1 Here is a list of resources that will assist teachers as they teach the American History I: The Founding Principles. This is not an exhaustive list, but represents entities that provide a variety of support materials. Resource Description On-line Link The BRI is a 501 (c) (3) not for profit charity that provides free educational resources for educators that support the teaching of America s Founding documents and principles for teachers and students. Teachers may also register to receive weekly lesson plans. Students may access the site to watch videos, play interactive games, and use information on the site to write a paper related to the founding principles. The BRI also have seminars and webinars for educators and school administrators. While these are all free resources, other curricular and supplementary materials are available for purchase. Bill of Rights Institute (BRI) The Founding Documents of the United States: Center for Civic Education The Center is a nonprofit, nonpartisan educational corporation that focuses its efforts on promoting an enlightened and responsible citizenry committed to democratic principles. To this end, it provides free professional development, programs and resources focused on the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights; American political traditions and institutions at the federal, state, and local levels; constitutionalism; civic participation; and the rights and responsibilities of citizens. 2 =content_types FREE Federal Resources for Educational Excellence Kids Voting Library of Congress This site features free teaching and learning resources from the Federal Agencies. The America's Founding Fathers resource features biographies of delegates at the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia in May Another notable resource is the Constitution of the U.S. which recounts how the Constitution was created and ratified. Kids Voting is a national network of community-based affiliates that partner with schools and election officials to provide students K-12 with a range of civic learning opportunities. Their high-quality instructional materials provide K-12 teachers with valuable civic learning tools to be used throughout the year. In addition to classroom activities about voting and elections, students also explore the right to vote and active citizenship. This collection includes resources on the founding fathers and early documents that contribute to the creation of the Page 2 of 5

3 American nation as well as the state of North Carolina. National Humanities Center (NHC) NC Bar Association (NCBA) Law-Related Education The NHC has a collection of primary resources (historical documents, literary texts, and works of art) that are thematically organized around a broad period of time with notes and discussion questions. These resources address the content enumerated in The Founding Principles Act. You may also find a series of lessons that include primary sources as well as background information and discussions strategies to assist teachers with integrating the resources into their classroom. The NHC also provides online and summer professional development seminars. The North Carolina Bar Association is a voluntary organization of lawyers, paralegals and law students dedicated to serving the public and the legal profession. The NC Bar fosters cooperation and interaction between teachers and lawyers to enhance the educational experience of North Carolina s school children by increasing their civic knowledge and participation. Among their many resources and initiatives are the following: We The People: The Citizen and the Constitution The primary goal of this instructional program is to promote civic competence and responsibility in elementary, middle and high school students. Students study materials relating to the Constitution, the Bill of Rights and the principles and development of constitutional democracy in the United States. High school classes may choose to culminate their study through participation in competitions styled as simulated congressional hearings. 4 It is a curricular program for middle, secondary, and postsecondary students, youth organizations, and adult groups that promote competent and responsible participation in local and state government. The program helps participants learn how to monitor and influence public policy. In the process, they develop support for democratic values and principles, tolerance, and feelings of political efficacy. The North Carolina Constitution Explained This publication, produced by the Law-Related Education Advisory Committee of the NCBA Foundation, will provide teachers and students with a better understanding of the NC Constitution in terms of the structure of government it creates and the relationship between the people and the government. It also provides both the original text of the Constitution as well as an explanation of the text. NC Civic Education Consortium Primary Source Documents Pertaining to Early American History This searchable database currently includes lessons, activities, guides, and model programs to help prepare young people for active, responsible citizenship. 5 We The People National Endowment for the Humanities We the People is an NEH program designed to encourage and enhance the teaching, study, and understanding of American history, culture, and democratic principles. There are significant resources addressing early documents and the founding fathers as well as documents such as the Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights.
