7 Construction 2025: A vision for the future Building Information Modelling? Lower costs 33% Industry and Government have made a good start through their joint commitment to the Building Information Modelling (BIM) programme. However, the challenge is significant and opportunity vast. Lower Emissions 50% Government will mandate BIM for all centrally procured Government contracts from Industry must therefore meet the challenge only through the implementation of BIM will we be able to deliver more sustainable buildings, more quickly and more efficiently. Faster Delivery 50%

8 PAS : 2013 February 2013 Details both requirements and recommendations for the effective delivery of a BIM Level 2 compliant project. Fundamental principles Determines for Level an agreed 2 information set of standards and modelling methods to ensure true collaborative provision of a clear working definition of the employer s information requirements (EIR) and key decision points (to form part Ties of in the to contract new RIBA possibly stages and CIC Scope through adoption of of Works the CIC BIM Protocol) Focusses on asset creation but links to GSL. A separate standard (PAS1192:3 will cover operations/maintenance)

13 BIM Protocol Mandates the role of the Information Manager The key principles of the application of the CIC BIM Protocol are as follows: All parties that are responsible for the production of Building Information Models on behalf of the Employer should have the Protocol incorporated into their contract/appointment. The same version of the Protocol and Appendices should be incorporated into each contract. The wording of the CIC BIM Protocol should not be amended The Protocol should detail all Building Information Models that are going to be produced by all parties contracted to the employer on the project The Appendices have to be completed with project specific information for all projects. This should be available from preappointment documentation such as the Employer s Information Requirements. Changes to the Protocol and its Appendices should be treated as variations to the Contract The CIC BIM Protocol Appendices are the only documents which need to be completed with specific project details. Appendix 1 Model Production and Delivery Table. This must include references to all Building Information Models that are required by the employer at each project stage. Appendix 2 Information Requirements. This details the information management standards that will be adopted on a project.

15 Information Manager Principal responsibilities Managing processes and procedures for information exchange on projects Initiating and implementing the Project Information Plan and Asset Information Plan Assisting in the preparation of Project Outputs e.g. data drops Implementation of the BIM Protocol, including updating the Model Production and Delivery Table

16 Common Data Environment Management Establish a Common Data Environment including processes and procedures to enable reliable information exchange between Project Team Members, the Employer and other parties Establish, agree and implement the information structure and maintenance standards for the Information Model Receive information into the Information Model in compliance with agreed processes and procedures. Validate compliance with information requirements and advise on non-compliance Maintain the Information Model to meet integrity and security standards in compliance with the employer s information requirement Manage Common Data Environment processes and procedures, validate compliance with them and advise on non-compliance

17 Project Information Management Initiate, agree and implement the Project Information Plan and Asset Information Plan covering: a) information structure across roles e.g. software platforms (all levels of supply chain) appropriate to meet Employer requirements and Project Team resources b) responsibility for provision of information at each Stage c) level of detail of information required for specific Project Outputs e.g. Planning, Procurement, FM Procurement d) the process for incorporating as-constructed, testing, validation and commissioning information Enable integration of information within the Project Team and co-ordination of information by Design Lead Agree formats for Project Outputs Assist Project Team Members in assembling information for Project Outputs

18 Collaborative working, information exchange and project team management Support the implementation of the Project BIM Protocol including updating the Appendices Liaise with and co-operate with Project Team Members and the Employer to support collaborative working Assist the Project Team Members in establishing information exchange processes, including: a) define and agree procedures and responsibility for. recording information exchange process meetings Participate in and comply with project team management procedures and processes including: a) risk and value management b) performance management and measurement c) change management procedures including adjustments to budgets and programme d) attendance at project and design team meetings e) agree and implement record keeping, archiving and audit trail for Information Model

25 The emerging role of the BIM Coordinator Wider set of responsibilities than Information Manager More closely bound to design: Design lead BIM project set up: setting up goals for the project s BIM workflow and requirements management Model co-ordination: coordinate the process and check that the models work together the kind of models there are why they will be created how they will fit together maintains a collection of models from different sources makes sure that the information is interoperable and up to date Clash detection Quality check-ups Quantity takeoffs Data conversion

26 One blogger claims the BIM Coordinator is required to: Develop, implement and maintain the BIM Protocol Ensure all stakeholders are in alignment with the BIM Protocol. Create and maintain a BIM Coordination Programme that is aligned with the Project Programme. Identify any impact on the BIM Coordination Programme arising from errors in the transmission and use of information during the BIM process. Establish BIM Coordination workshops and report progress at the Project Design Team meetings. Keep a record of BIM models and their status. Keep a record of transfers of element ownership i.e. columns transferring from the Architect to the Structural Engineer. Establish quality control procedures to check that all of the models are accurate, the level of detail is fit for purpose. Identify and document clashes between different discipline models using clash detection software. Ensure that each organisation has published a version of the model for each significant milestone stage as identified in the BIM Coordination Programme. Record and monitor shared data and relationships between models e.g. grids, floor levels, shared project coordinates. Identify and agree any co-located or shared technical infrastructure needs, software package interoperability requirements and standards to be used by each team member to deliver BIM project. Administer the agreed document and model sharing/publication system - BIM Collaboration Procedures. Exclusive responsibility and power to issue binding instructions on BIM related issues. Co-ordinate hand over of model and data at the agreed milestones in the BIM Coordination Programme. In the event of the Project BIM Coordinator transferring to another person, provide all associated documents and fully brief incoming personnel on the protocols and history of the collaboration.
