches the Word and offers the Eucharist in which our Lord becomes sacramentally present to us. Most especially, we encounter the Lord profoundly through the reception of Holy Communion since it is the crucified and Risen Christ himself we receive. These moments of our encounter with the Lord during Mass offer us a deeply personal opportunity for spiritual nourishment. By receiving Christ's Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity in the Eucharist, the Lord's grace strengthens the daily life we share with Him through our personal prayer and works of charity. Holy Communion is the celestial food that enlightens our minds, gives comfort to our hearts, and strengthens our wills to live the Church's mission in word, deeds and manner of life. Furthermore, when we gather as a community at Sunday Mass, we do so as members of Christ s Mystical Body. Just as the Lord gathered with His apostles in the Upper Room on the night before He died, in part to strengthen the bonds of love they shared in light of the challenges they would later face in their ministry, so too we gather as members of Christ's Mystical Body. In imitation of the Lord's example, we strengthen our bonds of unity and renew our shared mission to bring Christ's message of redemption, forgiveness, and hope to our troubled world. In a world that has relied upon technology to keep people united in times of profound isolation, some may question the need to attend Sunday Mass in person. To answer this question, we can never forget that while Christian discipleship involves a deeply personal relationship with the Lord, it is never a wholly private one. At our baptism, each of us received the Spirit of adoption, transforming us into Temples of the Holy Spirit and members of the one Mystical Body of Christ. The pursuit of holiness in our personal lives requires that we come together as a community of faith so that the Lord can bless, unite, and strengthen our shared hopes, dreams, challenges, and sufferings in service to Him. This communal transformation occurs uniquely during the celebration of Mass. "In the Eucharist the sacrifice of Christ becomes also the sacrifice of the members of his Body. The lives of the faithful, their praise, sufferings, prayer, and work are united with those of Christ and with his total offering, and so acquire a new value. However, the obligation to gather in person and attend Sunday Mass should never be understood simply as an observance of a legal requirement. Instead, it is the Church's expression of the deep, personal desire that burns in our hearts to come into the presence of the Lord whom we love, who gave His life for our salvation so that we may receive Him as food for our life's journey unto eternal glory. For who among us does not want to spend time with someone we deeply love? How much have our hearts ached this past year isolated and separated from our family and friends? In those moments, were our hearts not burning with a deep longing to see them again face to face? We did not need anyone to tell us we were obliged to seek them, for our love sought them. Similarly, it must be our deep love for Christ that invites us to seek Him in person and by attending Mass, to welcome Him intimately into our lives as food for the journey of life.
